Book Deutsche Theologie Lesen

Download or read book Deutsche Theologie Lesen written by Mary Stromer Hanson and published by R. R. Bowker. This book was released on 2018-10-29 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deutsche Theologie Lesen is a textbook to learn to read German, particularly for students of Christian studies and theology. Twelve chapters include complete grammar explanations with a variety of practice exercises including answers for self-study. Several authors of German literature and many quotes of increasing difficulty are represented to provide the student with ample opportunity to read authentic texts. Reading examples from the Martin Luther Bible are among the easiest texts in the first chapter. Following chapters offer texts from German theology and philosophy to provide a wide variety of literature from various centuries. To make learning more efficient, this textbook takes advantage of the many cognates between German and English. The author has also learned the language as an English speaker and offers many shortcuts learned from her own experiences and mistakes. Native German speakers have proofread and offered suggestions as well. This textbook will also be interesting to students of the Martin Luther Bible and offers a solid grammatical foundation for doing further study of German. Some suggestions for speaking and aural understanding are also offered but may be omitted if indeed reading is the only objective. Many illustrations from the author's own travels are included to offer vivid and memorable examples of grammatical points and vocabulary. The author aims to give students the incentive to go on to further study of German language and literature after completing this introductory book.

Book Theology History and the Modern German University

Download or read book Theology History and the Modern German University written by Kevin M. Vander Schel and published by . This book was released on 2021-11 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Questions surrounding the genesis, development, and viability of modern academic theology have drawn renewed and heightened interest in recent years. Over the past decade, an increasing number of detailed studies have inquired into the emergence of scientific theology (wissenschaftliche Theologie) in the nineteenth century and its uneasy relationship with the shifting intellectual culture of the modern research university. This volume presents a unique contribution to this developing conversation, offering a focused treatment of the many-sided debate surrounding the tasks and limitations of historical and critical theology as it develops in the modern German university during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The fifteen chapters of the volume examine the challenges of the historical study of theology and the contested concept of scientific theology in the writings of foundational figures such as Kant, Schleiermacher, Baur, Ritschl, Harnack, Troeltsch, Barth, and Bonhoeffer. Yet it also attends to ongoing debates concerning the relationship between supernatural revelation and empirical-historical research, the rise and fall of historicism in theology, the competing locales of church and university, the appropriation of historical methods within Protestant and Catholic theological faculties, and the place and function of theology in the increasingly specialized modern research university. As the essays demonstrate, the implications of this conversation continue to resound in contemporary discussions of the place of the study of theology and religion in the modern university.

Book Oxford History of Modern German Theology

Download or read book Oxford History of Modern German Theology written by Barrett and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-06 with total page 830 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the closing decades of the eighteenth century, German theology has been a major intellectual force within modern western thought, closely connected to important developments in idealism, romanticism, historicism, phenomenology, and hermeneutics. Despite its influential legacy, however, no recent attempts have sought to offer an overview of its history and development. Oxford History of Modern German Theology, Vol. I: 1781-1848, the first of a three-volume series, provides the most comprehensive multi-authored overview of German theology from the period from 1781-1848. Kaplan and Vander Schel cover categories frequently omitted from earlier overviews of the time period, such as the place of Judaism in modern German society, race and religion, and the impact of social history in shaping theological debate. Rather than focusing on individual figures alone, Oxford History of Modern German Theology, Vol. I: 1781-1848 describes the narrative arc of the period by focusing on broader intellectual and cultural movements, ongoing debates, and significant events. It furthermore provides a historical introduction to each of the chronological subsections that divides the book. Moreover, unlike previous efforts to introduce this time period and geographical region, the volume offers chapters covering such previously neglected topics as religious orders, the influence of Romantic art, secularism, religious freedom, and important but overlooked scholarly initiatives such as the Corpus Reformatorum. Attention to such matters will make this volume an invaluable repository of scholarship and knowledge and an indispensable reference resource for decades to come.

Book Glaube und Theologie Faith and Theology

Download or read book Glaube und Theologie Faith and Theology written by Wolfram Kinzig and published by Evangelische Verlagsanstalt. This book was released on 2019-07-31 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Since the beginnings of Christianity, there has been a fundamental tension between faith and theology. The Reformation, with its principle of sola fide on the one hand and its institutionalisation of a scripture-based academic theology on the other hand, drew particular attention to the tension and suggested new answers to that problem. That effort contributed to a fundamental transformation of academic theology within the faculties of Protestant Theology which emerged as a result of the movement. In the past decades, however, academic theology has come under considerable pressure. [In much of Europe and North America,] The process of secularization has led to a massive decline in religious education and – partially as a reaction to this – to a trivialization of academic theology. At the same time, one can observe a global proliferation of evangelical and Pentecostal groups. These groups sometimes display a certain indifference towards academic theological training, or even reject it altogether. In view of this development the question arises to what extent the relationship between faith and theology as defined in the wake of the Reformation will in future continue to be religiously productive and may thus serve the churches and their congregations.

Book Protestant Theology and the Making of the Modern German University

Download or read book Protestant Theology and the Making of the Modern German University written by Thomas Albert Howard and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-02-23 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In shaping the modern academy and in setting the agenda of modern Christian theology, few institutions have been as influential as the German universities of the nineteenth century. This book examines the rise of the modern German university from the standpoint of the Protestant theological faculty, focusing especially on the University of Berlin (1810), Prussia's flagship university in the nineteenth century. In contradistinction to historians of modern higher education who often overlook theology, and to theologians who are frequently inattentive to the social and institutional contexts of religious thought, Thomas Albert Howard argues that modern university development and the trajectory of modern Protestant theology in Germany should be understood as interrelated phenomena.

Book Practice Practice Theory and Theology

Download or read book Practice Practice Theory and Theology written by Kirstine Helboe Johansen and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-05-09 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How might practice theories and engagement with practice contribute to and advance theological study of religion and religious life and practices? This volume explores and discusses how theological engagement with practice, theoretically as well as empirically, might profit from theories of practice developed in disciplines such as philosophy, sociology, education and organisational studies during the recent decades, but so far scarcely employed within theology. In part I, the volume unfolds key components of practice theory, especially as they have more recently been developed within sociological practice theories, reflect on their significance and potential with regard to theology. In part II, these perspectives are employed in the study of concrete religious practices - established as well as experimental religious practices, and collective as well as individual ones. By unfolding connections between theology and practice theories, and reflecting on practice theories' analytical and theoretical potential for theological study of religion, the book will be of interest for any scholar in the study of contemporary religion and practical theology.

Book Myth History and the Resurrection in German Protestant Theology

Download or read book Myth History and the Resurrection in German Protestant Theology written by Brent A. R. Hege and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Christian faith stands or falls with the confession that Jesus Christ is risen. While that assertion itself is perhaps uncontroversial, precisely what this confession means has been a subject of profound significance and immense controversy for centuries. Central to this discussion is the role of myth and history in the biblical witness and in the church’s theological engagement with the confession that Jesus Christ is risen. This book traces key trajectories of German Protestant discussions of myth, history, and the resurrection from its earliest critical analysis in the work of Hermann Samuel Reimarus and David Friedrich Strauss to contemporary appraisals by Eberhard Jüngel and Ingolf Ulrich Dalferth. At the center of this discussion stands Rudolf Bultmann, whose work on the resurrection sparked fierce debates that left a lasting impact on Protestant theology in Germany and beyond. The questions raised by these theologians continue to resonate in contemporary discussions of the nature and status of biblical texts, the integrity and truth of the Christian confession, and the meaning and significance of the resurrection of Jesus Christ for Christian faith and life at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
