Book Czech Republic

Download or read book Czech Republic written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "At the end of 1995, the Czech Republic was regarded as the clearest success story in the region. It had one of the lowest rates of inflation and the lowest rates of unemployment. The high GDP growth rate looked sustainable, as it was accompanied by a moderate current account deficit, balanced fiscal account and seemed to be underpinned by important structural reform." The Czech Republic was perceived until 1996 as the most successful transition economy in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). The Czech Republic seems to be the clearest success story in the region. However, the Czech miracle came to a halt in May 1997. Its future economic development and successful integration into the European Union (EU) depends critically on its capacity to recover a sustainable output growth path. To assist the country in achieving its primary goal to join the European Union (EU) in the shortest period of time, this report analyzes economic developments in the Czech Republic since 1997. It focuses on assessing the status of the Czech Republic's economy from the perspective of its pursuit for EU membership. The report is composed of two volumes. The first volume is the summary report that condenses main findings and conclusions. The second volume is the main report. It provides the assessment and technical study of selected key sectors of the Czech economy. The EU accession process dominates the sector analyses, which are outlined in each chapter.

Book Dirty Deals 3 volumes

Download or read book Dirty Deals 3 volumes written by Amy Handlin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-09-16 with total page 1242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An encyclopedia unlike any other, this work focuses on lobbying, corruption, and political influence in America to inspire readers to think critically about the U.S. government and to appreciate the opportunities of citizenship. Even before the founding of the Republic, James Madison expressed the concern that special interest influence could become "adverse to the rights of other citizens [as well as] the permanent and aggregate interests of the community." In modern times, examples of lobbying scandals and corruption associated with political campaign contributions abound—and yet our political system can and does further the larger goals of American democracy. Suited for advanced high school students, undergraduates, and general readers, this set examines the three powerful forces that affect every level of government but typically operate out of public view. This three-volume work exhaustively covers the evolution and impact of lobbying, political influence, and corruption from the Colonial era to today. Volume 1 contains detailed scholarly essays on various aspects of lobbying, corruption, and political influence. Volume 2 comprises informative A–Z entries on people, events, laws, organizations, and legal decisions. The entries demonstrate the linkages among the topics but give equal attention to each as an independent influence on U.S. government and politics. Developments since 1990 and the extensive proliferation of the Internet and social media receive additional emphasis. Volume 3 contains primary documents that include executive orders, court cases, state and federal lobbying forms, and codes of conduct related to lobbying, campaign finance reform, and anti-corruption measures.

The narrative recalls the author's experience as a child of Holocaust survivors, living as a refugee in Rome, and finally realizing her dream of becoming a successful American citizen. Download or read book Czech Bluegrass written by Lee Bidgood and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bluegrass has found an unlikely home, and avid following, in the Czech Republic. The music’s emergence in Central Europe places it within an increasingly global network of communities built around bluegrass activities. Lee Bidgood offers a fascinating study of the Czech bluegrass phenomenon that merges intimate immersion in the music with on-the-ground fieldwork informed by his life as a working musician. Drawing on his own close personal and professional interactions, Bidgood charts how Czech bluegrass put down roots and looks at its performance as a uniquely Czech musical practice. He also reflects on “Americanist” musical projects and the ways Czech musicians use them to construct personal and social identities. Bidgood sees these acts of construction as a response to the Czech Republic’s postsocialist environment but also to US cultural prominence within our global mediascape.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An anthology spanning six decades of on-the-scene journalism from “one of the most eloquent witnesses of the twentieth century” (Bill Buford, Granta). For nearly sixty years, Martha Gellhorn traveled the globe to report on the tumult and extremity of life in the twentieth century. The View from the Ground, as Gellhorn explains, “is a selection of articles written during six decades; peace-time reporting. That is to say, the countries in the background were at peace at the moment of writing; not that there was peace on earth.” Included here are accounts of America during the Depression, Israel and Palestine in the 1950s, post-Franco Spain, protests at the White House, domestic life in Africa, and Gellhorn’s return to Cuba after a forty-one-year absence—among many other topics. Informed by the horrors of fascism in Spain and Germany, the modern terror in Central America, and by the courage of those who stand up to the thugs both in an out of government, The View from the Ground is a singular act of testimony that, like its companion volume, The Face of War, is “an eloquent, unforgettable history of a chaotic century” (San Francisco Chronicle).

Download or read book Havel written by Michael Zantovsky and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2014-11-04 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “definitive biography” of the poet and political dissident who became the last president of Czechoslovakia—and first president of the Czech Republic (Walter Isaacson). This portrait of Vaclav Havel, iconoclast and intellectual, renowned playwright turned political dissident, president of a united then divided nation, and dedicated human rights activist, is written by his former press secretary, advisor, and longtime friend—and recounts the turbulent twentieth-century era through which he prevailed. Havel’s lifelong perspective as an outsider began with his privileged childhood in Prague and his family’s blacklisted status following the Communist coup of 1948. This feeling of being outcast fueled his career as an essayist and a dramatist writing absurdist plays as social commentary. His involvement during the Prague Spring and his leadership of Charter 77, his unflagging belief in the power of the powerless, and his galvanizing personality catapulted Havel into a pivotal role as the leader of the Velvet Revolution in 1989. Although Havel was a courageous visionary, he was also a man of great contradictions, wracked with doubt and self-criticism. But he always remained true to himself. This “smart and exciting” biography is “both inspiring and filled with lessons for our time” (Walter Isaacson). “Havel was one of the most important intellectual-troublemaking statesmen of his time—a nonconformist, determined to live in truth, who questioned the system, his countrymen and himself constantly. No one is better suited than Michael Zantovsky to describe, interpret, and analyze this moral giant . . . A brilliantly informed intellectual and political history.” —Madeleine Albright “Entertaining, intimate, and moving . . . Zantovsky’s voice—that of a natural storyteller with an eye for the memorable anecdote, a mischievous wit, an easy intelligence, and keen sense of balance and fairness—is so engaging.” —Paul Wilson, The New York Review of Books

Book excerpt: ___________ 'This excellent book demands the attention of anyone concerned about civil liberties in the United Kingdom' Guardian 1969 was a year of rising tension, violence and change for the people of Northern Ireland. Rioting in Derry's Bogside led to the deployment of British troops and a shortlived, uneasy truce. The British army soon found itself engaged in an undercover war against the Provisional IRA, which was to last for more than twenty years. In this enthralling and controversial book, Martin Dillon, author of the bestselling The Shankill Butchers, examines the roles played by the Provisional IRA, the State forces, the Irish Government and the British Army during this troubled period. He unravels the mystery of war in which informers, agents and double agents operate, revealing disturbing facts about the way in which the terrorists and the Intelligence Agencies target, undermine and penetrate each other's ranks. The Dirty War is investigative reporting at its very best, containing startling disclosures and throwing new light on previously inexplicable events.

When Marty returns to Pennsylvania after living in California for ten years, he’s happily welcomed by his father and older brother, Jody. The joyful reunion is short-lived. Two days later, Jody enters the house to find his father and Marty shot dead as their masked killer flees out the back door. Without any answers from the local police, Jody heads to Los Angeles looking for who murdered his family and why. Soon, he finds a trove of strange videos recorded by his brother that leads him into the city’s most dangerous corners, where he comes up against drug dealers, crooked cops, surf gangs, and black-market profiteers. As his investigation expands, it also intersects with Pen, a documentary filmmaker who suspects humanity is living in a simulation and that her missing father found a portal to escape; Renata, an undocumented immigrant who might have evidence to support Pen’s theory; and Tiph, a young mother whose desperate efforts to support her only child via a stolen art stash could prove the key to answering all these mysteries. My Dirty California is a cinematic, suspenseful, intricately plotted thriller that explores the darker side of the glamorous Golden State.

Book The Hitler Kiss

Download or read book The Hitler Kiss written by Radomir Luza and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2004-10-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This gripping autobiography is at once a heart-pounding adventure story, a moving recollection of a larger-than-life father, and an important account of the Czech resistance. Radomir Luza's father was a revered army general when the Nazis stormed into Czechoslovakia. After his father went underground to avoid arrest and torture, the nineteen-year-old Radomir spent weeks in a Gestapo prison. Upon his release, he joined his father in hiding. General Luza became the military commander of the Czech resistance, while Radomir secretly helped organize the country's largest resistance network. Luza's narrative makes palpable the terror of being constantly hunted and nearly snared by betrayals and Gestapo raids. The Hitler Kiss is a portrait of courage, tenderness, optimism, and sheer survival.
