Book The Journal of Education for Teaching at 40

Download or read book The Journal of Education for Teaching at 40 written by Peter Gilroy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-19 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2015, the Journal of Education for Teaching celebrated 40 years of original contributions on the subject of international teacher education with the publication of an anniversary virtual special issue. Its unique contribution to debates about the preparation and lifelong learning of teachers in a variety of fields, including medical education and language education, have been expressed in a variety of formats and international contexts. These include high quality academic papers using innovative qualitative and quantitative methodologies, symposia in the form of Platonic dialogues, and even critical positions expressed in verse. This virtual special issue was freely available online throughout 2015 but the strong demand for the papers has prompted their re-publication in this volume, with the addition of several more articles. Taken together, this collection will allow the reader to experience the variety of the dozen or so international contexts represented in the journal and its academic quality. Included in the volume is the original Editorial from the first issue of the journal. The fact that the points made in this forty-year-old piece still ring true suggests that the threats to high quality teacher education remain much the same as they did four decades or more ago. The Journal of Education for Teaching continues to provide an indispensable platform for colleagues to make their voices heard in what appears to be an increasingly shrill evidence-free environment. Long may it do so.

Download or read book The Art of Foreign Language Teaching written by Peter Lutzker and published by Narr Francke Attempto Verlag. This book was released on 2007-10-05 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores and develops the idea that foreign language teaching can be an art. This encompasses both considering the meaning of artistry in language teaching as well as the possibilities which artistic processes offer pupils in language learning. The first part focuses on the in-service education of language teachers in theatre and improvisation workshops, the second part examines pupils rehearsing and performing a full length play in a foreign language. Thus, this work views the fields of language teacher education and foreign language learning within a common conceptual framework.

Book excerpt: An all-in-one toolkit that empowers new teachers to meet the needs of diverse learners When novice teachers are assigned to teach disadvantaged students, the results are predictable: growing tension and frustration on both sides, leading to disengaged students and disillusioned educators. Gail and Rufus Thompson are renowned experts on bridging the instructional gaps between teachers and students who don’t look like them. In this book, the authors show new teachers how to flourish by building on the assets of their students and the students’ families. Yes, You Can! holds up a mirror to deeply-held beliefs about race and other variables of difference. Through interactive exercises, readers gain confidence and empathy that translate to success for students. The book includes: Powerful vignettes about real teachers and students that help promote teacher empathy and understanding Original research conducted by the authors on the confidence levels of new and experienced educators Targeted strategies for many student profiles: African American, Latino, Asian American, White, high-achiever, low-achiever, and more Before learning can take place, there must be mutual understanding and respect between student and teacher. Yes, You Can! ensures these critical links are strong. "This is one of the most useful books I have read in some time! Whether novice or veteran, if one truly wants to be successful in teaching children of color, this exciting book is an invaluable tool. From their extensive experience as successful classroom teachers, researchers, and leaders of professional development, the authors combine authentic scenarios, reflection activities, and suggested strategies that empower educators in being effective with students at all grade levels and from all demographic groups in our society." —Randall B. Lindsey, Professor Emeritus California State University, Los Angeles

Book Enhancing Teacher Education Development and Evaluation

Download or read book Enhancing Teacher Education Development and Evaluation written by Alyson L. Lavigne and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enhancing Teacher Education, Development, and Evaluation examines the complex role that recent educational reforms have played in the teaching profession. The failure of programs like Race to the Top to benefit teaching and learning outcomes has yielded many questions about what went wrong and how a research-based plan for true systemic progress could actually work. Covering inaccurate narratives about schools and student achievement, evidence for teacher effectiveness, and the history and repercussions of Race to the Top, this book culminates with a proposal for future research and policy initiatives that more accurately and more equitably prioritize the measurement and improvement of teaching and learning. Five concise yet comprehensive chapters invite teacher and principal educators, teachers and school leaders in training, district administrators, policymakers, and other stakeholders to better understand the implications of and possible paths beyond misguided reform efforts. An overview of the recent past and an inspiration for the immediate future, this definitive analysis offers insights into how more reasonable, empirically derived strategies will ultimately foster more successful schools.
