Download or read book Pilgrim Pursuit of Happiness written by Leo Martin and published by Legends Library Press. This book was released on 2020-06-11 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Declaration of Independence states that one of our unalienable rights is the pursuit of happiness. It is clear from the records of both Virginia and Massachusetts at the time that this phrase meant the right to privately own property. However, what is also clear is that the unalienable right we have is to pursue happiness and not obtain happiness. Today Americans often mistake the meaning of this phrase and think that their government owes them happiness in all flavors, to be claimed by them at any time. What Leo Martin has done is to clearly articulate the meaning of this phrase by going to the root of our country, the Pilgrims. No other people at the time of our nation's initial development portray, as families and a migrating Church, the meaning of pursuing happiness under the Hand of a Sovereign God better than this tiny band! Though never in a majority and never wealthy; they considered themselves to be rich in spiritual treasure. Though they sought no shrine to honor themselves, a nation has honored them as the root of its liberty though in our day they have been largely forgotten. It is time we returned to what truly made America great. It is time we remembered the nature of the liberties brought by the Pilgrims in their simple faith, heart-felt devotion and iron-clad character. Though the seeds planted by them eventually grew into a tree much larger and with leaves a bit different in color than they may have anticipated, their love of family, their stand for freedom, and their faith in God stand tall and point in the direction toward which our nation can recover from her amnesia. Let this little book be read and re-read to your children and grandchildren, that the stories of our past may come alive again.-Dr. Paul JehleExecutive Director -Plymouth Rock Foundation

Download or read book Technology of the Oppressed written by David Nemer and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How Brazilian favela residents engage with and appropriate technologies, both to fight the oppression in their lives and to represent themselves in the world. Brazilian favelas are impoverished settlements usually located on hillsides or the outskirts of a city. In Technology of the Oppressed, David Nemer draws on extensive ethnographic fieldwork to provide a rich account of how favela residents engage with technology in community technology centers and in their everyday lives. Their stories reveal the structural violence of the information age. But they also show how those oppressed by technology don’t just reject it, but consciously resist and appropriate it, and how their experiences with digital technologies enable them to navigate both digital and nondigital sources of oppression—and even, at times, to flourish. Nemer uses a decolonial and intersectional framework called Mundane Technology as an analytical tool to understand how digital technologies can simultaneously be sites of oppression and tools in the fight for freedom. Building on the work of the Brazilian educator and philosopher Paulo Freire, he shows how the favela residents appropriate everyday technologies—technological artifacts (cell phones, Facebook), operations (repair), and spaces (Telecenters and Lan Houses)—and use them to alleviate the oppression in their everyday lives. He also addresses the relationship of misinformation to radicalization and the rise of the new far right. Contrary to the simplistic techno-optimistic belief that technology will save the poor, even with access to technology these marginalized people face numerous sources of oppression, including technological biases, racism, classism, sexism, and censorship. Yet the spirit, love, community, resilience, and resistance of favela residents make possible their pursuit of freedom.
Download or read book The Pursuit written by and published by StoryMirror Infotech Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2024-09-17 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A budding civil service aspirant, a devout capitalist, a practicing socialist and a second generation entrepreneur join forces to raise the decibels of an engineering life. Offering a melody for that orchestra was a nightingale with a high-pitched note. Far away in a secluded jungle was a tribal voice actively striving with a lot of poise. In the concrete jungle though was a political heir finding her flair. Divergent life choices crossed paths for love, friendship, ambition and journeyed through self-discovery as a political drama unfolds with India's spectrum allocations and the spiralling growth of social media. If Doordarshan’s promise of distant vision had suffered an irrevocable myopia serving the government's agenda, the mainstream media’s stubbornness to proxy corporate houses’ interests had taken public interest journalism for a ride. And when seemingly innocuous Nadia tapes blew up the coats and cloaks, all traditional media went overboard to black out the story. Amidst the cacophony that followed, technology offered a level-playing field for unheard voices, unkempt hairs, drooped shoulders and fragile limbs. Social media needled the traditional media houses and became the new custodians of public conscience. Timeless wonder wrapped in a cotton ball, Is this a strange connect standing tall. With a promise to write better than he can, Weaving magic with black, white and tan.

The chapters explore how technological innovations have transformed journalism and how an international comparative perspective can contribute to our understanding of the topic. Journalism is examined within Anglo-American and European contexts as well as in Asia and Africa, and comparative approaches and methods for journalism studies in the digital age are evaluated. Written by both leading scholars and media practitioners in the field, the articles in this collection are based on theoretical frameworks and empirical data, drawn from content analysis of newspaper and online coverage, in-depth interviews with news practitioners, observation on the websites of news organisations and analysis of journalists on Twitter. The result is a cohesive compilation that offers the reader an up-to-date and comprehensive understanding of digital developments in journalism and comparative journalism studies.
