It explains how marginalized groups are developing their own pastoral associations to represent their interests, and Oxfame(tm)s role in facilitating that process. It describes an integrated approach to pastoral development: supporting the livelihoods of livestock keepers and those who have lost their animals; devising strategies to address drought and conflict as part of a longer-term agenda for sustainable development; and working to influence key decisions made by high-level policy-makers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Pastoral Care in the Classical Tradition, Andrew Purves argued that pastoral care and theology has long ignored Scripture and Christian doctrine, and pastoral practice has become secularized in both method and goal, the fiefdom of psychology and the social sciences. He builds further on this idea here, presenting a christological basis for ministry and pastoral theology.

Book Resource Management and Pastoral Institution Building in the West African Sahel

Download or read book Resource Management and Pastoral Institution Building in the West African Sahel written by Nadarajah Shanmugaratnam and published by Washington, D.C. : World Bank. This book was released on 1992 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This discussion paper presents the results of a study on pastoral institution building and resource management in the West Africa Sahel. The study was part of a program of research into the future directions of livestock production, agricultural development, and resource management in sub-Saharan Africa. The study describes the experiences and lessons that have emerged from the implementation of on-going projects assisted by the World Bank, designed to develop pastoral associations in Mali, Mauritania, Niger, and Senegal. The findings indicate that the formation and operation of pastoral associations must still be regarded as a pilot development activity, although valuable lessons and recommendations can be deduced, even at this early stage. The challenge is now to incorporate these lessons and recommendations in the design of future projects that aim to establish viable sustainable pastoral institutions and resource management activities.

Book Spiritual Direction and the Encounter with God

Download or read book Spiritual Direction and the Encounter with God written by William A. Barry and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is what we call "the encounter with God" merely a depth experience of the psyche or does it have a specific theological character? In this revised edition of his best selling book, William Barry shows how it it possible to understand an encounter with the Triune God in this world, and how that process can be interpreted and aided by a spiritual director. Using the insights of John Macmurray and John Smith, Barry describes how a relationship with God develops and how one can discern whether a particular experience is from God or not. This understanding of religious experience comes from a theology of community, communal discernment and ministry in the church. This book will be helpful to spiritual directors, educators and theologians, as well as all educated seekers desiring a deeper relationship with God. In this revised edition, the author has added reflections on God's presence to suffering and evil and to evildoers, updated the bibliography, and freshened his examples for the 21st-century reader. +

Book Pastoralism and Development in Africa

Download or read book Pastoralism and Development in Africa written by Andy Catley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once again, the Horn of Africa has been in the headlines. And once again the news has been bad: drought, famine, conflict, hunger, suffering and death. The finger of blame has been pointed in numerous directions: to the changing climate, to environmental degradation, to overpopulation, to geopolitics and conflict, to aid agency failures, and more. But it is not all disaster and catastrophe. Many successful development efforts at ‘the margins’ often remain hidden, informal, sometimes illegal; and rarely in line with standard development prescriptions. If we shift our gaze from the capital cities to the regional centres and their hinterlands, then a very different perspective emerges. These are the places where pastoralists live. They have for centuries struggled with drought, conflict and famine. They are resourceful, entrepreneurial and innovative peoples. Yet they have been ignored and marginalised by the states that control their territory and the development agencies who are supposed to help them. This book argues that, while we should not ignore the profound difficulties of creating secure livelihoods in the Greater Horn of Africa, there is much to be learned from development successes, large and small. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars with an interest in development studies and human geography, with a particular emphasis on Africa. It will also appeal to development policy-makers and practitioners.
