Book excerpt: Abstract: A few microseconds after the Big Bang, the universe is believed to have existed in the form of a plasma composed of strongly interacting particles known as quarks and gluons. Although the quarks and gluons behave as asymptotically free particles in a Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP), free quarks and gluons have never been discovered in the laboratory. Experiments at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) aim to create conditions similar to the early universe by colliding heavy ions at the highest energies possible in the hope of observing a phase transition from a QGP into hadronic degrees of freedom. The response of the space time structure of the hot reaction zone created in a heavy ion collision to a phase transition is one of the many observables being studied at RHIC. Making use of the techniques of two particle intensity interferometry, also known as the HBT effect, the RHIC experiments are studying the space-time structure and dynamical properties of the region from which particles are emitted. A large spatial size and long duration of particle emission are the predicted signals for a phase transition from a QGP to a hadronic phase. In this thesis we present results on the first measurement of one dimensional K0[subscript s] K0[subscript s] interferometry by the STAR experiment at RHIC in central (small impact parameter) Au-Au collisions at center of mass energy of 200 GeV per nucleon pair. The lambda parameter, which is a measure of the sources chaoticity, is found to be consistent with unity confirming the fact that the source is mostly chaotic as measured by STAR using three particle correlations. Without taking into account the effect of the strong interaction, the invariant radius R inv is found to be large for the mean transverse mass M [subscript t] of the pair, which is about 980 MeV/c, compared to expectations from charged pion correlations at the same M [subscript t]. Including the effect of the strong interactions makes the radius parameter for the K0[subscript s] K0[subscript s] system fall within the charged pion M [subscript t] systematics. Our result serves as a valuable cross-check of charged pion measurements which are mainly affected by contributions from resonance decays and final state interactions. This is also an important first step towards a full three dimensional analysis of neutral kaon correlations as high statistics data from RHIC will be available in the near future.

Book Measurement of Direct Photons in 200 A GeV 32S Au Collisions

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two years ago at the 10th Winter Workshop on Nuclear Dynamics, we reported preliminary results from our measurements of photons in reactions of 200·A GeV 32S ions with Au nuclei. The results had been presented earlier at Quark Matter '93. For central collisions we reported a small, but statistically significant, excess of photons over those that can be accounted for by the two-photon decay branches of neutral pions and eta mesons and by the small photon contributions from other radiative decays. This paper is, in a sense, a sequel to the 1994 presentation. Here we present the final WA80 single 'direct' photon results, and we discuss their implications for various theoretical calculations. 13 refs., 2 figs., 1 tab.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Quantum Chromodynamics predicts a phase transition from a state formed by hadrons to a plasma of deconfined quarks and gluons, the Quark Gluon Plasma, as a the energy density exceeds a critical value. This deconfined phase is believed to be the one in which the early universe existed in a time-scale [approx.] 10−5 s after the Big Bang. Ultrarelativistic Heavy Ion Collisions, like the ones that take place at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory, reach energy densities above the critical value creating a deconfined phase of quarks and gluons that can be studied at the laboratory. This gives us the opportunity to study a phase of matter in the deconfined region of QCD, the properties of the strong interaction, the formation of hadronic matter and the interaction between hadrons. In the analysis presented in this thesis, the dynamical evolution of the particle emitting source and its space-time structure at freeze-out is studied using the two particle intensity interferometry technique. The expansion of the source is also studied. We find indications that this expansion may be caused by the initial pressure gradient generated in the initial stages of the collision through particle rescattering in a very dense medium.

Book Di hadron Correlations with Identified Leading Hadrons in 200 GeV Au Au and D Au Collisions at STAR

Download or read book Di hadron Correlations with Identified Leading Hadrons in 200 GeV Au Au and D Au Collisions at STAR written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The STAR Collaboration presents for the first time two-dimensional di-hadron correlations with identified leading hadrons in 200 GeV central Au + Au and minimum-bias d + Au collisions to explore hadronization mechanisms in the quark gluon plasma. The enhancement of the jet-like yield for leading pions in Au + Au data with respect to the d + Au reference and the absence of such an enhancement for leading non-pions (protons and kaons) are discussed within the context of a quark recombination scenario. The correlated yield at large angles, specifically in the ridge region, is found to be significantly higher for leading non-pions than pions. As a result, the consistencies of the constituent quark scaling, azimuthal harmonic model and a mini-jet modification model description of the data are tested, providing further constraints on hadronization.

Book Measurement of Heavy Flavor Yield and Azimuthal Anisotropy at Forward Angles in Cu Au Collisions at a Center of mass Collision Energy Per Nucleon of 200 GeV

This book was released on 2017 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heavy flavor quarks are produced early in heavy ion collisions and will experience the full evolution of the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP). Measurements at forward rapidity may be influenced as much, or more, by the cold nuclear matter effects as by the hot nuclear matter effects associated with a QGP. As the medium evolves, the initial spatial anisotropy of participants is converted to an azimuthal anisotropy in the momentum space of outgoing particles. Therefore, the momentum spectra modification and anisotropy parameters provide useful information about the heavy quark interaction with the bulk medium. Asymmetric heavy ion collisions, such as Cu+Au, provide a unique geometry with which to study the dynamics of the heavy quarks, relative to that in symmetric collisions. In particular, asymmetries in the yields between the Cu-going and Au-going directions may help unentangle the so-called cold nuclear matter effects from the hot nuclear matter effects indicative of a QGP. In addition, the parameters v2 and v3 in asymmetric collisions may be modified relative to the symmetric collisions due to the unique geometry provided in mid-central Cu+Au collisions. This dissertation presents the measurement of the yield and azimuthal anisotropy of single muons originating from heavy flavor decays in [square root of]SNN [center-of-mass energy per nucleon] = 200 GeV Cu+Au collisions.

Book Studies of Nucleon gold Collisions at 200 GeV Per Nucleon Pair Using Tagged D Au Interactions

This book was released on 2006 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) Further, hadron production in p+Au interactions is compared to that of n+Au interactions. The single charge difference between a p+Au and a n+Au collision allows for a unique study of the ability of the interaction to transport the proton from the initial deuteron to mid-rapidity. However, no asymmetry between the positively and negatively charged hadron spectra of p+Au and n+Au interactions is observed at (qr) = 0.8. Collision centrality was determined using several different observables, including those based on the multiplicity in different regions of pseudorapidity and those based on the amount of nuclear spectator material. It is shown that measurements made on small collision systems in the mid-rapidity region are biased by centrality variables based on the mid-rapidity multiplicity. Despite this bias, a smooth evolution with centrality is observed in the Cronin enhancement of hadrons produced in d+Au collisions. It is shown that this smooth progression is independent of the choice of centrality variable when centrality is parametrized by the multiplicity measured near mid-rapidity.
