Book Curing the Dread of Death

Download or read book Curing the Dread of Death written by Rachel E. Menzies and published by Australian Academic Press. This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dread of death has appeared throughout recorded human history in art, literature, song, myth, and ritual. In both ancient and modern societies, the spectre of death has always been with us, stalking the terrified living who seek to avoid its inevitable arrival. Our attempts to respond to the finitude of life range from ancient burial customs such as mummification to computerised chatbots which imitate the personality of those who have departed. Such efforts speak to the uniqueness of humans in their awareness of their own mortality. Yet death is not to be feared. Indeed, it may hold the key to living a vital, authentic life. The many authors of this volume argue persuasively that we cannot live fully without complete acceptance of the fragility and finiteness of life. This unique book explores the dread of death and its management from a wide range of perspectives with researchers and writers from a variety of cultures, academic traditions and disciplines across the globe. The fields covered are broad — including palliative care and grief, psychodynamic theory, social, developmental and clinical psychology, sociology and anthropology, counselling practice as well as history, art, and philosophy. Not only is this book a fascinating journey into the very core of the human psyche, it is also a guide to our psychological health. The challenge we all face is to discover pathways to an acceptance of death that enables a life of significance and meaning. Read, learn, and explore what an examination of the dread of death can bring to one’s life.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Obsessive Compulsive and Related Disorders

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Obsessive Compulsive and Related Disorders written by and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-18 with total page 793 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5), much has changed about the conceptualization of obsessive-compulsive disorder and its associated spectrum conditions. Breaking free from the previous category of anxiety disorders, a new diagnostic category of "obsessive-compulsive and related disorders" (ORCDs) has emerged. This new categorization has provided an opportunity to enhance our understanding of these unique disorders and to address new research questions. The second edition of The Oxford Handbook of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders presents the latest information, from leaders in the field about the epidemiology, phenomenology, assessment, and treatment of ORCDs. The volume begins by reviewing the prevalence and profiles of obsessive-compulsive disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, hoarding disorder, trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder), and excoriation (skin-picking) disorder. Chapter authors then discuss modern conceptualizations of the OCRDs, including neurocircuitry, genetic, behavioral, and cognitive models. From here, assessment strategies are reviewed, followed by state-of-the-science biological and psychological treatments, including pharmacotherapy, neurosurgical strategies, behavioral therapies, and cognitive therapies. Finally, the volume examines the presentation and treatment of OCRDs across cultures as well as in special populations including children and older adults.

Book Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Research

Download or read book Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Research written by B. E. Ling and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), an anxiety disorder, suffer intensely from recurrent, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and/or repetitive behaviours (compulsions) that they feel they cannot control. Repetitive behaviours such as hand-washing, counting, checking, or cleaning are often performed with the hope of preventing obsessive thoughts or making them go away. Performing these so-called "rituals," however, provides only temporary relief, and not performing them markedly increases anxiety. Left untreated, obsessions and the need to carry out rituals can take over a person's life. OCD is often a chronic, relapsing illness. The first symptoms of OCD often begin during childhood or adolescence. OCD is equally common in males and females. OCD is sometimes accompanied by depression, eating disorders, substance abuse, or other anxiety disorders. Symptoms of OCD can also coexist and may even be part of a spectrum of other brain disorders, such as Tourette's syndrome. Appropriate diagnosis and treatment of other co-occurring disorders are important to successful treatment of OCD. This new volume offers new research from around the world.
