Book An Automated Electropneumatic Control System for Direct Simple Shear Testing

Download or read book An Automated Electropneumatic Control System for Direct Simple Shear Testing written by DJ. DeGroot and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes the design and implementation of an automated electropneumatic control system for direct simple shear testing of cohesive soils. The hardware and software used to perform automated application of consolidation increments and for subsequent constant volume shear of soil specimens is described in detail. Two servo-control algorithms are used to conduct a test, one for application of consolidation increments and another for maintaining constant volume during undrained shear. It is shown that a servocontrol system using a proportional controller can successfully control stress during consolidation increments but cannot control displacement by varying stress as required during undrained shear of cohesive soils. Results are presented which show that while the proportional controller can successfully perform displacement control for mechanical and hydraulic systems it cannot do so for more compliant pneumatic systems. This is primarily due to the fact that pneumatic systems are significantly less rigid due to the high compressibility of air as compared to the compressibility of mechanical systems and hydraulic fluids. While attempting to maintain constant height of the specimen, as is necessary to maintain constant volume during undrained shear, the pneumatic-based system falls into an irrecoverable oscillation of the vertical stress. It is shown that the undrained shear portion of a test required the implementation of the more sophisticated proportional plus integral plus derivative (PID) controller. Unlike the proportional controller, the PID controller easily maintains constant height of the specimen during undrained shear without instability in the vertical stress. Results are given comparing the performance of both the proportional controller and the PID controller during undrained shear of a cohesive soil specimen.

Book A Simple Shear Test for Saturated Cohesive Soils

Download or read book A Simple Shear Test for Saturated Cohesive Soils written by E. A. Sibley and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simple torsional vane shear device has been developed which provides a reliable and rapid measure of the shear strength of saturated cohesive soils. This device can be used both in the field and in the laboratory. It is lightweight, inexpensive, and easy to use. For an extensive foundation investigation with a large laboratory testing program, the torsional vane shear device will provide rapid results and will supplement the over-all program. For small investigations, this device can be used in evaluating site conditions and may reduce or, in some cases, eliminate laboratory testing. This paper describes the development and application of the device.

Book Correlations of Soil and Rock Properties in Geotechnical Engineering

Download or read book Correlations of Soil and Rock Properties in Geotechnical Engineering written by Jay Ameratunga and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a one-stop reference to the empirical correlations used extensively in geotechnical engineering. Empirical correlations play a key role in geotechnical engineering designs and analysis. Laboratory and in situ testing of soils can add significant cost to a civil engineering project. By using appropriate empirical correlations, it is possible to derive many design parameters, thus limiting our reliance on these soil tests. The authors have decades of experience in geotechnical engineering, as professional engineers or researchers. The objective of this book is to present a critical evaluation of a wide range of empirical correlations reported in the literature, along with typical values of soil parameters, in the light of their experience and knowledge. This book will be a one-stop-shop for the practising professionals, geotechnical researchers and academics looking for specific correlations for estimating certain geotechnical parameters. The empirical correlations in the forms of equations and charts and typical values are collated from extensive literature review, and from the authors' database.

Book Effect of Imperfect Direct Simple Shear Test Boundary Conditions on Monotonic and Cyclic Measurements

Download or read book Effect of Imperfect Direct Simple Shear Test Boundary Conditions on Monotonic and Cyclic Measurements written by Man Ho Daniel Wai and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The direct simple shear (DSS) test is commonly used to assess shear strength of soil, estimate liquefaction resistance, or calibrate constitutive models. However, constitutive models are calibrated assuming ideal simple shear stress conditions even though this is not achieved in the DSS test. Near frictionless vertical boundaries cannot develop the complementary shear stresses necessary for ideal simple shear conditions. Difficulties in maintaining constant height during undrained tests violates the constant volume assumption. The top cap holding the top of the specimen can rock (rotate) during shear also violating the assumed perfect simple shear conditions. Parametric studies were conducted to investigate the effect of contact friction between the soil and vertical boundaries, vertical compliance and top cap rocking on the results of undrained DSS tests. The study simulates an industry-standard SGI type simple shear device using a 3-D finite element model and an advanced plasticity model to capture soil behaviour.

This book was released on 2017-01-16 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this spirit, the ATMSS International Workshop “Advances in Laboratory Testing & Modelling of Soils and Shales” (Villars-sur-Ollon, Switzerland; 18-20 January 2017) has been organized to promote the exchange of ideas, experience and state of the art among major experts active in the field of experimental testing and modelling of soils and shales. The Workshop has been organized under the auspices of the Technical Committees TC-101 “Laboratory Testing”, TC-106 “Unsaturated Soils” and TC-308 “Energy Geotechnics” of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. This volume contains the invited keynote and feature lectures, as well as the papers that have been presented at the Workshop. The topics of the lectures and papers cover a wide range of theoretical and experimental research, including unsaturated behaviour of soils and shales, multiphysical testing of geomaterials, hydro–mechanical behaviour of shales and stiff clays, the geomechanical behaviour of the Opalinus Clay shale, advanced laboratory testing for site characterization and in–situ applications, and soil – structure interactions.
