Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chromosomes, as the genetic vehicles, provide the basic material for a large proportion of genetic investigations, from the construction of gene maps and models of chromosome organization, to the inves tigation of gene function and dysfunction. The study of chromosomes has developed in parallel with other aspects of molecular genetics, beginning with the first preparations of chromosomes from animal cells, through the development of banding techniques, which permitted the unequivocal identification of each chromosome in a karyotype, to the present analytical methods of molecular cytogenetics. Although some of these techniques have been in use for many years, and can be learned relatively easily, most published scientific reports—as a result of pressure on space from editors, and the response to that pressure by authors—contain little in the way of technical detail, and thus are rarely adequate for a researcher hoping to find all the necessary information to embark on a method from scratch. A new user needs not only a detailed description of the methods, but also some help with problem solving and sorting out the difficulties en countered in handling any biological system. This was the require ment to which the series Methods in Molecular Biology is addressed, and Chromosome Analysis Protocols forms a part of this series.

This book was released on 1995-11-16 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, designed primarily as a practical reference, attempts to provide a clear and pragmatic approach to the understanding of the innovative procedure in abdominal wall lifting with subcutaneous wiring. This sophisticated laparoscopic operation eliminates the conventional complications of the pneumoperitoneum method. The techniques described here do not require the use of air-tight trocars, thus allowing surgeons to operate smoothly as well as safely with better operative view and easier hemostasis, ligation, suturing, etc. This method has the additional advantage of greatly reducing the equipment and expensive disposable instruments used. This book is well illustrated with over 100 high quality and beautiful photographs.

Book Technical Advances in Biomedical Physics

Download or read book Technical Advances in Biomedical Physics written by P.P. Dendy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Advanced Study Institute was arranged to discuss in depth the physical and technical basis of the latest developments in methods of measurement and image analysis suitable for determining the prop erties of cells and tissues and for evaluating medical structures. All topics under consideration have benefitted dramatically from an injection of new ideas during the past 10 years, and some have developed even more recently. The Institute brought together lecturers and participants from 14 different countries, and the subject matter recorded in this volume may be considered under two general headings. The first part of the meeting concentrated on techniques that are most appropriate at the cellular level. One major area of develop ment has been centered on attempts to classify cells by computerized ex traction of visual features, and here, it was notable how different techniques frequently complement each other. This part of the meeting also examined mechanisms of damage at the cellular level caused by different forms of radiation, and the contrasting effects of ionizing radiation, ultraviolet light and ultrasound were highlighted.
