Book Direct Broadcast Satellite Communications

Download or read book Direct Broadcast Satellite Communications written by Donald C. Mead and published by Pearson Education. This book was released on 1999-09-20 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its higher power and superior video and audio quality, Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) communications is proliferating worldwide. Many new DBS systems are evolving and with the introduction of HDTV, DBS technology is predicted to become even more prevalent. Written by a leading DBS authority, this book is required reading for anyone involved in this burgeoning field. This comprehensive reference describes the history and structure of DBS systems, the regulatory environment, the subsystems that support it, and the underlying compression technology that makes it commercially feasible. Direct Broadcast Satellite Communications can be read as a broad overview of DBS systems or can serve as a detailed technical description. In particular, the author thoroughly explains how MPEG compression standards are used to implement modern satellite broadcast systems. You will find complete information on key topics such as: International and FCC regulations Radio frequency components of DBS systems, including the shaped reflector antenna Forward error correction, looking at block codes, interleaving, and Viterbi decoding The use of cryptography for conditional access to subscription services MPEG system and transport layer MPEG-2 video and audio compression Connecting terrestrial systems and DBS uplinks The Integrated Receiver Decoder In addition, the book explores future developments, including the Spaceway and the Global Broadcast Service, as well as the MPEG-4 compression standards. Numerous case studies involving DIRECTV(TM) and the European DVB standard appear throughout the book. For other books in this series, see http://www.awl.com/cseng/wirelessseries/

Book The United States and the Direct Broadcast Satellite

Download or read book The United States and the Direct Broadcast Satellite written by Sara Fletcher Luther and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1988 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The possibilities of Direct Broadcast by Satellite (DBS) have provoked serious debate in modern telecommunications circles, raising vital questions of state sovereignty, cultural interaction, and the functioning of political and economic systems. In this ground-breaking study, Dr. Luther identifies the social, political, and economic factors underlying the evolving international controversy and situates the debate in the larger arena of postwar power relationships, including the rise of socialist and Third World countries. Placing these issues in a unique historical framework, she discusses the rise of international regulation through the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the role of radio interests in the United States, and the legitimizing effect of the then-emerging mass communications research and scholarship. Dr. Luther also devotes particular attention to the First Amendment and "free flow" arguments put forth by the United States in support of an unfettered international transmission of radio and television signals via satellite. A provocative, insightful work, The United States and the Direct Broadcast Satellite will do much to help clarify the ongoing DBS debate.

This book was released on 2018-08-17 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NASA is committed to providing technology development that leads to the introduction of new commercial applications for communications satellites. The Direct Broadcast Satellite-Radio (DBS-R) Program is a joint effort between The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and The United States Information Agency/Voice of America (USIA/VOA) directed at this objective. The purpose of this program is to define the service and develop the technology for a direct-to-listener satellite sound broadcasting system. The DBS-R Program, as structured by NASA and VOA, is now a three-phase program designed to help the U.S. commercial communications satellite and receiver industry bring about this new communications service. Major efforts are being directed towards frequency planning hardware and service development, service demonstration, and experimentation with new satellite and receiver technology. Book Direct Broadcast Satellite Telephone Traditional Cable

Download or read book Direct Broadcast Satellite Telephone Traditional Cable written by Christoph Koch and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2002-05-02 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 1999 in the subject Communications - Movies and Television, grade: 2+ (B+), Ohio University (School of Telecommunication), course: Cable Communications, language: English, abstract: It was only a very small report on the front page of last Thursday’s issue of USA Today, but it indicated a tremendous change not only for America’s telecommunications market, but also for its society as a whole. In a small box between headlines about the crisis in Kosovo the interested reader could find out that AT&T had announced to purchase cable giant MediaOne and that software producer Microsoft was about to invest $5 billion in AT&T shares. This huge move won’t let the video distribution market unchanged and many experts believe that this merger has triggered a lot of new developments in all kinds of fields. This paper deals with the competition between traditional wired cable (as we know it since the beginnings of television) on the one hand – and newer services like direct broadcast satellites (DBS) and video and data distribution via telephone lines. While the first part will mainly cover the latest developments in the telephony business (focusing on the breathtaking AT&T deal), the second part will compare the benefits of cable and DBS in detail. It lies in the nature of the subject that the playing field can change in a couple of weeks (if not even in a couple of hours). Therefor it is very important to rely on up-to-date information and literature. Especially literature from before the 1996 Telecommunications Act, which allowed cross-ownership between cable and telephony and the like, can’t be considered too useful and was used only to get a historic idea of the subject matter. In doing research in this field one also has to be especially careful not to rely on sources that are heavily influenced by either the cable or the DBS lobby. Both groups naturally try to present the facts in a light that makes them look better and emphasizes the advantages of their particular system over the ones of the competition.

Book Direct Broadcast Satellite Radio Market Legal Regulatory and Business Considerations

Download or read book Direct Broadcast Satellite Radio Market Legal Regulatory and Business Considerations written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Direct Broadcast Satellite-Radio (DBS-R) System offers the prospect of delivering high quality audio broadcasts to large audiences at costs lower than or comparable to those incurred using the current means of broadcasting. The maturation of mobile communications technologies, and advances in microelectronics and digital signal processing now make it possible to bring this technology to the marketplace. Heightened consumer interest in improved audio quality coupled with the technological and economic feasibility of meeting this demand via DBS-R make it opportune to start planning for implementation of DBS-R Systems. NASA-Lewis and the Voice of America as part of their on-going efforts to improve the quality of international audio broadcasts, have undertaken a number of tasks to more clearly define the technical, marketing, organizational, legal, and regulatory issues underlying implementation of DBS-R Systems. The results and an assessment is presented of the business considerations underlying the construction, launch, and operation of DBS-R Systems. Sood, Des R.
