Book excerpt: This book serves as an introduction to cryocooler technology and describes the principle applications of cryocoolers across a broad range of fields. It covers the specific requirements of these applications, and describes how the advantages and disadvantages of different cryocooler systems are taken into consideration. For example, Stirling coolers tend to be used only in space applications because of their high coefficient of performance, low weight and proven reliability, whilst Gifford-McMahon coolers are used for ground applications, such as in cryopumps and MRI shield cooling applications. Joule-Thomson cryocoolers are used in missile technology because of the fast cool down requirements. The cryocooler field is fast developing and the number of applications are growing because of the increasing costs of the cryogens such as Helium and Neon. The first chapter of the book introduces the different types of cryocoolers, their classification, working principles, and their design aspects, and briefly mentions some of the applications of these systems. This introductory chapter is followed by a number of contributions from prominent international researchers, each describing a specific field of application, the cooling requirements and the cryocooler systems employed. These areas of application include gas liquefaction, space technology, medical science, dilution refrigerators, missile systems, and physics research including particle accelerators. Each chapter describes the cooling requirements based on the end use, the approximate cooling load calculations, the criteria for cryocooler selection, the arrangement for cryocooler placement, the connection of the cooler to the object to be cooled, and includes genuine case studies. Intended primarily for researchers working on cryocoolers, the book will also serve as an introduction to cryocooler technology for students, and a useful reference for those using cryocooler systems in any area of application.

Book Digital Frequency Domain Multiplexer for Mm Wavelength Telescopes

Download or read book Digital Frequency Domain Multiplexer for Mm Wavelength Telescopes written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An FPGA based digital signal processing (DSP) system for biasing and reading out multiplexed bolometric detectors for mm-wavelength telescopes is presented. This readout system is being deployed for balloon-borne and ground based cosmology experiments with the primary goal of measuring the signature of inflation with the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation. The system consists of analog superconducting electronics running at 250 mK and 4 K, coupled to digital room temperature backend electronics described here. The digital electronics perform the real time functionality with DSP algorithms implemented in firmware. A soft embedded processor provides all of the slow housekeeping control and communications. Each board in the system synthesizes multi-frequency combs of 8 to 32 carriers in the MHz band to bias the detectors. After the carriers have been modulated with the sky-signal by the detectors, the same boards digitize the comb directly. The carriers are mixed down to base-band and low pass filtered. The signal bandwidth of 0.050Hz-100 Hz places extreme requirements on stability and requires powerful filtering techniques to recover the sky-signal from the MHz carriers.

Download or read book The Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing OFDM Introduction and explanation of five different types of techniques written by Dr. Lokesh Chikkananjaiah and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-02-25 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2019 in the subject Electrotechnology, grade: 9, , language: English, abstract: The Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is an important aspect of multicarrier digital data transmission system where a single data stream is transmitted into a several number of lower rates subcarrier signals. In this thesis, there are five different types of the techniques introduced to strengthen the communication quality and capacity. This kind of new standard of transmission of data is the first one to perform with OFDM in data packet based communication system. In wireless communication network, the abstraction of parallel transmission of data symbols is implemented to attain high throughput and effective transmission quality. The OFDM is a method to deal with parallel transmission.

Book Detector Readout Electronics for EBEX

Download or read book Detector Readout Electronics for EBEX written by François Aubin and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "EBEX (the E and B Experiment) is a balloon-borne telescope with 8' resolution primarily designed to detect the B-mode polarization of the cosmic microwave background radiation, which would represent strong evidence for the inflationary period of the universe. EBEX will also characterize the galactic dust and the gravitational lensing. During a 11 day long duration science flight over Antarctica scheduled for the Austral Summer of 2012-2013, EBEX will operate 872, 436 and 256 spider-web transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers at 150, 250 and 410 GHz, respectively, and observe a 350 square degree patch of sky. The EBEX engineering flight in June 2009 over New Mexico and Arizona provided the first usage of both a large array of TES bolometers and a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) based multiplexed readout system in a space-like environment. The sensors were read out with a new SQUID-based digital frequency domain multiplexed (DfMUX) readout system that was designed to meet the low noise, low power consumption and robust autonomous operation requirements presented by a balloon experiment. The DfMUX readout system successfully tuned, monitored and operated the EBEX camera at float. This successful demonstration increases the technology readiness level of these bolometers and the associated readout system for future space missions. In preparation for the science flight, the bolometer specifications to optimize the sensitivity of the EBEX camera have been calculated and verified to provide EBEX with the required sensitivity to meet its science goals. A series of bolometer wafers were produced at University of California, Berkeley, and characterized at McGill University and University of Minnesota. From these wafers, 14 have been selected for integration for the EBEX long duration balloon flight. The multiplexing factor of the DfMUX readout system has also been demonstrated to be improved from 8 to 16. An algorithm allowing for the monitoring of the camera setup and the camera performance at float has been developed. The camera operator will use this algorithm to the camera during flight in order to optimize both the observing time of the telescope and the sensitivity of the camera. EBEX is ready to perform its long-duration science flight." --
