Book Makishi

    Book Details:
  • Author : Manuel Jordán
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 92 pages

Download or read book Makishi written by Manuel Jordán and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Makishi: Mask Characters of Zambia, Manuel Jordán reveals the beauty and complexity of the remarkable masquerade traditions of the Chokwe, Mbunda, Lunda, Lwena/Luvale, and Luchazi peoples who live in the "Three Corners" region of northwestern Zambia, northeastern Angola, and southwestern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The distinct yet overlapping mask types and styles used by these groups reflect their continual interaction and demonstrate the constant reformulation of visual and performance genres. Relations among peoples of the "Three Corners" are further complicated by recent refugee flows, and the masquerades that Jordán considers and vividly illustrates in his field photographs reflect histories of compromise and creative tension, as well as contemporary struggles for survival. While exquisite masks drawn from the Fowler Museum's collections demonstrate long use, Jordán shows how new characters can be created within earlier categories, so that basic dramatic plots are preserved while reference is made to new technologies, foreign encounters, and the dynamics of social interaction in a rapidly changing world. In many ways, as the author astutely argues, the masks are a performative mechanism used to explain, cope with, and, often enough, celebrate life's most difficult transitions and transformations. Makishi vibrantly documents the ability of theater to perpetuate tradition while providing an adaptive leading edge.

In her innovative book, Beeby Lonsdale demonstrates how teachers can guide their students by showing them how insights from communication theory, discourse analysis, pragmatics, and semiotics can illuminate the translation process. Using Spanish to English translation as her example, she presents the basic principles of translation through 29 teaching units, which are prefaced by objectives, tasks, and commentaries for the teacher, and through 48 task sheets, which show how to present the material to students. Book Disruptive Leadership

Download or read book Disruptive Leadership written by Rich Kao and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disruptive leadership is a topic generating intense interest. Companies all over the world are trying to upend their industry through innovative products and services. Becoming a disruptive organization, however, is easier said than done. Even more difficult is being a company that continually disrupts. Is it possible to discern a code for how companies can achieve this? In this highly readable and engaging book, a disruptive leadership framework is proposed in which caring deeply is placed at the center of the model. By turning care into a focal point, a triphasic model is proposed that moves from the personal sphere (individual), to the corporate arena (organizational), and then to the global stage (impact). Nine keys are identified along this path for how companies can realize organizational excellence. While care may seem like a soft concept in the rough and tumble world of business, it is argued how it is actually an inspired manner for providing direction, structure, and know-how that leads to powerful outcomes. Apple is profiled as a leading example of leveraging what is termed the technology of caring deeply. Other companies, such as Nike, IKEA, Zappos, Starbucks are also profiled. Finally, a leadership canvas is provided to help activate the lessons shared in the book.

Book A Lexicon of the Homeric Dialect

Download or read book A Lexicon of the Homeric Dialect written by Richard John Cunliffe and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-09-07 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly a century, Richard John Cunliffe’s Lexicon of the Homeric Dialect has served as an invaluable resource for students and scholars of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey. As both an English-Homeric dictionary and a concordance, the Lexicon lists and defines in English all instances of Greek words that appear in the two epics. Now, with the inclusion of Cunliffe’s “Homeric Proper and Place Names”—a forty-two-page supplement to the Lexicon—this expanded edition will be even more useful to readers of Homer. In his original preface to the supplement, Cunliffe explained that proper and place names had to be excluded from the Lexicon “chiefly on the ground of expense.” Although the Lexicon has enjoyed perennial popularity, scholars have long lamented the absence of “capitalized” name-forms in the Lexicon. By consolidating the two works into one handy single-volume format, this expanded edition fills the only gap in Cunliffe’s indispensable reference. In his preface to the expanded edition, James H. Dee explains the benefits of uniting the two dictionaries. In addition, Dee provides a brief list of errata and a helpful key to Cunliffe’s system of referencing the poems according to Greek letter.
