Book Factors Influencing Juvenile Sheltering in Sea Urchins Strongylocentrotus Franciscanus and S Droebachiensis

Download or read book Factors Influencing Juvenile Sheltering in Sea Urchins Strongylocentrotus Franciscanus and S Droebachiensis written by Michael Trent Nishizaki and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Juvenile red sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus franciscan us) are often found under the spines of adults, but those of the green urchin (S. droebachiensis) do not shelter to the same extent. As broadcast-spawners with free-swimming larvae, two questions arise: (1) why and; (2) how does sheltering occur? Juvenile S. franciscanus increased sheltering in response to increased predation risk and hydrodynamic factors, whereas juvenile S. droebachiensis did not. Sheltering afforded protection from a predatory starfish (i.e. Pycnopodia helianthoides) in S. franciscanus but not S. droebachiensis. Water velocities were reduced by 90% within 5 cm of adults where juveniles sheltered. Field surveys confirmed that juvenile abundance is positively correlated with increased water motion. However, results indicate that juveniles compete with adults for kelp, displaying lower growth rates when exposed to adults. Juvenile S. franciscanus displayed consistent movement towards a secondary chemical signal released by adults exposed to P. helianthoides, whereas adults did not respond in the same manner. These results highlight the importance of post-settlement processes and call for the inclusion of juvenile stages in predictions of recruitment and population dynamics."--Page ii.

Book The Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate

Download or read book The Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate written by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-30 with total page 755 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the leading international body for assessing the science related to climate change. It provides policymakers with regular assessments of the scientific basis of human-induced climate change, its impacts and future risks, and options for adaptation and mitigation. This IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate is the most comprehensive and up-to-date assessment of the observed and projected changes to the ocean and cryosphere and their associated impacts and risks, with a focus on resilience, risk management response options, and adaptation measures, considering both their potential and limitations. It brings together knowledge on physical and biogeochemical changes, the interplay with ecosystem changes, and the implications for human communities. It serves policymakers, decision makers, stakeholders, and all interested parties with unbiased, up-to-date, policy-relevant information. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Book Perspectives on Integrated Coastal Zone Management

Download or read book Perspectives on Integrated Coastal Zone Management written by Wim Salomons and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All coastal areas are facing a growing range of stresses and shocks, the scale of which now poses threats to the resilience of both human and environmental coastal systems. Responsible agencies are seeking better ways of managing the causes and consequences of the environmental change process in coastal zones. This volume discusses the basic principles underpinning a more integrated approach to coastal management and highlights the obstacles that may be met in practice in both developed and developing countries. Successful strategies will have to encompass all the elements of management, from planning and design through financing and implementation, as highlighted in this book.

Book Biological Oceanography An Introduction

Download or read book Biological Oceanography An Introduction written by Carol Lalli and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1997-04-10 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This popular undergraduate textbook offers students a firm grounding in the fundamentals of biological oceanography. As well as a clear and accessible text, learning is enhanced with numerous illustrations including a colour section, thorough chapter summaries, and questions with answers and comments at the back of the book. The comprehensive coverage of this book encompasses the properties of seawater which affect life in the ocean, classification of marine environments and organisms, phytoplankton and zooplankton, marine food webs, larger marine animals (marine mammals, seabirds and fish), life on the seafloor, and the way in which humans affect marine ecosystems. The second edition has been thoroughly updated, including much data available for the first time in a book at this level. There is also a new chapter on human impacts - from harvesting vast amounts of fish, pollution, and deliberately or accidentally transferring marine organisms to new environments. This book complements the Open University Oceanography Series, also published by Butterworth-Heinemann, and is a set text for the Open University third level course, S330. - A leading undergraduate text - New chapter on human impacts - a highly topical subject - Expanded colour plate section

Book Temperature Biology of Animals

Download or read book Temperature Biology of Animals written by Andrew Cossins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Temperature is one facet in the mosaic of physical and biotic factors that describes the niche of an animal. Ofthe physical factors it is ecologically the most important. for it is a factor that is all-pervasive and one that. in most environments. lacks spatial or temporal constancy. Evolution has produced a wide variety of adaptive strategies and tactics to exploit or deal with this variable environmental factor. The ease with which temperature can be measured. and controlled experimentally. together with its widespread influence on the affairs of animals. has understandably led to a large. dispersed literature. In spite of this no recent book provides a comprehensive treatment of the biology of animals in relation to temperature. Our intention in writing this book was to fill that gap. We hope we have provided a modern statement with a critical synthesis of this diverse field. which will be suitable and stimulating for both advanced undergraduate and post graduate students of biology. This book is emphatically not intended as a monographical review. as thermal biology is such a diverse. developed discipline that it could not be encompassed within the confines of a book of this size.

Book Cold Adapted Organisms

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rosa Margesin
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 1999-05-06
  • ISBN : 9783540649731
  • Pages : 432 pages

Download or read book Cold Adapted Organisms written by Rosa Margesin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-05-06 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major parts of the oceans and lands of our planet are permanently, or temporarily, exposed to temperatures below 10 C. Microorganisms, plants and animals living under these conditions have adapted to their environments in such a way that metabolic processes, reproduction and survival strategies are optimal for their natural biotopes. This book presents the most recent knowledge of the ecology and the physiology of cold-adapted microorganisms, plants and animals, and explains the mechanisms of cold-adaptation on the enzymatic and molecular level, including results from the first crystal structures of enzymes of cold-adapted organisms.
