Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last time Joël Paquet was in New York City, he nearly died. Too distracted by his problems, he didn't look when he crossed the street and was nearly made into a pancake by a transport truck in the downtown core. The only saving grace of this trip, other than the cute person working as a living statue who saved him and then took him out for coffee, was the fact that his near-death experience finally gave him the courage to come out as trans. Five years later, Joël Paquet is one of the most in-demand horror writers in North America. Going to New York City from his current Montreal home for the Black Markets Horror Con should be exciting, but when he gets an email that uses his birth name, he nearly cancels the trip altogether. The only thing that keeps Joël going is the thought of that living statue who saved his life once before.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of new essays by an international group of scholars closely examines the works of Aristotle’s Organon. The Organon is the general title given to the collection of Aristotle’s logical works: Categories, De Interpretatione, Prior Analytics, Posterior Analytics, Topics, and Sophistical Refutations. This extremely influential collection gave Aristotle the reputation of being the founder of logic and has helped shaped the development of logic for over two millennia. The chapters in this volume cover topics pertaining to each of the six works traditionally included in the Organon as well as its manuscript tradition. In addition, a comprehensive introduction by the editors discusses Aristotle and logic, the composition and order of the Organon, and the authenticity, title, and chronology of the treatises that make up these works. As an appendix, the volume includes a new critical edition of the Greek text of Book 8 of the Topics. New Essays on Aristotle’s Organon offers a valuable insight into this collection for students and scholars working on Aristotle, the works of the Organon, or the philosophy of logic more broadly.

Download or read book The Transformation of Plato s Republic written by Kenneth Dorter and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My name is Dennis McKenna. I am a Physician Assistant and have been practicing as such for over 40 years. This book - Where Do Doctors Hide Their Wings - is a recap of my training and my first years in the field of medicine. The book consists of 27 chapters. Some may make you laugh while others make you cry. As incredulous and unbelievable as some of the chapters may seem - the stories and experiences are all true. These are real people - real events - and real stories of the care they received- along with a couple stories of my life as I progressed through this journey. The people, the patients, and my teachers and superiors have had an immeasurable influence on who I have become and how I practice as a PA. My mentors (doctors with wings) have taught me to love their craft and to continually hunger for ever-expanding depths of knowledge. It was at their sides that I grew to love my patients as persons. They taught me how to distinguish the person from the malady, honoring the best in each of them so that they may, in turn, contribute to others. Medicine is an art of restoring health, dignity, and value to all humanity. The laying on of hands to assess one's ills has a function of discovery and diagnostic value, but it is also an imparting of energy from the practitioner to the patient. I'm hoping this book will start a conversation between doctors and patients and once again we will all recognize each other as humans.

Book excerpt: A former abbot of one of the largest Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in the world, Khensur Jampa Tegchok has been teaching Westerners about Buddhism since the 1970s. With a deep respect for the intellectual capacity of his Western students, Khensur Tegchok here unpacks with great erudition Buddhism's animating philosophical principle--the emptiness of all appearances. Instead of commenting on a text or relying on a traditional framework, Insight into Emptiness uses accessible language specifically tailored to the Western mind. Engagingly edited by bestselling author Thubten Chodron, emptiness is here approached from a host of angles far beyond most treatments of the subject, while never sacrificing its conversational approach.

Download or read book Steps on the Path to Enlightenment written by Lhundub Sopa and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2007-10-28 with total page 729 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geshe Lhundub Sopa's Steps on the Path to Enlightenment is a landmark commentary on what is perhaps the most elaborate and elegant Tibetan presentation of the Buddhist path, Tsongkhapa's monumental Lamrim Chenmo. In this third volume of five, readers are acquainted with the bodhisattva's path and the altruistic desire to make service to others the driving force of spiritual development. It begins with an explanation of what distinguishes the Mahayana practitioner from other Buddhists and goes on to describe the nature of bodhichitta. Geshe Sopa then provides a detailed commentary on the two methods to develop this awakening attitude: the techniques of sevenfold cause-and-effect and exchanging self and other. While bodhichitta's significance in Mahayana Buddhism is universally known, Geshe Sopa illustrates how bodhichitta can motivate a devoted practitioner toward complete enlightenment and how this is accomplished through the performance of the bodhisattva perfections. Whether engaged in a scholarly study or personal practice of the Lamrim Chenmo, Geshe Sopa's guiding voice leads readers to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the bodhisattva way.
Download or read book Alexander of Aphrodisias On Aristotle Metaphysics 4 written by Arthur Madigan and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-04-10 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Metaphysics 4 Aristotle discusses the nature of metaphysics, the basic laws of logic, the falsity of subjectivism and the different types of ambiguity. The full, clear commentary of Alexander of Aphrodisias on this important book is here translated into English by Arthur Madigan. Alexander goes through Aristotle's text practically line by line, attending to the logical sequence of the arguments, noting places where Aristotle's words will bear more than one interpretation and marking variant readings. He repeatedly cross-refers to the De Interpretatione, Analytics, Physics and other works of Aristotle, thus placing Metaphysics 4 in the content of Aristotle's philosophy as a whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new edition of this celebrated anthology surveys the Western philosophical tradition from its origins in ancient Greece to the work of today’s leading philosophers Western Philosophy: An Anthology provides an authoritative guided tour through the great tradition of Western philosophical thought. The seminal writings of the great philosophers along with more recent readings of contemporary interest are explored in 144 substantial and carefully chosen extracts, each preceded by a lucid introduction, guiding readers through the history of a diverse range of key arguments, and explaining how important theories fit into the unfolding story of Western philosophical inquiry. Broad in scope, the anthology covers all the main branches of philosophy: theory of knowledge and metaphysics, logic and language, philosophy of mind, the self and freedom, religion and science, moral philosophy, political theory, aesthetics, and the meaning of life, all in self-contained parts which can be worked on by students and instructors independently. The third edition of the Anthology contains newly incorporated classic texts from thinkers such as Aquinas, Machiavelli, Descartes, William James, and Wittgenstein. Each of the 144 individual extracts is now followed by sample questions focusing on the key philosophical problems raised by the excerpt, and accompanied by detailed further reading suggestions that include up-to-date links to online resources. Also new to this edition is an introductory essay written by John Cottingham, which offers advice to students on how to read and write about a philosophical text. Part of the Blackwell Philosophy Anthologies series, Western Philosophy: An Anthology, Third Edition remains an indispensable collection of classic source materials and expert insights for both beginning and advanced university students in a wide range of philosophy courses.
