Book excerpt: Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2017 im Fachbereich Philosophie - Praktische (Ethik, Ästhetik, Kultur, Natur, Recht, ...), Note: 1,7, Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Im Folgenden werde ich auf die Geschichte des Vegetarismus von der griechischen Antike bis heute eingehen und anschließend die verschiedenen Aspekte beleuchten, die Einfluss auf die Hinwendung zum Vegetarismus nehmen. „Nichts wird die Gesundheit der Menschen und die Chancen auf ein Überleben auf der Erde so steigern wie der Schritt zur vegetarischen Ernährung.“ Dies sagte bereits vor Jahrzehnten Albert Einstein. Ein erstaunlicher Ausspruch, wenn man bedenkt, dass man zu dieser Zeit noch über wenig wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse über die Zusammenhänge und Auswirkungen von Ernährung auf Umwelt, Klima, Gesundheit und Tierrechte verfügte. Der Vegetarismus ist nicht nur eine fleisch- und fischlose Ernährungsweise, sondern kann als kompletter Lebensstil beziehungsweise als Weltanschauung gesehen werden, die sich in der heutigen Gesellschaft etabliert hat und die mehr und mehr akzeptiert wird. Das zunehmende Umdenken in der Bevölkerung in Bezug auf den Fleischkonsum ist zum einen eine Reaktion auf die BSE- Krise, die Vogelgrippe oder die zahlreichen Gammelfleischskandale der vergangenen Jahre. Aber auch Gesundheitsaspekte und wachsende Kritik an unserem Umgang mit Tieren vor allem in der Massentierhaltung sowie die massiven umweltschädlichen Folgen, die ein hoher Fleischkonsum verursacht, spielen eine wichtige Rolle für das veränderte Bewusstsein. Die Zahl der weltweiten Vegetarier wird auf circa 20 Prozent geschätzt, wobei zu berücksichtigen ist, dass der überwiegende Teil, nämlich 95 Prozent davon „Not-Vegetarier“ aus Entwicklungsländern sind, die sich schlicht kein Fleisch leisten können. Demgegenüber stehen 5 Prozent „Wahl-Vegetarierer“, Menschen in Industrieländern also, die freiwillig meist aus ethisch-moralischen, gesundheitlichen oder ökologischen Gründen auf Fleisch verzichten.

However, the same cannot be said for what concerns the mechanisms of selection and loss of historical and literary memory, where the voluntary awareness of obscuring is often part of a precise aim, thus leading the cultural memory of a literate society to become fragmented. The present volume explores the devices and criteria of selection and loss in Ancient and Medieval texts and the subsequent fragmentation of such literature, but it also addresses the questions of the damnatio memoriae, of literary strategies such as reticence and omission, as well as of known texts deemed lost but re-found thanks to state-of-the-art methods in digitization. The many and diverse nuances of the concepts of omission, selection, and loss throughout Ancient and Medieval literature and history are illustrated through a number of case studies in the four sections of this volume, each examining a different facet of the topic: 'Mechanisms and criteria of textual loss and selection', 'Lost texts re-discovered', 'Voluntary omissions and desire for oblivion', and 'Re-working the known'.

Book excerpt: Of the four chapters in this book, the first two discuss (albeit in consider ably modified form) matters previously discussed in my papers 'On the Logic of Conditionals' [1] and 'Probability and the Logic of Conditionals' [2], while the last two present essentially new material. Chapter I is relatively informal and roughly parallels the first of the above papers in discussing the basic ideas of a probabilistic approach to the logic of the indicative conditional, according to which these constructions do not have truth values, but they do have probabilities (equal to conditional probabilities), and the appropriate criterion of soundness for inferences involving them is that it should not be possible for all premises of the inference to be probable while the conclusion is improbable. Applying this criterion is shown to have radically different consequences from the orthodox 'material conditional' theory, not only in application to the standard 'fallacies' of the material conditional, but to many forms (e. g. , Contraposition) which have hitherto been regarded as above suspi cion. It is the first book that examines the interface between these different and yet highly comparable authors with consideration of their œuvres in their entirety. The fourteen chapters collected here explore a wide range of topics clustered around the following four themes: the combination of literature and philosophy; the ways in which Seneca’s choral odes rework Horatian material and move beyond it; the treatment of ethical, poetic, and aesthetic questions by the two authors; and the problem of literary influence and reception as well as ancient and modern reflections on these problems. While the intertextual contacts between Horace and Seneca themselves lie at the core of this project, it also considers the earlier texts that serve as sources for both authors, intermediary steps in Roman literature, and later texts where connections between the two philosopher-poets are drawn. Although not as obviously palpable as the linkage between authors who share a common generic tradition, this uneven but pervasive relationship can be regarded as one of the most prolific literary interactions between the early Augustan and the Neronian periods. Book excerpt: Despite the growing interest in Apuleius’ Apologia or Pro se de magia, a speech he delivered in AD 158/159 to defend himself against the charge of being a magus, the only comprehensive study on this speech and magic to date is that by Adam Abt (1908). The aim of this volume is to shed new light on the extent to which Apuleius’ speech reveals his own knowledge of magic, and on the implications of the dangerous allegations brought against Apuleius. By analysing the Apologia sequentially, the author does not only reassess Abt’s analysis but proposes a new reconstruction of the prosecution’s case, arguing that it is heavily distorted by Apuleius. Since ancient magic is the main topic of this speech, an extensive discussion of the topic is provided, offering a new semantic taxonomy of magus and its cognates. Finally, this volume also explores Apuleius’ forensic techniques and the Platonic ideology underpinning his speech. It is proposed that a Platonising reasoning – distinguishing between higher and lower concepts – lies at the core of Apuleius’ rhetorical strategy, and that Apuleius aims to charm the judge, the audience and, ultimately, his readers with the irresistible power of his arguments.

Book excerpt: The main focus of this book is the ancient formation and development of the canons of Greek historiography. It takes a fresh look on the modern debate on canonical literature and deals with Greek historiographical traditions in the works of ancient rhetors and literary critics. Writings on historiography by Cicero, Quintilian, and Dionysius of Halicarnassus are chiefly taken into account to explore the canons of Greek historians in Hellenistic and Roman Imperial Ages. Essential in canon-formation was the concept of classicism which took shape in the Age of Augustus, but whose earlier developments can be traced back to Isocrates, a model rhetor according to Dionysius at the end of the 1st century BC. The analysis explores also late-antique authors of school treatises and progymnasmata, a field where historiography had a pedagogical function. Previous studies on canonical literature have rarely considered historiography. This book examines not only the works of ancient historians and their legacy, but also the relationship between historiography, literary criticism, and the rhetorical tradition.
