Book excerpt: Special education and gifted and talented programs were designed for children whose educational needs are not well met in regular classrooms. From their inceptions, these programs have had disproportionate representation of racial and ethnic minority students. What causes this disproportion? Is it a problem? Minority Students in Special and Gifted Education considers possible contributors to that disparity, including early biological and environmental influences and inequities in opportunities for preschool and K-12 education, as well as the possibilities of bias in the referral and assessment system that leads to placement in special programs. It examines the data on early childhood experience, on differences in educational opportunity, and on referral and placement. The book also considers whether disproportionate representation should be considered a problem. Do special education programs provide valuable educational services, or do they set students off on a path of lower educational expectations? Book excerpt: "The Big-Fish-Little-Pond Effect predicts gifted students educated in heterogeneous settings develop higher academic self-concept than those educated in homogeneous settings. Academic self-concept of students in multi-age classroom using the Primary Years International Baccalaureate Program (Primary IB) was compared to academic self-concept of students in single-aged classroom learning traditional curriculum. Data were collected (N=65) on third and fourth graders using the Self-Description Questionnaire. It was hypothesized that gifted and non-gifted students educated in multi-age classrooms taught with Primary IB have higher academic self-concept than children in single age classrooms. Results of 2x2 ANOVA indicated no significant differences between gifted and non-gifted students in these settings. in this study, academic grouping and curriculum have no significant effect on students' academic self-concept."--Abstract.

At that time, I served a number of schools in a prosperous suburb. I spent most of my time working with children with behavioral and learning disorders. I received very few requests to assist gifted youngsters and their teachers, perhaps because, at that point, I was not very sensitive to their needs. One autumn I was involved in something from which I derived a great deal of satisfaction-helping the teachers of a very advanced retarded boy with Down's syndrome maintain himself in a regular first-grade class. In retrospect, the achievements of this student, Jeff, would have justified my calling him exceptionally bright, given the limits of his endowment. I was interrupted from my observation of Jeff's success in class by a phone call from another school, one to which I had not previously been summoned. I was asked to discuss the case of an intellectually gifted child who was bored, moody, difficult, and disliked by those around him.

Book excerpt: The educational focus of the United States is on ensuring that all students are proficient in the areas of reading and math. Most academically gifted and talented students are placed in heterogeneously grouped classrooms; thereby, ignoring the needs of these talented readers. This quantitative causal-comparative study sought to determine if a difference existed between the reading achievement growth of gifted elementary students who were homogeneously grouped for reading instruction as compared to gifted elementary students who were heterogeneously grouped for reading instruction with a sample size of 119 gifted elementary students in the State of Georgia. Additionally, it looked at differences in pre- and posttest scores of each group individually. The participants were divided into two groups (homogeneous and heterogeneous) according to reading instruction type. An analysis of covariance determined that there was no significant difference between the homogeneous and heterogeneous groups. Paired samples t-test determined that there were differences in pre- and posttest scores for both the homogeneous group and the heterogeneous groups. Recommendations for future research are to conduct research with a larger sample and controlling for such things as teacher experience, teacher certifications, instructional methods, testing, and grouping.
