Im ersten Teil werden die Begriffe Kultur und Interkulturalität aus verschiedenen Perspektiven betrachtet und geschaut wie der Bezug zwischen der Kultur und der Interkulturalität hergestellt werden kann. Im weiteren Verlauf werden Hürden des Bildungssystems sowie die Rolle der Lehrkraft aufgezeigt, die das interkulturelle Lernen in der Schule beeinträchtigen. Darauf basierend werden im letzten Teil der Arbeit Möglichkeiten zur Umsetzung des interkulturellen Lernens in der Schule dargelegt, sodass Kinder zu toleranten und vorurteilsfreien Menschen erzogen werden können. Kinder begegnen einer Vielfalt von Sprachen und Kulturen von klein auf zum Beispiel unter anderem in der Kindertagesstätte, auf dem Spielplatz, im Fernsehen oder im Klassenzimmer. Innerhalb der Schule treffen viele Biographien mit unterschiedlichen Lebenserfahrungen und Familiengeschichten aufeinander. Der Grundschule steht die Aufgabe zu, die Heterogenität der Schülerschaft als Chance zu nutzen, um Verhaltensweisen für das Zusammenleben von Menschen unterschiedlicher kultureller, sprachlicher und religiöser Herkunft aufzubauen. Mithilfe des interkulturellen Lernens öffnet sich der Unterricht für vielfältige Erfahrungen aller Beteiligten. Der Klassenraum wird zum Erzählen sowie Teilen von Erfahrungen und Sprechen über Biographien genutzt, sodass Unterschiede zwischen den Kindern nicht als eine Ungleichheit, sondern als eine gegenseitige Bereicherung wahrgenommen werden. Die Schere zwischen dem Kind und der Schule wird immer größer, wenn nicht die Vorerfahrungen und Mehrsprachigkeit in den Schulalltag integriert werden. Die interkulturelle Kompetenz trägt zur Persönlichkeits- und Identitätsbildung bei, indem kulturelle Differenzen und Perspektiven als bedeutsame Gegebenheit entdeckt und anerkannt werden.

Book excerpt: The Acquisition of German: Introducing Organic Grammar brings together work on the acquisition of German from over four decades of child L1 and immigrant L2 learner studies. The book’s major feature is new longitudinal data from three secondary school students who began an exchange year in Germany with no German knowledge and attained fluency. Their naturalistic acquisition process — with a succession of stages described for the first time in L2 acquisition — is highly similar to that of younger learners. This has important implications for German teaching and for the theory of Universal Grammar and acquisition. Organic Grammar, a variant of generative syntax, is offered as a practical alternative to Chomsky’s Minimalism. The analysis focuses on extensive monthly samples of the three students’ German development in an input-rich environment. Similar to previous studies, the teenagers build syntactic structure from the bottom up. Two acquired correct word order by the end of the year, the third, who had greater conscious awareness of German grammar, had a divergent route of development, suggesting that language awareness can alter a natural developmental path. The results are addressed in light of recent debates in child-adult differences.
