Download or read book Francisco Varo s Glossary of the Mandarin Language written by W South Coblin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-08-01 with total page 1003 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western missionaries contributed largely to Chinese lexicography. Their involvement was basically a practical rather than a theoretical one. In order to preach and convert, it was necessary to speak Chinese. A missionary on post needed to learn at least two languages, the national Guanhua, the "language of the officials" or "Mandarin," and the local vernacular. The first lexicographical work by missionaries was a Portuguese-Chinese dictionary compiled in the late 1500s by Francisco Varo (1627-1687), a Spanish Dominican based in the province of Fujian, was legendary for his superb mastery in Mandarin. His Vocabulario de la Lengua Mandarina, a Spanish-Chinese dictionary, is made available to modern readers in the present study, which is based on two manuscripts held in Berlin and London. Volume 1 contains the text of Varo's glossary, with English translations offered for all Spanish glosses and Chinese characters added for all Chinese forms. Volume 2 includes a pinyin index to all Chinese forms in the text and a selective index to the English translations of the Chinese glosses. The Vocabulario is mainly devoted to the spoken language, but includes literary forms as well. Varo was also sensitive to other matters of usage, e.g., questions of style, new expressions coined by the missionaries, specific expressions in Chinese and in European culture, Chinese customs and beliefs, and aspects of grammar. The Vocabulario is recommended for readers interested in Chinese linguistics, lexicography, Sino-Western cultural relations and the history of Christianity in China.

Download or read book The Translations of Nebrija written by Byron Ellsworth Hamann and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1495, the Spanish humanist Antonio de Nebrija published a Spanish-to-Latin dictionary that became a best seller. Over the next century it was revised dozens of times, in nine European cities. As these dictionaries made their way around the globe in this age of encounters, their lists of Spanish words became frameworks for dictionaries of non-Latin languages. What began as Spanish to Latin became Spanish to Arabic, French, English, Tuscan, Nahuatl, Mayan, Quechua, Aymara, Tagalog, and more. Tracing the global influence of Nebrija's dictionary, Byron Ellsworth Hamann, in this interdisciplinary, deeply researched book, connects pagan Rome, Muslim Spain, Aztec Tenochtitlan, Elizabethan England, the Spanish Philippines, and beyond, revealing new connections in world history. The Translations of Nebrija re-creates the travels of people, books, and ideas throughout the early modern world and reveals the adaptability of Nebrija's text, tracing the ways heirs and pirate printers altered the dictionary in the decades after its first publication. It reveals how entries in various editions were expanded to accommodate new concepts, such as for indigenous languages in the Americas -- a process with profound implications for understanding pre-Hispanic art, architecture, and writing. It shows how words written in the margins of surviving dictionaries from the Americas shed light on the writing and researching of dictionaries across the early modern world. Exploring words and the dictionaries that made sense of them, this book charts new global connections and challenges many assumptions about the early modern world.

Download or read book A Dictionary of the Ugaritic Language in the Alphabetic Tradition written by Gregorio del Olmo Lete and published by Brill Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There has been considerable progress in the field of Ugaritic studies since the mid-twentieth century, largely because the increased number of texts now available has led to significant advances in epigraphy, grammatical analysis and lexicography." "However, it is difficult to access the proposals made in lexicography because they are scattered in various publications (and because scholars follow different criteria). This dictionary sets out the results obtained so far in a systematic way and provides answers to unresolved problems by applying recent techniques of lexicographical analysis and the conclusions reached in other branches of Semitic philology. It lists all independent morphemes ("words") and attached morphemes ("affixes") and the proper names of people (PN), places (TN), deities (DN) and months (MN). Each lexical definition is followed by a set of isolexemes, bibliographical references and translations in context. The work is an updated and considerably augmented English language version - prepared by W.G.E. Watson - of G. Del Olmo Lete and J. Sanmartin, Diccionario de la lengua ugaritica, vols. I and II." --Book Jacket.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The papers assembled in this collection deal with the early linguistic sources on the languages of the Philippines and Micronesia. Tagalog, Bikol, Cebuano, Iloko, Chamorro and sundry languages of the area and beyond are featured in the papers. The focus is on the first descriptive work devoted to these languages and subsequent early treatments and their potential interdependency. Several papers also address the issue of how "modern" the early grammarians of Philippine languages were and to what extent they did typological linguistics avant la lettre. The collection is a pioneer contribution to the history of descriptive linguistics in Southeast Asia and the West Pacific. Moreover it offers a window to the past for the interested members of the modern speech communities of the languages covered by the papers.
