Book My Mother s Kitchen

Download or read book My Mother s Kitchen written by Peter Gethers and published by Henry Holt. This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Mother's Kitchen is a funny, moving memoir about a son’s discovery that his mother has a genius for understanding the intimate connections between cooking, people and love Peter Gethers wants to give his aging mother a very personal and perhaps final gift: a spectacular feast featuring all her favorite dishes. The problem is, although he was raised to love food and wine he doesn’t really know how to cook. So he embarks upon an often hilarious and always touching culinary journey that will ultimately allow him to bring his mother’s friends and loved ones to the table one last time. The daughter of a restaurateur—the restaurant was New York’s legendary Ratner’s—Judy Gethers discovered a passion for cooking in her 50s. In time, she became a mentor and friend to several of the most famous chefs in America, including Wolfgang Puck, Nancy Silverton and Jonathan Waxman; she also wrote many cookbooks and taught cooking alongside Julia Child. In her 80s, she was robbed of her ability to cook by a debilitating stroke. But illness has brought her closer than ever to her son: Peter regularly visits her so they can share meals, and he can ask questions about her colorful past, while learning her kitchen secrets. Gradually his ambition becomes manifest: he decides to learn how to cook his mother the meal of her dreams and thereby tell the story of her life to all those who have loved her. With his trademark wit and knowing eye, Peter Gethers has written an unforgettable memoir about how food and family can do much more than feed us—they can nourish our souls.

He has always strived to be the “best of the best,” but lately nothing has gone his way. Gabe was devastated six months earlier when his half-brother Josh had a drunk driving accident that killed four members of a family and left a sixteen-year-old girl named Sophie an orphan. Josh went to prison and Gabe struggles to forgive him because how can he forgive the unforgivable? When Gabe reluctantly agrees to do math tutoring for his senior service project, he discovers that the girl he will be tutoring is also named Sophie. But in a town of eighty thousand people, what are the odds it will be the same person? Astronomical, Gabe figures. Gabe soon discovers, though, that it is the same Sophie. A former National Merit Scholar finalist, Sophie had a severe brain injury in the accident. She has seizures, amnesia, and can barely read or write. When he meets her, Gabe realizes what his purpose in life must be—to help Sophie and make amends for his brother. His plan is to spend the rest of the school year tutoring Sophie, then say goodbye and go quietly off to college without ever telling her that his brother was the one who killed her family. What Gabe doesn’t count on is falling in love.

Download or read book Sunday Dinners written by Diane Cowen and published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-10 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirteen of America’s favorite pastors and their families share their Sunday traditions, mealtime blessings, inspiring stories, and favorite recipes. Foreword by Victoria Osteen Research shows that eating dinner together strengthens a family’s bond, and Sunday dinners are especially sacred. They are a time to bring everyone together, catch up, teach children manners and social skills, stay connected with teens, learn about family history and values, and nourish our bodies and souls. In Sunday Dinners, the pastor families who share their experiences are known not just for their successes in the pulpit and in their communities but also for the strong families they have built. They preach it, and they live it, and that’s inspiring. This is a cookbook to be read and savored, to remind us that no matter how busy we think we are, we can still take time to come together, break bread, and connect with family and good friends. “Sunday Dinners adds a fillip of celebrity: It highlights thirteen megachurch preachers (and their spouses who often do the cooking) including Bishop T.D. and Serita Jakes who duel for the most decadent banana pudding.” —The Washington Post “Collectively, the families in Sunday Dinners are ambassadors for great food, strong families and deep faith.” —The State

Book A Busy Mom s Guide to Entertaining

Download or read book A Busy Mom s Guide to Entertaining written by Lisa A. Stukel and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008-10 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small scale laboratory simulations, in a plasma tunnel, were used to guide the formulation of a new dark energy theory. The simulations were used to demonstrate how and why dark energy produces the acceleration of main sequence stars. This led to the application of Newton's Law to quantify this star acceleration. This simulation forms the basis for a detailed explanation of how spiral galaxies, and other galaxies and star groups, were formed by dark energy. Finally, we are logically lead to dark energy processes that would result in the formation of Voids, Walls, and Clusters. Correlations, between theoretical predictions and astronomical observations, show that the predictions are consistent with the observations. Six additional chapters have been added in this second edition. Two chapters include additional small scale laboratory simulations, that are related to supersonic and hypersonic dark energy. Two chapters give a detailed description of how dark energy acted as the catalyst that led to the formation of spiral galaxies, as well as other types of galaxies and star groups. The remaining two chapters outline how dark energy acted as the catalyst that resulted in the creation of Voids, Walls, and Clusters.
