Book Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs

Download or read book Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs written by Lisa Randall and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this brilliant exploration of our cosmic environment, the renowned particle physicist and New York Times bestselling author of Warped Passages and Knocking on Heaven’s Door uses her research into dark matter to illuminate the startling connections between the furthest reaches of space and life here on Earth. Sixty-six million years ago, an object the size of a city descended from space to crash into Earth, creating a devastating cataclysm that killed off the dinosaurs, along with three-quarters of the other species on the planet. What was its origin? In Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs, Lisa Randall proposes it was a comet that was dislodged from its orbit as the Solar System passed through a disk of dark matter embedded in the Milky Way. In a sense, it might have been dark matter that killed the dinosaurs. Working through the background and consequences of this proposal, Randall shares with us the latest findings—established and speculative—regarding the nature and role of dark matter and the origin of the Universe, our galaxy, our Solar System, and life, along with the process by which scientists explore new concepts. In Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs, Randall tells a breathtaking story that weaves together the cosmos’ history and our own, illuminating the deep relationships that are critical to our world and the astonishing beauty inherent in the most familiar things.

Book The Dinosaur Filmography

Download or read book The Dinosaur Filmography written by Mark F. Berry and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From classics like King Kong, to beloved B-movies like The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, to blockbusters like Jurassic Park, it's easy to see that filmmakers and audiences alike love to see dinosaurs on the screen. This comprehensive filmography, arranged alphabetically by title, contains entries that include basic facts (year of release, country of origin, studio, and running time), followed by a concise plot summary, the author's critical commentary, information on the production and the people behind it, and secrets of the often-ingenious special effects. Three useful appendices feature films with minor dinosaur content, planned but unfinished dinosaur movies, and the quasi-dinosaurs of Toho Studios. To be included, a movie must depict one or more representations of a "prehistoric reptile." Inaccurate portrayals are included, as long as the intent is to represent a real or fictional dinosaur. Not eligible are films featuring prehistoric mammals, prehistoric humans or humanoids, and beasts of mythology--unless, of course, the movie also has a dinosaur.

Book excerpt: About the Book Will your life click away as a montage before your eyes when Death comes? Will it be a car wreck or cancer? Will Death appear to you as a skull-faced ghoul or avuncular guide? Rest assured, you will certainly meet him. Since humans became human, Death has harvested. Over the millennia, he has occasionally revealed himself to mortals. Nick, as a pre-teen, meets the specter after surviving a near miss. Throughout Nick’s life, Death appears on no set schedule, their conversations a mix of reveal and closely held answers to Nick’s questions: Is there a God? Is there any kind of life after death? How do you maintain such a nice tan? Nick’s search for answers continues throughout his life, at times an accepted reality, at others causing Nick debilitating pain and anger. As years tick away, Nick realizes the many cultural and spiritual differences in dealing with and accepting Death, leading him to a personal understanding that helps him cope. Nick’s story will bring hope to some, peace to many, and acceptance to most, as we all must ultimately face our own last goal. About the Author Michael O’Neal’s interest in death and dying has been there since childhood. As a teacher, he continued education in classes focused on suicide intervention, philosophy, cultural studies, and death and dying. An enlightening experience happened when he presented a salon class on death and dying at a women’s prison. A Native American woman confided in O’Neal that she’d had the Kubler-Ross experience of seeing the light. A master’s degree in multicultural education, international travel, and years of living overseas gave O’Neal adjusted perceptions of Death. Being run over as a kid, two close friends committing suicide, and assisting his brother with a dignified death, motivated O’Neal to write The Last Goal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fifth Dinosaur Lake Book: The predatory dinosaurs, amphibious, land-crawlers, air flyers, small and large, were dead; dead in all the forests, mountains, deserts, towns and cities of America and across the planet. They were still hunted, sought and exterminated when found, and these rogue beasts were becoming rarer every day. The humans’ dinosaur killing serum and extermination practices had worked far better than anyone had prayed and they had eventually freed the planet of its primordial scourge. The earth belonged to the humans once more and all its lands were safe–or so the world, Henry Shore, former Chief Park Ranger at Crater Lake National Park, and his wife, Ann, had believed…until one day years later two new dinosaurs, craftier than any the earth had ever seen, appeared. One of them was benevolent, a friend to mankind, and the other was not. It was blood-thirsty, eerily intelligent and unbelievably vengeful. This dinosaur wouldn’t be so easy to kill. *** Dinosaur Lake V: Survivors is the fifth book in the Dinosaur Lake series by Kathryn Meyer Griffith.

Christ said he is the beginning [Alpha] and the end [Omega] all of which has been explained in this little book. Are we headed for WW III? Why is there so much of an uproar in the Middle East? When God is good why is there so much bad in this world? Why did God create mankind? Was it for his pleasure as some claim? Yet there is so much suffering in the world, surly God does not get pleasure from this, does he? In Proverbs nine, verse ten Solomon tells us the beginning of wisdom is to fear the Lord. Download or read book Baby Dinosaurs on the Ark written by Janet Kellogg Ray and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2021-09-09 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A scientific look at creationism from a former creationist A significant number of Americans, especially evangelical Christians, believe Earth and humankind were created in their present form sometime in the last 10,000 years or so—the rationale being that this is (presumably) the story told in the book of Genesis. Within that group, any threatening scientific evidence that suggests otherwise is rejected or, when possible, retrofitted into a creationist worldview. But can this uncomfortable blend of biblical literalism and pseudoscience hold up under scrutiny? Is it tenable to believe that the Grand Canyon was formed not millions of years ago by gradual erosion but merely thousands of years ago by the Great Flood? Were there really baby dinosaurs with Noah on his ark? Janet Kellogg Ray, a science educator who grew up a creationist, doesn’t want other Christians to have to do the exhausting mental gymnastics she did earlier in her life. Working through the findings of a range of fields including geology, paleontology, and biology, she shows how a literal interpretation of the book of Genesis simply doesn’t mesh with what we know to be reality. But as someone who remains a committed Christian, Ray also shows how an acceptance of the theory of evolution is not necessarily an acceptance of atheism, and how God can still be responsible for having created the world, even if it wasn’t in a single, momentary, miraculous event.
