Book Dietary Intake and Cardiovascular Risk Factors

Download or read book Dietary Intake and Cardiovascular Risk Factors written by William R. Harlan and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attention is directed towards possible associations between nutritional variables and coronary artery disease risk factors, based on data developed during the first US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1971-75). Relative body weight (weight/height-squared) was determined to be an important predictor of serum cholesterol and urate levels and of blood pressure levels, in US adults. This predictor, together with age and sex, accounted for most of the explained variance. Dietary variables (based on results from 24-hours recall or on a food frequency questionnaire) did not influence serum cholesterol or urate levels. Alcohol intakes however, correlated directly with serum urate level. Serum Ca and Mg levels and serum glutamic oxalacetic transaminase were found to be directly and independently related to serum cholesterol and urate, which were also related to each other. Other positive and negative influences on serum cholesterol and urate levels are discussed. Summarized data concerning this study are provided.

Book Dietary Reference Intakes for Sodium and Potassium

Download or read book Dietary Reference Intakes for Sodium and Potassium written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-08-26 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As essential nutrients, sodium and potassium contribute to the fundamentals of physiology and pathology of human health and disease. In clinical settings, these are two important blood electrolytes, are frequently measured and influence care decisions. Yet, blood electrolyte concentrations are usually not influenced by dietary intake, as kidney and hormone systems carefully regulate blood values. Over the years, increasing evidence suggests that sodium and potassium intake patterns of children and adults influence long-term population health mostly through complex relationships among dietary intake, blood pressure and cardiovascular health. The public health importance of understanding these relationships, based upon the best available evidence and establishing recommendations to support the development of population clinical practice guidelines and medical care of patients is clear. This report reviews evidence on the relationship between sodium and potassium intakes and indicators of adequacy, toxicity, and chronic disease. It updates the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) using an expanded DRI model that includes consideration of chronic disease endpoints, and outlines research gaps to address the uncertainties identified in the process of deriving the reference values and evaluating public health implications.

Book excerpt: The condition and characteristics of the black family have been subjects of intense debate since at least the 1960s, when the Moynihan Report and the culture of poverty theses held sway. Since then a consistent theme has been that black families are pathological. Despite the fact that research has been inconclusive and contradictory, political debate and policy have been strongly influenced by the pathology theme. This volume presents alternative approaches toward understanding the special characteristics of black families. Extending a special issue of The Review of Black Political Economy, the book focuses on the economic circumstances and decision making of these families, employing Interdisciplinary and cross-cultural perspectives. It examines the general responses of black families to various external factors such as economic systems, and to Internal factors such as interpersonal relationships. This compendium of current thinking and research will be of interest to professionals in a number of fields, Including family studies, counseling, social work, psychology, and sociology. It will be of practical use in training programs for service delivery systems Interested In Incorporating multicultural perspectives, as well as those specifically interested in black families today.
