Book Monk and Mason on the Tigris Frontier

Download or read book Monk and Mason on the Tigris Frontier written by Andrew Palmer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1990-04-12 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tur cAdin is a plateau skirted by the Upper Tigris in south-eastern Turkey. Syrian Orthodox Christians of Aramaic tongue still worship in its Late Antique churches. Monks converted the region and the most powerful monastery, founded in the fourth century, is still flourishing today. This book grew out of an attempt to document more fully the early history of this abbey. It aims to rediscover the practical and symbolic function of the monuments of Tur cAdin and place them in their original social context. A recurring theme is the relationship between village and monastery and, within each, between community and individual. The final chapters also contribute to our understanding of the Syrian Orthodox community under the Abbasid caliphate. A 500-page microfiche supplement contains the first editions of the Qartmin Trilogy, a monastic text to which the book refers, constantly, and the Book of Life, a unique quasi-epigraphical document of a Christian village and its will to surive.

Book Loyola s Acts

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marjorie O'Rourke Boyle
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 1997-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780520209374
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Loyola s Acts written by Marjorie O'Rourke Boyle and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revisionist view of Ignatius Loyola argues that his "autobiography"--until now taken to be a literal, documentary account--is in reality a work of rhetoric, a moral narrative that exploits the techniques of fiction. In radically reinterpreting this canonical text, our main source of information about the founder of the largest and most powerful religious order in Roman Catholicism, Boyle paints a vivid picture of Loyola's world. She surveys rhetorical and artistic theory, religious iconography, everyday custom, and an astonishing array of scenes and subjects: from curiosity, to codes of honor, to the holy places of Spain, to the significance of apparitions and flying serpents. Written in the tradition of Renaissance studies on individualism, Loyola's Acts engages current interest in autobiography and in the history of private life. The book also provides a powerful heuristic for interpreting a wide range of texts of the Christian tradition. Finally, this secular treatment of a canonized saint provides revealing insights into how a prestigious sixteenth-century figure like Loyola understood himself. • Author : David Harvey
  • Publisher : Classical Press of Wales
  • Release : 2002-12-31
  • ISBN : 1910589594
  • Pages : 575 pages

Download or read book The Rivals of Aristophanes written by David Harvey and published by Classical Press of Wales. This book was released on 2002-12-31 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of the 'other' comic poets of classical Athens, those who competed with, and in some cases defeated, their (eventually) better-known fellow comedian, Aristophanes, has almost eluded the historical record. The poetry of Cratinus, Phrynichos, Eupolis and the rest has survived only in tantalising, often tiny, fragments and citations. Modern studies in this field have themselves often been difficult of access. Here an exceptional cast of scholars, including most of the leading international authorities, provides a set of 28 interpretative essays to cover every one of these 'other' poets of Athenian Old Comedy for whom significant evidence survives. The work includes a comprehensive bibliography, and is a landmark in the study of Old Comedy.

Book Isaiah Berlin s Counter Enlightenment

Download or read book Isaiah Berlin s Counter Enlightenment written by Joseph Mali and published by American Philosophical Society. This book was released on 2003 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the essays in this collection make plain, Isaiah Berlin invented neither the term "Counter-Enlightenment" nor the concept. However, more than any other figure since the eighteenth century, Berlin appropriated the term, made it the heart of his own political thought, and imbued his interpretations of particular thinkers with its meanings and significance. His diverse treatment of writers at the margins of the Enlightenment, who themselves reflected upon what they took to be its central currents, were at once historical and philosophical. Berlin sought to show that our patterns of culture, manufactured by ourselves, must be explained differently from the ways in which we seek to fathom laws of nature. Many of the essays in this volume were prepared for the International Seminar in memory of Sir Isaiah Berlin, held at the School of History in Tel Aviv University during the academic year 1999-2000.
