Book Diffraction in Anisotropic Crystals

Download or read book Diffraction in Anisotropic Crystals written by Muhammmed Samir Al-Kharusi and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A theoretical and experimental study on acoustic, optical and acoustooptic diffraction in anisotropic crystals is presented. It is shown that even though optical activity in quartz introduces only very small changes in the optical wave vector loci, its effects on acoustooptic diffraction geometry are nevertheless easily measurable. A calculation procedure for the diffraction angles incorporating optical activity is described and then experimentally verified. Topez, an optically biaxial crystal, is used to demonstrate the effects on shear-wave acoustooptic diffraction geometry of acoustic propagation along other thon symmetry axes and of interaction in nonsymmetry planes. The diffraction field of a plane aperture or a plane transducer in a highly anisotropic crystal is calculated by means of an angular spectrum of plane waves representation for which the phase velocity surface need only be defined numerically. This theory is experimentally verified by observing optical diffraction from a slit-type aperture in a biaxial crystal and by acoustooptic probe measurements of quasi-longitudinal and quasi-shear ultrasonic beam profiles under conditions of very high elastic anisotropy. Further verification is achieved by using published experimental measurements of ultrasonic surface wave beam profiles on lithium niobate. It is demonstrated that excellent agreement between theory and experiment is possible. Finally, the formalism and associated computational techniques are extended in order to examine various relevant problems in the diffraction and focusing of elastic surface waves."--

Book On Diffraction and Focusing in Anisotropic Crystals

Download or read book On Diffraction and Focusing in Anisotropic Crystals written by Muhammed S. Kharusi and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper discusses various aspects of diffraction and focusing for waves in anisotropic crystals, and the concepts are applicable to electromagnetic, ultrasonic bulk, or ultrasonic surface waves in homogeneous but arbitrarily anisotropic crystals. A numerical technique based on an angular spectrum of plane waves representation is shown to produce theoretical intensity profiles in good agreement with acoustooptic probe measurements of the diffraction field of a slit-type ultrasonic transducer launching quasi-longitudinal and quasi-shear waves in quartz along on axis of extreme anisotropy where the wave normal and the direction of energy flow are separated by angles greater than 20 degrees. Book Acousto optic Diffraction Angles in Anisotropic Crystals

Download or read book Acousto optic Diffraction Angles in Anisotropic Crystals written by Muhammed Samir Kharusi and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Acoustooptic diffraction angles are expected to differ greatly from Bragg geometry when one uses optically anisotropic crystals and a rotation of the light polarisation takes place, since then the magnitudes of the two light wave vectors can be appreciably unequal. The only orientation that has been explicitly worked out prior to this thesis is that in which all the wave vectors are confined to the xy plane of uniaxial crystals. For this orientation, the two refractive indices involved are not direction dependent. In this thesis, the geometries for an interaction plane involving the optic axis in uniaxial crystals are calculated algebraically, first for an acoustic wave vector parallel and then perpendicular to the optic axis. In both cases one of the refractive indices is direction dependent. A computer program has also been written for numerically calculating the diffraction angles for all orientations and all directions of acoustic propagation in both uniaxial and biaxial crystals. A feature introduced in this program is that the crystal faces and their orientation with respect to other vectors is taken into account. Results obtained from the general, computer program agree with the results of all the three special cases and several geometries for biaxial crystals are presented."--

Book Diffraction Analysis of the Microstructure of Materials

Download or read book Diffraction Analysis of the Microstructure of Materials written by Eric J. Mittemeijer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overview of diffraction methods applied to the analysis of the microstructure of materials. Since crystallite size and the presence of lattice defects have a decisive influence on the properties of many engineering materials, information about this microstructure is of vital importance in developing and assessing materials for practical applications. The most powerful and usually non-destructive evaluation techniques available are X-ray and neutron diffraction. The book details, among other things, diffraction-line broadening methods for determining crystallite size and atomic-scale strain due, e.g. to dislocations, and methods for the analysis of residual (macroscale) stress. The book assumes only a basic knowledge of solid-state physics and supplies readers sufficient information to apply the methods themselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of diffraction methods for the solid-state sciences has been pivotal to determining the (micro)structure of a material. Particularly, the expanding activities in materials science have led to the development of new methods for analysis by diffraction. This book offers an authoritative overview of the new developments in the field of analysis of matter by (in particular X-ray, electron and neutron) diffraction. It is composed of chapters written by leading experts on 'modern diffraction methods'. The focus in the various chapters of this book is on the current forefront of research on and applications for diffraction methods. This unique book provides descriptions of the 'state of the art' and, at the same time, identifies avenues for future research. The book assumes only a basic knowledge of solid-state physics and allows the application of the described methods by the readers of the book (either graduate students or mature scientists).

Book Diffraction Physics

Download or read book Diffraction Physics written by J.M. Cowley and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-12-05 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this highly successful book appeared in 1975 and evolved from lecture notes for classes in physical optics, diffraction physics and electron microscopy given to advanced undergraduate and graduate students. The book deals with electron diffraction and diffraction from disordered or imperfect crystals and employed an approach using the Fourier transform from the beginning instead of as an extension of a Fourier series treatment. This third revised edition is a considerably rewritten and updated version which now includes all important developments which have taken place in recent years.

Book Indexing of Crystal Diffraction Patterns

Download or read book Indexing of Crystal Diffraction Patterns written by Adam Morawiec and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-28 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed, self-contained description of automatic indexing of crystal diffraction patterns, considering both ab initio indexing and indexing of patterns originating from known structures. Introductory chapters equip the reader with the necessary basic knowledge of geometric crystallography, as well as kinematic and dynamic theories of crystal diffraction. Subsequent chapters delve and describe ab initio indexing of single crystal diffraction patterns and indexing of patterns for orientation determination. The book also reviews methods of indexing powder diffraction and electron spot-type patterns, as well the subject of multigrain indexing. Later chapters are devoted to diffraction by helical structures and quasicrystals, as well as some aspects of lattice parameter refinement and strain determination. The book is intended equally for materials scientists curious about ‘nuts and bolts’ of diffraction pattern indexing and orientation mapping systems, as well as interdisciplinary researchers from physics, chemistry, and biology involved in crystallographic computing. It provides a rigorous, yet accessible, treatment of the subject matter for graduate students interested in understanding the functioning of diffraction pattern indexing engines.

Book Diffraction From Rough Surfaces And Dynamic Growth Fronts

Download or read book Diffraction From Rough Surfaces And Dynamic Growth Fronts written by T M Lu and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1993-10-12 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed both for experimentalists who study rough surfaces and the dynamics of thin film growth using diffraction techniques and for theorists who wish to learn of such rough surfaces and dynamic behavior in Fourier space, this monograph quickly brings the readers to forefront research in the area of the dynamics of interface growth. Graduate and advanced undergraduate students as well as those readers who have very little prior knowledge of diffraction can pick up the subject matter with little difficulty. This monograph gives a brief review and summary at the end of each chapter. After the introduction of the elementary theory of diffraction in Chapter I, Chapter II discusses the various parameters and correlation functions that are essential in describing a rough surface. In Chapter III, the authors not only show analytical forms of the diffraction structure factor for both rough crystalline and non-crystalline surfaces, but also outline the methods of extracting the interface width, the lateral correlation length and the roughness parameter from the diffraction structure factor. To present the basic physical concepts underlying the scaling hypothesis during dynamic growth, in Chapter IV, a detailed description of the dynamic scaling properties of the height-height correlation function, the height difference function and the structure factor is given. The structure factor from a dynamic growth front is derived in Chapter V. An example of a quantitative measurement of the dynamic growth front of an epitaxial system is also given in this chapter. In Chapter VI, a particular type of rough surfaces having a diverging interface width associated with an equilibrium surface roughening transition is discussed. A comparison of the diffraction characteristics from divergent and non-divergent interface is also summarized.
