Book Kicking Up Dirt

Download or read book Kicking Up Dirt written by Ashley Fiolek and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2011-06-07 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At nineteen, Ashley Fiolek is already the top female competitor in a tough men's sport: motocross, one of the most dangerous extreme sports in the world. Since going pro in late 2007, Fiolek has taken gold at the X Games, twice won the American Women's Motocross Championship, and become the first woman in American motocross history to be signed to a factory team—the highest echelon of industry backing. These remarkable achievements seem even more extraordinary because Fiolek was born profoundly deaf, a handicap that makes everyday life difficult . . . and competition on the track downright treacherous. But Fiolek has never let her disability stand in the way of her dreams, nor has she allowed her gender to limit her career. One of the sport's most talked-about stars, she's changing the way the industry views women. Kicking Up Dirt is the remarkable true story of Ashley Fiolek's ride to greatness—the inspiring tale of a courageous young woman's determination to succeed in the face of truly challenging obstacles.

Book Ending the Tobacco Holocaust

Download or read book Ending the Tobacco Holocaust written by Michael Rabinoff and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day, at least 1,191 Americans die before their time. They die painful, lingering deaths that could have been prevented. Every three days, as many citizens die from their own smoking habit, or from exposure to second-hand smoke, as died in the Sept 11 tragedy. Each and every pack of cigarettes costs American taxpayers $40 in higher medical premiums, unavailability of health services, and other hidden financial drains. And every year, 925 out of every 1,000 smokers who try to quit on their own fail to stay smoke-free for a year-while hundreds of thousands of children become addicted to nicotine. Dr. Michael Rabinoff, a respected psychiatrist who holds two patents and has published repeatedly in the New England Journal of Medicine and other top-flight journals, shows the health and financial suicide we commit by allowing tobacco companies to continue doing business as usual-and, like any good doctor, provides a detailed prescription for what to do about it: simple actions you can take to save the lives of millions around the world.

From there, the ride just got wilder. On a lark, he and a friend created The Metal Mulisha -- now a top brand in FMX -- and he was on a fast track to the good life. But after a near-fatal accident, "Link "made a series of decisions that almost finished him off for good -- getting involved in prescription drugs, drug and gun running, underground fistfighting, and other behavior that compromised his health, his relationships, and his career. After hitting rock bottom and experiencing a moment of clarity, Link began to turn things around, salvaging and strengthening the things that mattered most. Now an icon to millions of extreme sports fans, Link is well on the road to a happy ending.

Book Boyington Oak

  • Author : Mary S. Palmer
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2019
  • ISBN : 9781627342827
  • Pages : 180 pages

Download or read book Boyington Oak written by Mary S. Palmer and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story is based on events that have since become folklore in Mobile, Alabama. It is about a nineteen-year-old printer, Charles R.S. Boyington, who was unjustly convicted and hanged for killing his best friend in 1835. During this period, the overwhelming majority of the people of Mobile considered all individuals as either God-fearing or evil, without exception. After learning of Boyington's atheistic beliefs, the court of public opinion swung toward him as the guilty party. Exacerbated with knowledge of his checkered past and his inconsistent testimonies, the people gave more weight to the flimsy circumstantial evidence against him. All this coalesced in working up the citizenry into such a state of frenzy that it served to strangle any impartially that they otherwise might have had. The heightened public outrage frightened off any potential witnesses for the defense and biased the jurors and judges to a point that the legal process turned into a sham, with a guilty verdict a foregone conclusion. Boyington's articulation skills and obvious intelligence meant little in the abatement of these preformed prejudices. Convicted by an unqualified jury in 1834 using only circumstantial evidence, he was shackled in Mobile's first jail in 1834 where he wrote poetry to his fiancee to survive. As he predicted would happen to prove his innocence, a tree grew on his gravesite and still stands 175 years later in the Church St. Graveyard.
