Book Instruments of Knowledge

Download or read book Instruments of Knowledge written by Jean-François Gauvin and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-06-19 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a bid to claim ‘scientific objects’ as requiring a significant amount of conceptual labor, this book looks sequentially at instruments, habits, and museums. The goal is to uncover how, together, these material and immaterial activities, rules, and commitments form one meaningful and credible blueprint revealing the building blocks of knowledge production. They serve to conceptualize and examine the entire life of an instrument: from its ideation and craft to its use, reuse, circulation, recycling, and (if not obliterated) its final entry into a museum. It is such an epistemological triptych that guides this investigation.

Book The Origins of the Telescope

Download or read book The Origins of the Telescope written by Albert Van Helden and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origins of the telescope have been discussed and debated since shortly after the instrument's appearance in The Hague in 1608. Civic and national pride have led local dignitaries, popular writers, and numerous scholars to search the archives and to construct sharply divergent histories. Did the honor of the invention belong to the Dutch, to the Italians, to the English, or to the Spanish? And if the city of Middelburg in the Netherlands was, in fact, the cradle of the instrument, was the "true inventor" Hans Lipperhey or his rival Zacharias Jansen? Or was the instrument there before anyone knew it? Over the past several decades, a group of historians and scientists have sought out new documents, re-examined familiar ones, and tested early lenses and telescopes. This volume contains the proceedings of a symposium held in Middelburg in September 2008 to mark 400 years of the telescope. The essays in it, taken as a whole, present a new and convincing account of the origins of the instrument that changed mankind's vision of the universe.

Book excerpt: The development of ophthalmology to its present level of sophisticated practice is an extraordinary story of research, experiment, and achievement. Dates in Ophthalmology: A Chronological Record of Progress in Ophthalmology over the Last Millennium charts the progress of that achievement over the last millennium, highlighting and describing the key dates of advancement. It presents a concise listing of the chief personages, periods, publications, and events in the history of ophthalmology from ancient times to the present. The book demonstrates how ideas, discoveries, and technologies cross borders and oceans. It illustrates the interplay of subspecialties, the changing pre-eminence of countries and cities, and the explosions of creativity and generations of dormancy in various areas. The author highlights the numerous and diverse events and people responsible for shaping this specialty. There are many ways of looking at history: from the standpoint of the lives of major figures, of society and impact, of subspecialties, of countries, of institutions, and of books. By presenting its information chronologically, Dates in Ophthalmology explores the how these areas intersect, influence, and impact each other.

Book Photoreception and Vision in Invertebrates

Download or read book Photoreception and Vision in Invertebrates written by M. A. Ali and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 856 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I see a man's life is a tedious one. Cymbeline, Act III, Sc. 6. It is well known that the best way to learn a subject is to teach it! Along the same lines one might also say that a pleasant way of learning a subject and at the same time getting to know quite a few of the workers active in it, is to arrange and to attend an Advanced Study Institute (ASI) or a workshop lasting about two weeks. This was and is the wisdom behind the NA TO-ASI programme and much as people fear that a fortnight may be too long, before it is over everyone feels that it was too short, especially if the weather had cooperated. Organising this ASI which resulted in this volume has been a very good learning experience. I started my career in research with invertebrates and retained an interest in them over the years due to my teaching a course and working sporadically on various aspects of photoreception in Polychaetes, Crustaceans and Insects. Thus, the thought of organising an ASI on photoreception and vision in invertebrates had been brewing in my mind for the past half a dozen years or so. It was felt that it will be desirable to do a bit of stock taking and discuss possible new approaches to the study of this matter.

Book Descartes and the Hyperbolic Quest

Download or read book Descartes and the Hyperbolic Quest written by D. Graham Burnett and published by American Philosophical Society. This book was released on 2005 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1629, the natural philosopher René Descartes enticed a young artisan to undertake a secretive project, one that promised to revolutionize early modern astronomy. Descartes believed he had conceived a new kind of telescope lens, shaped by the light of reason itself, & surpassing anything ever to come from the hands of the glass-working craftsmen of the era. These novel lenses would never be touched by human hands -- they would be cut by an elaborate machine, a self-regulating & automatic device. This study traces the inception, development, & finally the collapse of this ambitious enterprise, which absorbed the energies & attentions of a broad range of 17th-century savants, including Huygens, Wren, Hevelius, Hooke, & even Newton.
