This book was released on 1993-08-31 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the courses and lectures given during the workshop on Differential Geometry and Topology held at Alghero, Italy, in June 1992.The main goal of this meeting was to offer an introduction in attractive areas of current research and to discuss some recent important achievements in both the fields. This is reflected in the present book which contains some introductory texts together with more specialized contributions. The topics covered in this volume include circle and sphere packings, 3-manifolds invariants and combinatorial presentations of manifolds, soliton theory and its applications in differential geometry, G-manifolds of low cohomogeneity, exotic differentiable structures on R4, conformal deformation of Riemannian manifolds and Riemannian geometry of algebraic manifolds.
Download or read book Differential Topology and Geometry with Applications to Physics written by Eduardo Nahmad-Achar and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Differential geometry has encountered numerous applications in physics. More and more physical concepts can be understood as a direct consequence of geometric principles. The mathematical structure of Maxwell's electrodynamics, of the general theory of relativity, of string theory, and of gauge theories, to name but a few, are of a geometric nature. All of these disciplines require a curved space for the description of a system, and we require a mathematical formalism that can handle the dynamics in such spaces if we wish to go beyond a simple and superficial discussion of physical relationships. This formalism is precisely differential geometry. Even areas like thermodynamics and fluid mechanics greatly benefit from a differential geometric treatment. Not only in physics, but in important branches of mathematics has differential geometry effected important changes. Aimed at graduate students and requiring only linear algebra and differential and integral calculus, this book presents, in a concise and direct manner, the appropriate mathematical formalism and fundamentals of differential topology and differential geometry together with essential applications in many branches of physics." -- Prové de l'editor.
Download or read book Geometry And Topology Of Submanifolds Iii Proceedings Of The Leeds Differential Geometry Workshop 1990 written by Alan West and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1991-04-22 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This workshop collected together works by experts working in various aspects of the differential geometry of submanifold and discussed recent advances and unsolved problems. Two important linking lectures were on the work done by Thorbergsson and others on classifying isoparametric submanifolds of Euclidean spaces and the generalisation of these to Hilbert spaces due to Terng and others. Isoparametric submanifolds provides examples of minimal, taut submanifolds, of harmonic maps and submanifolds with parallel second fundamental form-all topics discussed at this workshop. There were also lectures on the rapidly developing topic of the affine geometry of hypersurfaces and on applications. Amomg the applications discussed are new methods for using PDE's for generating surfaces with special shapes for use in engineering design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the conference Geometry & Topology Down Under, held July 11-22, 2011, at the University of Melbourne, Parkville, Australia, in honour of Hyam Rubinstein. The main topic of the book is low-dimensional geometry and topology. It includes both survey articles based on courses presented at the conferences and research articles devoted to important questions in low-dimensional geometry. Together, these contributions show how methods from different fields of mathematics contribute to the study of 3-manifolds and Gromov hyperbolic groups. It also contains a list of favorite problems by Hyam Rubinstein.

Book excerpt: The 2019 'Australian-German Workshop on Differential Geometry in the Large' represented an extraordinary cross section of topics across differential geometry, geometric analysis and differential topology. The two-week programme featured talks from prominent keynote speakers from across the globe, treating geometric evolution equations, structures on manifolds, non-negative curvature and Alexandrov geometry, and topics in differential topology. A joy to the expert and novice alike, this proceedings volume touches on topics as diverse as Ricci and mean curvature flow, geometric invariant theory, Alexandrov spaces, almost formality, prescribed Ricci curvature, and Kähler and Sasaki geometry.

This book was released on 2007-01-16 with total page 917 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Singularity theory appears in numerous branches of mathematics, as well as in many emerging areas such as robotics, control theory, imaging, and various evolving areas in physics. The purpose of this proceedings volume is to cover recent developments in singularity theory and to introduce young researchers from developing countries to singularities in geometry and topology. The contributions discuss singularities in both complex and real geometry. As such, they provide a natural continuation of the previous school on singularities held at ICTP (1991), which is recognized as having had a major influence in the field.

Download or read book Differential Geometry and Integrable Systems written by Martin A. Guest and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ideas and techniques from the theory of integrable systems are playing an increasingly important role in geometry. Thanks to the development of tools from Lie theory, algebraic geometry, symplectic geometry, and topology, classical problems are investigated more systematically. New problems are also arising in mathematical physics. A major international conference was held at the University of Tokyo in July 2000. It brought together scientists in all of the areas influenced byintegrable systems. This book is the first of three collections of expository and research articles. This volume focuses on differential geometry. It is remarkable that many classical objects in surface theory and submanifold theory are described as integrable systems. Having such a description generallyreveals previously unnoticed symmetries and can lead to surprisingly explicit solutions. Surfaces of constant curvature in Euclidean space, harmonic maps from surfaces to symmetric spaces, and analogous structures on higher-dimensional manifolds are some of the examples that have broadened the horizons of differential geometry, bringing a rich supply of concrete examples into the theory of integrable systems. Many of the articles in this volume are written by prominent researchers and willserve as introductions to the topics. It is intended for graduate students and researchers interested in integrable systems and their relations to differential geometry, topology, algebraic geometry, and physics. The second volume from this conference also available from the AMS is Integrable Systems,Topology, and Physics, Volume 309 CONM/309in the Contemporary Mathematics series. The forthcoming third volume will be published by the Mathematical Society of Japan and will be available outside of Japan from the AMS in the Advanced Studies in Pure Mathematics series.

The abstract and modern topics of tensor algebra, Riemannian spaces and tensor analysis are studied in the last two chapters. A great number of illustrating examples, visualizations and genuine figures created by the authors’ own software are included to support the understanding of the presented concepts and results, and to develop an adequate perception of the shapes of geometric objects, their properties and the relations between them. Features Extensive, full colour visualisations. Numerous exercises. Self-contained and comprehensive treatment of the topic.
