Download or read book AKAN ASHANTI FOLKTALES Revised and Annotated written by and published by Prince Sarfo-Adu. This book was released on 2024-07-17 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of 75 Ashanti tales recorded in the Ashanti and Kwawu areas of Ghana. Each folktale in Twi/Akan dialect of the Tshi language, is followed by an English translation. The English translation is, throughout, made as nearly literal as possible.(At this point, one meets a certain difficulty in a conflict between a desire for accuracy and an endeavour to give a translation acceptable to English ears). First published in 1930 by R.S. Rattray, this edition features a modern Akan/Twi orthography with a brief introduction to the Language. Ashanti folktales often tell a moral lesson, describe a myth, or answer a question about the natural world. Most of the Ashanti tales use animal characters to represent human qualities such as jealousy, honesty, greed, and bravery. Ananse, the spider, is a trickster figure who appears in many of the Ashanti tales. With regard to the classification of these stories, it will be observed that the majority of them fall under one or other of the well-known headings: drolls and cumulative tales; apologues or tales with a moral; aetiological stories, accounting for physical characteristics in men and beasts, e.g. How the Leopard became Spotted; etymological tales, e.g. How the Ram came to be called Odwanini. Each and all of the stories in this volume would, however, be classed by the Akan-speaking African under the generic title of “Anansesɛm” (Spider stories), whether the spider appeared in the tale or not.

Download or read book West African Folktales written by Richard Spears and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 1991-10-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These 123 tales reflect the rich oral tradition of West African folklore. Playful and sly, they teem with talking animals and shape-shifting tricksters, with pacts and promises made and broken, and with impossible deeds done through chicanery and magic. These tales deal with themes common throughout West Africa and the world. Indeed, American readers will recognize such characters as Brer Rabbit and the "tar baby," which had their roots in the folklore of this region. Because there is no overlay of Western values, however, some of the morals may surprise the unsuspecting reader—murder and polygamy, cannibalism and cunning, witchcraft and revenge spin matter-of-factly throughout the stories.

Download or read book Can We Talk and Other Stories written by Chinodya, Shimmer and published by Weaver Press. This book was released on 2018-04-12 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shimmer Chinodya, winner of the 1989 Commonwealth Writers Prize (Africa region) is one of Zimbabwe's foremost fiction writers. This collection of short stories reveals his development as a writer of passionate questioning integrity. The first stories, 'Hoffman Street' and 'The Man who Hanged Himself' capture the bewildered innocence of a child's view of the adult world, where behaviour is often puzzling and contradictory; stories such as 'Going to See Mr B.V.' provide the transition between the world of the adult and that of the child where the latter is required to act for himself in a situation where illusions founder on a narrow reality. 'Among the Dead' and 'Brothers and Sisters' look wryly at the self-conscious, self-centred, desperately serious world of young adulthood while 'Playing your Cards', 'The Waterfall', 'Strays' and 'Bramson' introduce characters for whom ambition, disillusion, and disappointment jostle for attention in a world where differences of class, culture, race and morality come to the fore. Finally, in 'Can we Talk' we conclude with an abrasive, lucid, sinewy voice which explores the nature of estrangement. The charge is desolation. Can we Talk and Other Stories speaks of the unspoken and unsaid. The child who watches but does not understand, the young man who observes but cannot participate, the man who stands outside not sure where his desires and ambitions lead, the older man, estranged by his own choices. 'Can we Talk' is not a question but a statement that insists on being heard, and demands a reassessment of our dreams.

BLOOD OF PIONEERS Hannah Wallace craves excitement, but all local adventures dried up long ago, when her parents unpacked their wagon on the Michigan frontier. Then war breaks out and her father and older brother leave to fight the Confederacy. Hannah is left at home chafing under the boredom of never-ending chores, jealous of her brother's lucky opportunity, and haunted by old memories--until unscrupulous speculators set their sights on the unmanned farm. The one place she longs to leave suddenly becomes the one place she'll risk everything to save. BENEATH THE SLASHINGS (Slashings--n. Broken branches, splintered trunks, and other debris left on the ground after lumbering: The slashings lay strewn about like casualties of war, cold, gray and skeletal.) Grace Nickerson's life has been shattered by four years of war. She's desperate to return to a sense of normalcy, but soon after her father returns, he sells the farm and drags the family to a lumber camp in Michigan's northern wilderness. Living in the primitive camp is dangerous enough, with its rough loggers and hard-bitten soldiers, but then a series of accidents prove intentional. Who is sabotaging the camp, and why? Will the winter in the woods bring the healing Grace's family needs? Or will it drive a wedge between Grace and her father? Likened to the rich literary style of Ann Rinaldi but with its own twist of adventure, the Divided Decade Collection wraps American history in an exciting, kid-pleasing package. Find out why so many teachers have incorporated this Civil War historical fiction series into classrooms across the country. Save significantly over individual titles; purchase the boxed set today and open a door to America's past for your child.
