Book excerpt: Beneath diversionary government rhetoric, in the reality of covert operations, there is no right and wrong. Behind lies that manipulate the oblivious populace, life is a gray area of ulterior motives and secret agreements, the final goal of which is the preservation and prosperity of the few who control the many. In this world is Mad God, a novel of shadowy denizens of blurred corners of human endeavor. Duty and its consequences are never questioned, but all humans seek love, even in a world that is determined to do them harm. Mad God is a compelling, sometimes shocking, and darkly funny novel in which nothing is as it first appears and the suspense builds until the very last word.

They raised her on their Pennsylvania farm to adulthood. Little did Ethel and Blair know how their decision would not only change the rest of Joyce’s life, but have an impact on who would be there for them at the closing time of their lives. Ethel and Blair experienced 17+ years of progression through debilitating illnesses, frailty of body, becoming invalids, along with both of them having Alzheimer’s. Although these years seem to have been taken from Joyce, it has also been a selfless giving by Joyce to this man and woman she came to call Mom and Dad. With her real-world, down-to-earth, tell-it-like-it-is attitude, just maybe Joyce can help one or two caregivers out there who are finding their situation hard to deal with.

Book Diary of a Caregiver

Download or read book Diary of a Caregiver written by Rex T. Young and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2009, my wife of over fifty-eight years was diagnosed with dementia with Alzheimers symptoms. My caregiving responsibilities began before that time and continued until her death in January 2018. She was provided care in her own home. As time went by, the caregiver duties became more and more demanding. It was truly twenty-four hours each day and seven days each week. My sweetheart was referred to the hospice program as a patient beginning in 2013 with a life expectancy of six months or less. At the time of her passing, she had been a hospice patient for four years, eleven months, and five days. The Diary of a Caregiver begins with her entry into the hospice program and continues until her death. Caregiving can be very frustrating at times as one never knows what to expect or when to expect it. The Diary of a Caregiver identifies many of the problems and frustrations associated with care of a dementia patient. It also identifies different techniques and solutions to some of those problems. It should be of interest to anyone who is involved in caregiving, especially those who are just beginning.

Book Caring for Nigel

Download or read book Caring for Nigel written by Eileen Murray and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the age of sixty-nine Nigel Murray, a retired university lecturer and former Royal Navy officer, was diagnosed with Multiple System Atrophy (MSA). MSA is a rare and degenerative neurological disorder. It is very difficult to diagnose and often resembles Parkinson's disease. Dementia is not always a feature of MSA, but it was for Nigel. For four years Nigel's wife, Eileen, kept a diary. This was her "safety valve" - an outlet for the daily stresses of caring for him at home as his health slowly deteriorated. In it she gives a frank and detailed account of his bizarre hallucinations, his challenging and erratic behaviour, the relentless struggle with his incontinence and the endless disturbed nights. Eileen's dry Scottish wit and remarkable stoicism help her through her darkest moments. Her diary will move you one moment and make you laugh the next. You can't help but smile at Nigel's trousers with the "appetite mechanism" and his special "anti-dandruff comb". As the dementia advances, Nigel retreats into his own busy world of naval and lecturing duties, harking back to his earlier days. Eventually, the burden of running her own "one-woman nursing home" becomes too much for Eileen and her quest to find respite care begins. This presents challenges of its own. This true and touching account offers a unique insight into the day-to-day struggle of caring for someone with MSA or a dementia-related disease, as well as the emotional, practical and financial implications. A proportion of the proceeds from this book will be donated to the Multiple System Atrophy Trust.

Book Going All the Way Round

Download or read book Going All the Way Round written by Elinor MacDonald and published by Author House. This book was released on 2006-06-26 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although many readers will find Going All the Way Round a guide to the care of their own aging parents, it is primarily the story of the author's ambivalence about her care of her parents as they aged. She hadn't expected to be a nurse. She found all kinds of surprises in dealing with her mother and father and the demands of care-giving. For example, there were her attempts to hire aides for her dad who wouldn't steal the silverware or bring their horses or husbands to work with them, and her mother's forgotten savings accounts. Dealing with their many problems made the author a strong and determined person. Despite the pain involved, she would not have changed anything.

Her husband, Bob, serving as her primary caregiver, kept a journal the following four and a half years. Diary of an Alzheimer’s Caregiver provides an unflinchingly honest and heartbreaking account of what the couple went through. During the first two and a half years, Dee gradually lost short-term memory but maintained most physical and social abilities. Over the last two years she lost these abilities, most words, and long-term memory. She also became incontinent, suffered from undetected illnesses, and experienced psychotic episodes and uncontrollable, violent behavior. This is a brutally raw look at what it is like to lose a loved one to Alzheimer’s, including what the disease does to the patient and the effects it has on loved ones and caregivers. This personal view into caring for a spouse with Alzheimer’s will help readers understand the physical, emotional, and financial consequences of the disease, as well as provide support, advice, and hope to anyone in the same situation.
