Best known for his half-length and single-figure devotional pictures, Dolci was also a gifted painter of altarpieces and portraits. Written by a team of distinguished scholars, The Medici's Painter offers new archival discoveries and insights and features cross-disciplinary approaches to Dolci's life and art and the cultural and political contexts in which he worked. The volume sheds new light on Dolci's significant and impressive body of work. The painter understood the power of his paintings to inspire contemporaries, and his works continue to compel individuals to look closely and feel deeply about art.

Download or read book Hans Von Aachen 1552 1615 written by Hans von Aachen and published by Deutscher Kunstverlag. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After first studying in Cologne, Hans von Aachen moved to Italy in 1574 to further his studies. He toured Rome and Florence, eventually settling in Venice. Combining Flemish traditions and Italian innovation he developed a style of his own. Returning to Germany, he lived in Cologne and Munich as a painter of the nobility. In 1592 he was appointed official painter of Rudolph II, Holy Roman Emperor in Prague, finally moving to Prague in 1601, where he painted commissions from Emperor Rudolph II and his successor, Matthias I. The elegance, humour, and sensuality of his mythological and allegoric paintings continue to be a fascination. His religious presentations are symbolic of the constant change in a turbulent world. The Los Angeles Museum of Art (LACMA) numbers paintings from Hans von Aachen among its collection.

Download or read book Adam Elsheimer 1578 1610 written by Rüdiger Klessmann and published by Dulwich Picture Gallery. This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Adam Elsheimer is first recorded in 1600 and by 1610 he was dead. But Elsheimer was influential on the coming century to a degree out of all proportion to his brief career and small output. Above all, he revolutionised the handling of light in landscapes and interiors, introducing novel ways of handling complex narratives as well as inventing new subject matter in painting." "Although his importance has always been recognised, appreciation of the artist has been hampered by a lack of good reproductions. This book offers for the first time a host of lavish colour details from his paintings that demonstrate Elsheimer's extraordinarily fine touch and feeling. This major study, the first to appear in English for nearly thirty years, accompanies a landmark exhibition being held at the Stadelsches Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt, at the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh and at Dulwich Picture Gallery in London."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: This is the second volume devoted to Italian painting in the The Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection. Seventeenth and eighteenth century paintings, especially those of the Venetian School, form a major part of the collection, thanks to the many acquisitions of the past few years. This scholarly book offers a panoramic view of painting in Italy during these two centuries, including the works of 'minor' artists such as Ferrau Fenzoni and Francesco Foschi. The collection begins and ends with two of the greatest paintings of all time - Caravaggio's ""St Catherine,"" and ""The Death of Hyacinthus"" by Giambattista Tiepolo.
