Book Bound Hand and Foot and yet Dancing as if Free Satires II 1 II 2 and I 2 from Alexander Pope s Imitations of Horace

Download or read book Bound Hand and Foot and yet Dancing as if Free Satires II 1 II 2 and I 2 from Alexander Pope s Imitations of Horace written by Gerhild Salcher and published by ibidem-Verlag / ibidem Press. This book was released on 2004-03-08 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embedded in a discussion of the 18th century literary practice of imitation, this study offers an in-depth analysis of the three full-length satires from Alexander Pope’s Imitations of Horace. Taking into account aspects such as content, metre, message, personal references, and language, the three satires are compared to their Latin originals, shedding light on how Pope succeeds in transferring the texts into his contemporary world and idiom whilst sticking very closely to the original framework on a larger scale. Thus, they “show the poet bound hand and foot and yet dancing as if free.“

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays primarily honours Bernfried Nugel the teacher and scholar, but it also pays homage to Bernfried Nugel the indefatigable worker in the cause of Aldous Huxley studies. It is due to this latter manifestation that many of the contributors to this volume know each other personally, having met at one or more of the international conferences that Professor Nugel organized and either hosted or co-hosted. At Munster, his home university, he has also been instrumental in establishing and heading a center for admirers of Huxley's work, along with a fine library of Huxley materials, including manuscripts and numerous first editions. Book Satire in Narrative

Download or read book Satire in Narrative written by Frank Palmeri and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-08-04 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virtually all theories of satire define it as a criticism of contemporary society. Some argue that satire criticizes the present in favor of a standard of values that has been superseded, and thus that satire is generally backward-looking and conservative. While this is often true of poetic satire, in this study Frank Palmeri asserts that narrative satire performs a different function, that it parodies both the established view of the world and that of its opponents, offering its own distinctive critical perspective. This theory of satire builds on the idea of dialogical parody in the work of Russian theorist Mikhail Bakhtin, while revising Bakhtin's estimate of carnival. In Palmeri's view, the carnivalesque offers only an inverted mirror image of authoritative discourse, while parodic narrative satire suggests an alternative to both the official world and its inverted opposite. Palmeri applies this theory of narrative satire to five works of world literature, each of which has generated sharp controversy about the genre to which it rightly belongs: Petronius' Satyricon, Jonathan Swift's A Tale of a Tub, Edward Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Herman Melville's The Confidence-Man, and Thomas Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49. He analyzes the features that link these works and shows how the changing pairs of alternatives that are parodied in these satires reflect changes in the terms of social and cultural oppositions. Satire in Narrative will appeal to comparatists, specialists in eighteenth-century and American literature, and others interested in theories of genre and the relations between literary forms and social history.

Book John Gay s The Beggar s Opera 1728 2004

Download or read book John Gay s The Beggar s Opera 1728 2004 written by Uwe Böker and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2006 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Richard Steele remarked that the greatest Evils in human Society are such as no Law can come at, he was not able to forsee the spectacular success of John Gay's satire of society, the administration of law and crime, politics, the Italian opera and other topics. Gay's The Beggar's Opera, with its mixture of witty dialogue and popular songs, was imitated by 18th century writers, criticized by those on the seats of power, but remained a favourite of the English theatre public ever since. With N. Playfair's 1920 revival and B. Brecht's and K. Weill's 1928 Dreigroschenoper, Gay's play has been a starting-point for dramatists such as V. Havel (Zebrácká opera, 1975), W. Soyinka (Opera Wonyosi, 1977), Ch. Buarque (Ópera do Malandro, 1978), D. Fo (L'opera dello sghignazzo, 1981), A. Ayckbourn (A Chorus of Disapproval, 1984), as well as others such as Latouche, Hacks, Fassbinder, Dear, Wasserman, and Lepage. Apart from contributions by international scholars analysing the above-named plays, the editors' introduction covers other dramatists that have payed hommage to Gay. This interdisciplinary collection of essays is of particular interest for scholars working in the field of drama/theatre studies, the eighteenth century, contemporary drama, postcolonial studies, and politics and the stage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume develop the highly suggestive insights and theory of James C. Scott-especially those related to patterns of domination and subordination, the role of religion in supporting or opposing the powerful, and the "arts of resistance" by the subordinated-to tackle key issues in the interpretation of Jesus and Paul. All the contributors implicitly or explicitly assume a stance sympathetic with subordinated peoples of the past and present. While all pursue primarily critical literary, historical, and social analysis on New Testament texts in historical contexts, some also examine illuminating historical or contemporary comparative materials. In addition, some even find Scott useful in critical self-examination of scholarly motives, stances, and approaches in relation to texts and their uses. The contributors are Allen Dwight Callahan, Warren Carter, Neil Elliott, Susan M. Elliott, Erik Heen, William R. Herzog II, Richard A. Horsley, Cynthia Briggs Kittredge, and Gerald West.
