Book Exploring the Perceptions of Nursing Personnel Towards the Elderly

Download or read book Exploring the Perceptions of Nursing Personnel Towards the Elderly written by Romy L. Hefner and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this archival research is to analyze data previously collected, examining attitudes among nursing personnel towards the elderly with regard to possible age and gender biases. Little research has been done exploring the possible combined impact of age and gender biases. Furthermore, although research on ageism in nursing has found significant correlations between nurses' attitudes and education and employment agency, many of these studies are dated and results are contradictory. This study examined nursing personnel's attitudes toward the elderly by pairing a specific case description with an attitudinal scale. The data was collected from 105 registered nurses and nursing assistants employed in nursing homes and home health care agencies in the Chicago area. Each participant received one of two possible case vignettes. Both cases describe an older adult, which varies only by gender. Following is the Aging Semantic Differential Scale, assessing the participants' perceptions of the adult in the vignette on three dimensions, effectiveness, independence, and personal acceptability. A demographic survey was also administered. The main question of this study is whether reading a story of a male or female elder influences attitudes on the Aging Semantic Differential Scale. Another set of questions involves the effect of training and place of employment on attitudes toward the elderly. Univariate analyses of variance (ANOVA) were performed to aid in interpretation of significant differences on each of the three scales. No gender differences or stereotypes toward the elderly were found in this sample either because the Aging Semantic Differential Scale was not sensitive enough to assess them or possibly because with age, gender identity becomes tangential and age becomes the dominant categorizing factor. Significant training differences were also found indicating that certified nursing assistants had more positive attitudes toward the elderly than registered nurses, and certified nursing assistants in home health care agencies had the most positive attitudes. The professional socialization process and environmental differences are discussed as explanations for these results.

Book Nursing Staff in Hospitals and Nursing Homes

Download or read book Nursing Staff in Hospitals and Nursing Homes written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-03-27 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hospitals and nursing homes are responding to changes in the health care system by modifying staffing levels and the mix of nursing personnel. But do these changes endanger the quality of patient care? Do nursing staff suffer increased rates of injury, illness, or stress because of changing workplace demands? These questions are addressed in Nursing Staff in Hospitals and Nursing Homes, a thorough and authoritative look at today's health care system that also takes a long-term view of staffing needs for nursing as the nation moves into the next century. The committee draws fundamental conclusions about the evolving role of nurses in hospitals and nursing homes and presents recommendations about staffing decisions, nursing training, measurement of quality, reimbursement, and other areas. The volume also discusses work-related injuries, violence toward and abuse of nursing staffs, and stress among nursing personnelâ€"and examines whether these problems are related to staffing levels. Included is a readable overview of the underlying trends in health care that have given rise to urgent questions about nurse staffing: population changes, budget pressures, and the introduction of new technologies. Nursing Staff in Hospitals and Nursing Homes provides a straightforward examination of complex and sensitive issues surround the role and value of nursing on our health care system.

Book Long Term Care for the Elderly

Download or read book Long Term Care for the Elderly written by Betty H. Landsberger and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-10 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1980s the need for long-term care for elderly people in Western societies was quite obvious from the increasing numbers of old and very old people in the population. Countries had responded in a number of different ways to cope with this need. Originally published in 1985, the central theme of this book is to explore these different ways and to probe beneath the surface level of institutions and specific programs. Beneath this level are a number of layers of care, consisting of attitudes, beliefs and values on a social as well as personal level. Thus, chapters two to six explore the surface level of services, goods, treatments, institutions, etc. provided in different countries for long-term care. Chapter seven looks at another layer, the role of government, chapter eight at ethical issues of human rights and chapter nine at the base layer, the views of elderly people themselves. The book draws mainly on information from the UK, USA, Germany and Scandinavia and will be of interest to all concerned with the health and social welfare of the elderly.

This book was released on 2016-11-08 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family caregiving affects millions of Americans every day, in all walks of life. At least 17.7 million individuals in the United States are caregivers of an older adult with a health or functional limitation. The nation's family caregivers provide the lion's share of long-term care for our older adult population. They are also central to older adults' access to and receipt of health care and community-based social services. Yet the need to recognize and support caregivers is among the least appreciated challenges facing the aging U.S. population. Families Caring for an Aging America examines the prevalence and nature of family caregiving of older adults and the available evidence on the effectiveness of programs, supports, and other interventions designed to support family caregivers. This report also assesses and recommends policies to address the needs of family caregivers and to minimize the barriers that they encounter in trying to meet the needs of older adults.

Book Root Caries From Prevalence to Therapy

Download or read book Root Caries From Prevalence to Therapy written by M. Rocha de Olivera Carrilho and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Case reports and clinical trials conducted in various countries show, more and more frequently, a positive correlation between the presence of original teeth and prevalence of root caries in older age. Because this is a global trend, it is likely that the predicted increase in the worldwide elderly population may soon cause a significant increase in the number of people requiring effective means of preventing and treating root surface caries. In response to this development, a team of outstanding contributors has reviewed the most important aspects of root caries. This new volume presents their findings along with discussions of how to deal with this health issue that progressively affects the oral health balance. The chapters in this book are divided in four core parts: Epidemiology, Biological Determinants, Lesion Assessment and Features and Preventive and Operative Therapies. The collection of state-of-the-art articles provides a broad overview and will serve as a reference for clinicians as well as scientists and, hopefully, will encourage new research.
