Book Diet Nutrition and Crummy Or Chronic Diseases

Download or read book Diet Nutrition and Crummy Or Chronic Diseases written by John Chris and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2022-11-13 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The diets people eat, in all their cultural variety, define to a large extent people's health, growth and development. Risk behaviors, such as tobacco use and physical inactivity, modify the result for better or worse. All this takes place in a social, cultural, political and economic environment that can aggravate the health of populations unless active measures are taken to make the environment a health-promoting one. Although this report has taken a disease approach for convenience, the Expert Consultation was mindful in all its discussions that diet, nutrition and physical activity do not take place in a vacuum. Since the publication of the earlier report in 1990 (1), there have been great advances in basic research, considerable expansion of knowledge, and much community and international experience in the prevention and control of chronic diseases. At the same time, the human genome has been mapped and must now enter any discussion of chronic disease. Concurrently there has been a return to the concept of the basic life course, i.e. of the continuity of human lives from fetus to old age. The influences in the womb work differently from later influences, but clearly have a strong effect on the subsequent manifestation of chronic disease. The known risk factors are now recognized as being amenable to alleviation throughout life, even into old age. The continuity of the life course is seen in the way that both under nutrition and over nutrition (as well as a host of other factors) play a role in the development of chronic disease. The effects of man-made and natural environments (and the interaction between the two) on the development of chronic diseases are increasingly recognized. Such factors are also being recognized as happening further and further ''upstream'' in the chain of events predisposing humans to chronic disease. All these broadening perceptions not only give a clearer picture of what is happening in the current epidemic of chronic diseases, but also present many opportunities to address them. The identities of those affected are now better recognized: those most disadvantaged in more affluent countries, and --- in numerical terms far greater --- the populations of the developing and transitional worlds. There is a continuity in the influences contributing to chronic disease development, and thus also to the opportunities for prevention. These influences include the life course; the microscopic environment of the gene to macroscopic urban and rural environments; the impact of social and political events in one sphere affecting the health and diet of populations far distant; and the way in which already stretched agriculture and oceanic systems will affect the choices available and the recommendations that can be made. For chronic diseases, risks occur at all ages; conversely, all ages are part of the continuum of opportunities for their prevention and control. Both under nutrition and over nutrition are negative influences in terms of disease development, and possibly a combination is even worse; consequently the developing world needs additional targeting. Those with least power need different preventive approaches from the more affluent. Work has to start with the individual risk factors, but, critically, attempts at prevention and health promotion must also take account of the wider social, political and economic environment. Economics, industry, consumer groups and advertising all must be included in the prevention equation.

Book The Food Cure Eat Your Way to Good Health

Download or read book The Food Cure Eat Your Way to Good Health written by Christine & Sonny Gray and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poor health is America's #1 problem. Over 70% of us are either overweight or obese. Over 70% of Americans are on at least one prescription medication, and more than half take two. Preventable chronic diseases are responsible for the overwhelming majority of deaths in this country. Just two of these chronic illnesses-heart disease and cancer-together account for nearly half of all deaths in the U.S., needlessly taking the lives of 1.2 million loved ones each year. Currently, 94% of the calories being consumed by Americans come from meat, dairy products and processed foods with only 6% of calories coming from healthy fresh vegetables, fruits, beans/legumes, and whole grains, according to the USDA's Profiling Food Consumption in America. The Standard American Diet full of fat and sugar (meats and sweets) is depriving us of real nutrients that our bodies require for good health. In this eye-opening book, the authors reveal the causes of our chronic diseases and the foods that can make us well.

Book excerpt: Can food really take the place of medicine? While modern medicine certainly has its place and does more than its fair share of good, there is no denying that many of society’s most perilous chronic diseases are exacerbated by poor diets. Whereas infectious diseases used to cause the most number of deaths, the impact of chronic diseases now far overshadows that of infectious diseases. Diet plays a significant role in the development of a number of types of chronic disease, such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. This title explores the impact of dietary choices on the prevention, management, and treatment of a number of medical conditions and disease states including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and metabolic stress, critical illness, cancer, and HIV/AIDS. Conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, musculoskeletal disorders, rheumatic disease, anemia, hepatobiliary, gallbladder, pancreatic, and kidney diseases are covered in the subsequent title Diet and Disease II.

Book The Modern Nutritional Diseases

Download or read book The Modern Nutritional Diseases written by Ph D Alice Ottoboni and published by Vincente Books. This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of people have been using the low-fat, low-cholesterol, high-carbohydrate diet that has been promoted in the mass media for last half-century for prevention of heart disease and stroke. During this same period, the numbers of new cases of heart disease and stroke have not decreased as promised, but increased, and type-2 diabetes and obesity, which were uncommon 50 years ago, have grown to become major epidemics. In this book, heart disease, stroke, type-2 diabetes, obesity, and cancer are among the numerous chronic diseases appropriately termed modern nutritional diseases because scientific studies and biochemical facts clearly point to the modern American diet as a major underlying cause. The heart-healthy diet is based on faulty science ? it is sugar and starch, not saturated fat and cholesterol, that are responsible for high blood cholesterol, type-2 diabetes, and obesity. This book describes how the American diet has changed since the advent of farming and, in modern times, with advances in food technology. It presents evidence to show how these changes are implicated not only in causation of the modern nutritional diseases but also in other growing disease problems such as Alzheimer's disease, osteoporosis, senile dementia, and depression. Caring for one's health has become hopelessly difficult because the mass media, driven by advertising revenues, is the single most important source of health information for most Americans. The book is divided into three parts. The first part defines the problem. The second part provides the science that documents the cause/effect relationship between the modern American diet and the current epidemics of chronic inflammatory diseases. The third part describes dietary modifications that constitute a primary prevention program that can reduce the risk of the modern nutritional diseases and, at the same time, improve one's health and well-being. Alice and Fred Ottoboni, are both public health scientists who, prior to retirement, had worked for many years investigating and preventing diseases in population groups. Over these years they learned that diseases do not ?just happen.? Every disease has a cause, and once the cause is known, prevention is often a very reasonable and proper next step. Alice Ottoboni earned a B.A. in Chemistry from the University of Texas, Austin, and a Ph.D. in Comparative Biochemistry from the University of California, Davis. Her professional career focused on nutritional biochemistry and the toxicity of food contaminants and additives. She is the author of The Dose Makes the Poison, a plain-language guide to toxicology for lay people, first published in 1984. The third edition, coauthored with Patricia Frank, Ph.D., is published by John Wiley and Sons. Fred Ottoboni earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Stanford University and a Masters Degree in Public Health and Ph.D. in Environmental Health Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley. His primary professional interest was the prevention of occupational diseases. He is the author of Korea Between the Wars: A Soldier's Story,

Book Diet Health and Prevention

Download or read book Diet Health and Prevention written by Norman J. Temple and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronic diseases of lifestyle (CDL), such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, are the dominant family of diseases in the USA and across the Western world. These diseases are closely related to an unhealthy lifestyle. The book explores this family of diseases, their causes, and most especially the role of diet. This information will enable the reader to achieve a healthy lifestyle and prevent these diseases. But the book goes further: it also explores the big picture of how improved health can be achieved across the population. This requires encouraging people to eat a healthier diet. Towards that goal various other important topics are also examined including the dangers posed by the food industry and the great potential of government policy such as: * Food labels * Health promotion. This is a strategy where health experts try to persuade the population to follow a healthier lifestyle, including eating a healthier diet * Government policy. Health promotion achieves only limited success. This chapter makes the case that government policies are a more effective way to enhance the health of the population * The role of the food industry is discussed as it is responsible for the mass marketing of unhealthy foods * The population is continually exposed to large amounts of false and misleading information in the area of diet and health. By contrast, most books on diet and health are filled with highly misleading information. This creates endless confusion This book will appeal to anyone with an interest in diet and health, both those with and those without a background in nutrition.
