Book Aspects in Contexts

Download or read book Aspects in Contexts written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-07-26 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychology of religion has been enjoying considerable attention of late; the number of publications and people involved in the field is rapidly increasing. It is, however, one of the oldest branches within psychology in general, and one of the few in which an interdisciplinary approach has been kept alive and fostered. The fate of the field has been quite varied in the countries where psychology of religion has been initiated and developed during the 20th century. In this volume, some aspects of this international history are examined. Coming from six different Western countries, each of the contributors has a record in the historiography of psychology and profound knowledge of psychology of religion. Their approaches combine elements from the history of mentalities, the social history of science and biographical studies. The volume contains in-depth treatments of such topics as the growth of the field as reflected in university politics, developments within international organizations, and the personal involvement of contributors to the field. A wealth of information is provided on the background of the work of well known psychologists of religion like James Henry Leuba, Oskar Pfister, Gordon Allport, Werner Gruehn, Antoine Vergote and others.

Book The Direction of Desire

Download or read book The Direction of Desire written by Mark Gerard Murphy and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-27 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Lacanian psychoanalysis and Christian mystical theology demonstrating the former’s potential for reinvigorating spiritual direction. The author outlines how current methods of spiritual direction become saturated with self-help psycho-pop methodologies, and that desire has therefore been foreclosed in these practices. He suggests that the root of this is a focus on ‘positive affective experientialism’, which means spiritual direction must focus on emotional wholeness, healing and positivity. Finally, he argues that a new dialogue between John of the Cross (a mystic whose writings on spiritual direction formulate part of the core of the Catholic spiritual tradition) and Jacques Lacan can open the way for a spiritual direction beyond the confines of experientialism. The book concludes that we can only escape the experiential commodification of spiritual direction by critiquing the drive to experience in and of itself. This novel work will appeal in particular to students and scholars of psychoanalysis, religion, philosophy and critical theory.

Book Psychoanalysis and the family in twentieth century France

Download or read book Psychoanalysis and the family in twentieth century France written by Richard Bates and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-08 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last quarter of the twentieth century, if French people had a parenting problem or dilemma there was one person they consulted above all: Françoise Dolto (1908–88). But who was Dolto? How did she achieve a position of such influence? What ideas did she communicate to the French public? This book connects the story of Dolto’s rise to two broader histories: the dramatic growth of psychoanalysis in postwar France and the long-running debate over the family and the proper role of women in society. It shows that Dolto’s continued reputation in France as a liberal and enlightened educational thinker is at best only partially deserved and that conservative and anti-feminist ideas often underpinned her prominent public interventions. While Dolto retains the status of a national treasure, her career has had far-reaching and sometimes harmful repercussions for French society, particularly in the treatment of autism.

Download or read book Sean O Riordan a Theologian of Development written by Sean O'Riordan and published by Columba Press (IE). This book was released on 1998 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sean O'Riordan (1916-1998) was among the most gifted theologians of his generation. His particular theological style was the development of a scientifically based discourse with a pastoral purpose. It is this pastoral thrust that distinguishes him as a theologian: the desire to see how theology is at the service of all that is concrete, dynamic and historical in the life of the Church. This unique book gathers together, for the first time, some of Sean O'Riordan's more significant essays over a thirty-year period.

Book An Introduction to Christian Mysticism

Download or read book An Introduction to Christian Mysticism written by Thomas Merton and published by Cistercian Publications Books. This book was released on 2008 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these conferences dating to 1961, Thomas Merton provides for his audience of young monks an overview of major themes and figures in the Christian mystical tradition as an integral part of their religious inheritance and a crucial part of their spiritual formation. From Fathers of the Church such as St Athanasius and St Gregory of Nyssa, through such important medieval theologians as St Bonaventure, Hadewijch and Meister Eckhart, to the great Spanish Carmelites St Teresa of Avila and St John of the Cross, Merton traces such key topics as the integration of theology and spirituality; the importance of "natural contemplation"--recognizing the divine presence in creation; the centrality of apophatic or "dark" contemplation; and the role of spiritual direction in forming mature and balanced contemplatives.
