Book Gender Policy and Educational Change

Download or read book Gender Policy and Educational Change written by Sheila Riddell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-05-20 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender equality has been a major educational theme for the past two decades and has become interwoven with other policy themes, including those of marketisation and managerialism. Contributors to this strong collection are key researchers in their fields and seek to address the following questions: * What patterns are discernible in the educational attainment of girls and boys over the past two decades? * To what extent are changes attributable to gender equality policies? * What form have gender equality policies taken in different parts of the UK? * What has been the impact of European equality policies? * How have gender equality policies been experienced by particular groups including pupils from ethnic minority and working-class backgrounds? This book aims to take an overall look at how significant have been the changes in experiences, aspirations and culture of girls and boys and male and female teachers. It explores how attempts to improve equal opportunities in education have fared and examines the tensions and contradications in recent policies.

Book Gender Matters in Schools

Download or read book Gender Matters in Schools written by John Darling and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1996-03-01 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equal opportunities for girls is the subject of this far-reaching and topical study. The author analyses educational provision in the decades following the passing of the Sex Discrimination Act, and asks whether the school curriculum is male-orientated. Are women still presented as the second sex? Are they, as has been suggested, almost invisible? Is the language of the classroom sexist? Despite many apparent handicaps, however, girls actually achieve more examination passes than boys. There is therefore a problem of squaring up the disadvantages shown up in girls' experiences of schooling and the measurable outcome of that process - a conflict which this engaging text seeks to address.

Book Education s Abiding Moral Dilemma

Download or read book Education s Abiding Moral Dilemma written by Sheldon Rothblatt and published by Symposium Books Ltd. This book was released on 2007-05-14 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conflict between access and quality in education has been front-page news for decades. Policies regarding the role of elite universities, the organisation of secondary education, admissions criteria, courses of study, high stakes testing, and fiscal and programme accountability have changed with uncommon frequency, resulting in confusion and uncertainty. Yet it is the argument of this book that the tension between access to education and the preservation of quality is another chapter in the much longer history of merit selection in England, Scotland and America, and should be seen in its proper contexts. The underlying cause of the difficulties, however, is the dilemma created by two competing conceptions of virtue, one determined by merit judged competitively and the other more vaguely but emotionally supported by a broader view of worth. Merit is consistent with liberal democracy, but worth is the special province of social democracy. None of the distinctions is easily categorised by political party or ideology. They are the result of opposite moral impulses inherent in plural democratic societies undergoing the strains of internal and global competition.

Book Creating a Scottish church

Download or read book Creating a Scottish church written by S. Karly Kehoe and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights how the Catholic population participated in the extension of citizenship in Scotland and considers Catholicism’s transition from an underground and isolated church to a multi-faceted institution by taking a critical look at gender, ethnicity and class. It prioritises the role of women in the transformation and modernization of Catholic culture and represents a radical departure from the traditional perception of the church as an institution on the fringes of Scotland’s religious and civic landscape. It examines how Catholicism participated in constructions of national identity and civic society. Industrialisation, urbanisation, and Irish migration forced Catholics and non-Catholics to reappraise Catholicism’s position in Scotland and in turn Scotland’s position in England. Using previously unseen archival material from private church and convent collections, it reveals how the construction of a Catholic social welfare system and associational culture helped to secure a civil society and national identity that was distinctively Scottish.
