Download or read book Environmental Security in Watersheds The Sea of Azov written by Viktor Lagutov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-23 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Watersheds, supplying crucial ecosystem services to humans, seem to be a logical territorial unit to integrate societal benefits and environmental needs in order to evaluate the sustainability of natural resource use patterns. Based on this belief the book is an attempt to initiate a comprehensive environmental security assessment in the basin of the Azov Sea, shared by Russia and Ukraine. Though the region provides a variety of essential services and plays a strategic role in national and international development plans, it has been excluded from most regional environmental discussions. At the same time there is an alarming degradation rate of basin freshwater ecosystems that has occurred due to overutilization of certain prioritized services (e.g. transportation). The collapse of neglected services (e.g. fishery and freshwater supply) poses serious threats to the national economies as well as the local population, and to mitigate these threats priority in water management should be given to securing sustainability of the regional freshwater ecosystems. In addition to the review of the current status of Azov ecosystem services, the authors analyze likely future availability and challenges. The relevant experience derived from basin management of the Black Sea and other similar basins is also discussed.
Download or read book Submerged Landscapes of the European Continental Shelf written by Nicholas C. Flemming and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-04-26 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quaternary Paleoenvironments examines the drowned landscapes exposed as extensive and attractive territory for prehistoric human settlement during the Ice Ages of the Pleistocene, when sea levels dropped to 120m-135m below their current levels. This volume provides an overview of the geological, geomorphological, climatic and sea-level history of the European continental shelf as a whole, as well as a series of detailed regional reviews for each of the major sea basins. The nature and variable attractions of the landscapes and resources available for human exploitation are examined, as are the conditions under which archaeological sites and landscape features are likely to have been preserved, destroyed or buried by sediment during sea-level rise. The authors also discuss the extent to which we can predict where to look for drowned landscapes with the greatest chance of success, with frequent reference to examples of preserved prehistoric sites in different submerged environments. Quaternary Paleoenvironments will be of interest to archaeologists, geologists, marine scientists, palaeoanthropologists, cultural heritage managers, geographers, and all those with an interest in the drowned landscapes of the continental shelf.
Download or read book Management of Marine Protected Areas written by Paul D. Goriup and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-01-23 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the health of the world’s oceans threatened as never before, it is becoming increasingly apparent that Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) play a vitally important role in protecting marine and coastal habitats. Management of Marine Protected Areas: A Network Perspective draws on the results of a major EU-sponsored research project related to the establishment of networks of MPAs in the Mediterranean and Black Seas that transpired from February 2011 to January 2016. Featuring contributions by leading university- and national research institute-based scientists, chapters utilize the latest research data and developments in marine conservation policy to explore issues related to ways in which networks of MPAs may amplify the effectiveness and conservation benefits of individual areas within them. Topics addressed include the broader socio-economic impacts of MPAs in the Mediterranean and Black Seas; the use of Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) to resolve conflicts between marine resource use and protection; special protection measures under the EU’s Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD); ecological value assessments in the Black Sea; the Ecosystem Approach (EA) for managing marine ecosystems; MPAs along Turkey’s Black Sea coast; MPAs and offshore wind farms; and managing and monitoring MPA networks within and between the Black and Mediterranean Seas. Timely and important, Management of Marine Protected Areas: A Network Perspective offers invaluable insights into the role of MPAs in preserving the welfare and long-term viability of our world’s oceans.
Download or read book The Black Sea and the Early Civilizations of Europe the Near East and Asia written by Mariya Ivanova and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-08-26 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Black Sea lies at the junction of three major cultural areas: Europe, Central Asia and the Near East. It plays a crucial role in enduring discussions about the impact of complex Near Eastern societies on European societies, and the repercussions of early urbanization across Eurasia. This book presents the first comprehensive overview of the Black Sea region in the prehistoric period. It penetrates artificial boundaries imposed by traditions, politics and language to encompass both the European and Asiatic coasts and both Eastern European and Western scholarly literature. With a critical compilation and synthesis of archaeological data, this study situates the prehistoric Black Sea in a global historical context. By adopting the perspective of technology and innovation, it transcends a purely descriptive account of material culture and emphasizes society, human interaction, and engagement with the material world.

"The book consists of two main parts. In the first part are presented 45 of the most significant Bulgarian wetlands (lakes, swamps, reservoirs and other water bodies) along the Danube and Black Sea coasts and inside the country." "For each one of the wetlands there is a short characteristic description indicating the average and the maximum values for the wintering birds, the three most numerous species, the world threatened species and those exceeding the 1% Ramsar criteria." "In the second part of the book are presented 106 species of waterbirds with the dynamics of their numbers for the period 1977-2001 including graphics for most of the species." "The characteristic changes that have taken place in their wintering populations and the tendencies established by other authors for Europe are also indicated." "The book is a result of many years of effort by ornithologists - professional and non-professional, of major Bulgarian Scientific institutions, non-government organizations and state departments. It is illustrated with many black and white drawings by the famous Bulgarian artist Georgi Pchelarov. The book will be especially useful for those who are interested in birdwatching, wetland management and conservation."--Jacket.
