But they’re also conceited, full of themselves, and strut around campus like big swinging d*cks. Unfortunately, that doesn’t keep me from sleeping with one of them. Blame it on a post-breakup haze. It was only a one-time thing. Gifted him my panties as a keepsake. You're welcome, dude. Figured I’d never see him again. Then I’m hit with one of life's crappy twists: Mom and Dad go broke. Tuition's on me. I snag a gig tutoring athletes who think they’re above studying. And who's first in line? My one-night wonder and his two study-challenged pals. One’s obsessed with his “hard” physique. Another's all about his “scoring” technique. And the last? He's got “plays” that are full of surprises. Sure, I'll teach them about the bell curve. But they're about to show me a whole new playbook. I didn’t just make the grade. I made the team. Book excerpt: The plot revolves around three angry teenagers in a small, blue- collar town. Don Calhoun, the main character, is angry because he is a poor, pimply-faced teenage loner who yearns to be the most popular boy in school. Behind the pimply-faced exterior is a restless spirit seething with hate and revenge -- a deadly combination. Its the 60s and drugs and the free-love movement have taken hold in California. Through an acquaintance who has just returned from San Francisco, Don gets his hands on devil worship literature and a small wooden statue that was used in Satanic worship ceremonies. Don reads some of the literature, and concludes that selling his soul is the only way he can possibly realize his dream. But he really doesn't think it's possible. Across town lives another angry, miserable teen. His name is Eddie, and all he wants is to become the greatest rock-'n'-roll guitar player in the world. Eddie and Don are members of the zit squad at high school; at least that's what the jocks and cheerleaders call them. Laura once was a cheerleader and hung out with the other cheerleaders and jocks. But that was before she was paralyzed in a diving accident and ended up a "wheelchair-bound freak." Now her obsession is to walk again and regain her rightful place among the beautiful people. And like Don and Eddie, she becomes bitter and vengeful. Don is the first to take the plunge into the supernatural by conjuring up a demon that arranges for him to sell his soul to the big man himself. In just a matter of days, Don's new-found strength and powers enable him to destroy some of his tormentors. Only one person in town can sense the presence of evil and the death and destruction that will follow. But long ago she was labeled a religious nut, and nobody takes "poor ol' Anna" seriously. Don discovers that the ancient man who owns all the mills in town already is in league with the devil, having sold his soul a century earlier. Don is encouraged to recruit three more devil worshipers so the coven will be a complete thirteen members. Cruel events soon have Eddie and Laura eager to take the plunge after Don, and he easily convinces them that their souls are small prices to pay for the good life. To make their deal, Don, Eddie and Laura must sacrifice a human to Satan. Don chooses one of his teachers who delights in humiliating him in class, Eddie chooses a fellow student who ridiculed his music, and Laura chooses the girl who once was her best friend, but became her worst enemy after the accident. Each sacrifice is carried out in a bizarre, sadistic manner. The bodies soon begin to accumulate. Police launch an investigation but have few leads and very little incriminating evidence. Phillip Sawyer, a newspaper reporter fresh out of college, begins his own investigation hoping to find fame and fortune after breaking the case. And Anna keeps having visions of the murders and senses the growing evil. She tries to warn people and get someone to help her, but of course nobody believes her foolish story. In the end, Anna realizes she must battle Satan by herself, and sets out to prove she is the chosen one. Her tattered Bible guides her. In one test she handles a rattlesnake and drinks poison. She then raises a dog from the dead. But the ultimate test comes when she has to discard all her worldly possessions. The young reporter trails Don, Eddie and Laura to the old barn where they have set up an altar to worship Satan. Sawyer is caught spying on them and is asked what his last wish is before they cut his throat and feed him to the rats. To buy time, Sawyer tells them he wants to interview the devil. He is tied up and tossed into the cellar of the old barn. A few days later, Don arranges the interview at the mansion of the mill owner. During the interview, Sawyer makes a fatal error, he mentions Jesus Christ which infuriates Satan. Sawyer is retied and dumped back into the cellar. But this time

Book Globalization and Transnational Surrogacy in India

Download or read book Globalization and Transnational Surrogacy in India written by Sayantani DasGupta and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2014-02-14 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From computer support and hotel reservations to laboratory results and radiographic interpretations, it seems everything can be ‘outsourced’ in our globalized world. One would not think so with parenthood, however, especially motherhood, as it is a fundamental activity humans have historically preserved as personal and private. In our modern age, however, the advent and accessibility of assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) and the ease with which they have traversed global borders, has fundamentally altered the meaning of childbearing and parenting. In thetwenty-first century, parenthood is no longer achieved only through gestation, adoption, or traditional surrogacy, but also via assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs), where science and technology play lead roles. Furthermore, in a globalized world economy, where the movement and transfer of people and commodities are increasing to serve the interests of capitalism, gamete donation and surrogate birth can traverse innumerable geographic, socio-economic, racialized, and political borderlands. Thus, reproduction itself can be outsourced. This edited volume explores one specific aspect of the new assisted reproductive technologies: gestational surrogacy and how its practice is changing the traditional concept of parenthood across the globe. The phenomenon of transnational surrogacy has given rise to a thriving international industry where money is being ‘legally’ exchanged for babies and ‘reproductive labor’ has taken on a lucrative commercial tone. Yet, law, research, and activism are barely aware of this experience and are still playing catch-up with rapidly changing on-the-ground realities. This interdisciplinary collection of essays assuages the dearth of knowledge and addresses significant issues in transnational commercial gestational surrogacy as it takes shape in a peculiar relation between the West (primarily the United States) and India.

Book Military Trade

  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2019-07-18
  • ISBN : 1317712277
  • Pages : 318 pages

Download or read book Military Trade written by Steven Zeeland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-18 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A same-sex attraction for soldiers and sailors spans the globe and predates the term “homosexual” by several thousand years. But these days “military chasers” are likely to be seen as doubly incorrect. Most are gay men who pursue straight men. And, many of them do it in public. What continues to motivate so many men to brave arrest, violence, and the scorn of gay leaders who condemn any non-gay homosexual desire as “internalized homophobia”?In Military Trade (now updated to include an expanded photo insert!), Steven Zeeland, author of Sailors and Sexual Identity, The Masculine Marine, and Barrack Buddies and Soldier Lovers, brings together an edgy, enlightening, and richly entertaining collection of voices with a passion for servicemen, including: a TV talk-show host who pimped Marines to Hollywood stars a heavy metal superstar who dreams of being reincarnated as a Marine boot a women “trapped in a gay man’s body” who seduces Marines online then dominates them in person with strap-on dildos a former Force Recon Marine who complains of being chased by civilians but is now a Marine-chaser himself By turns steamy, hilarious, appalling, and deeply moving, Military Trade challenges assumptions about both chaser and chased and poses pointed questions about the wisdom of those who seek to divide the world into “straight” and “gay.” The interviews and essays collected in this book suggest that, paradoxically, for many men the advances of the gay rights movement have actually made it more difficult to form affectional bonds with other men. Gay sex has never been more openly advertised. But the military love of comrades is something that gay life can’t offer. Military Trade offers groundbreaking insight into: the difference between “military chasers” and uniform fetishists why gay men prefer sailors and Marines over soldiers and airmen the surprising range of sexual, “buddy,” and even love relationships “chasers” form with servicemen the nuances of “trade” and civil-military male prostitution what has been overlooked in the “sex panic” debate about men who have sex in public places For anyone interested in queer theory, the construction of masculinity, or sex between men outside of gay urban culture--and for anyone who has ever thrilled at the sight of a man in uniform--Military Trade is must reading.
