Being an entrepreneur – owning and running your own business – is a great career option for those wanting to take control of their professional lives. It's a particularly great option for women; a credible and viable alternative to struggling up the (still male-dominated) corporate ladder. Hugely successful entrepreneur Diane Foreman also believes women have a unique role in — and duty to — inspire, mentor, sponsor and promote other women. In this candid, engaging and inspiring book she describes her own entrepreneurial journey, from being a complete greenhorn to heading up one of New Zealand's most sucessful businesses, being a major exporter and an EY Entrepreneur of the Year. It hasn't been easy and she's made plenty of mistakes. The secret, she says, is learning how not to repeat them. Full of tips, insider knowledge and how-tos, this is a book no business person can be without.

Book Spartacus in the Television Arena

Download or read book Spartacus in the Television Arena written by Michael G. Cornelius and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-03-06 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spartacus, the Thracian gladiator turned rebel leader, endures as a near-mythic hero who fought for the oppressed against a Roman oligarchy built on the backs of slave labor. The image of Spartacus as a noble if doomed avenger is familiar and his story has been retold through history as a cautionary tale about social injustice. The television series Spartacus takes a different view, with a violent depiction of the man and his times and a focus on the archetype of the gladiator--powerful, courageous and righteous. This collection of new essays studies the series as an exploration of masculinity. In the world of Spartacus, men jockey for social position, question the nature of their lives, examine their relationships with women and with each other, and explore their roles in society and the universe. The series also offers a compelling study of the composite nature of historical narrative in television and film, where key facts from original sources are interwoven with period embellishments, presenting audiences with a history and a fiction whose lines remain blurred by a distant yet all-too-familiar past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the early years of Atlantic City (AC) boxing, the fight game was bustling. An array of ring talent, from club fighters to champions, came to the shore to compete at thriving venues like the Northside's Waltz Dream Arena and Convention Hall on the boardwalk. Although ring action was plentiful, the biggest fights were still happening elsewhere, and boxing was just one of many entertainment options in AC. However, everything changed once gambling came to town. As casinos popped up along the boardwalk, Atlantic City fights got bigger and bigger. By the late 1970s, boxing was on the rise, and within a few years, business was booming. Heavyweight champion Mike Tyson ushered in the city's peak era in the late 1980s, a time when more than just fight fans turned their attention to Atlantic City for some of the biggest sporting events ever. Although AC never again topped the impact of those days, boxing action at the shore remained vital for decades to come.

Book Power Profit and Protest

Download or read book Power Profit and Protest written by Verity Burgmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'a provocative must-read text for an engaged public, offering a distinctive Australian take on corporate globalism, and grounding this in a robust theory of social change that emphasises material power and interests, along with symbolic power and ideology' James Goodman, University of Technology Sydney Social movements transformed Western societies in the 1960s and 1970s: feminism, black rights, the peace movement and gay liberation all radically altered how we think and how we live. What has happened to social movements since then? Can demonstrations and other forms of social activism still make a difference in Australia? Verity Burgmann argues that corporate globalisation has threatened or transformed established social movements, and sparked powerful new forms of social protest. She examines the impact of globalisation and neo-liberal government policies on the feminist and indigenous rights movements, showing how they have been affected by the politics of backlash after decades of success. She explores the way in which the environment movement, too, has been affected by rising corporate political influence. She also analyses the emergence of anti-capitalist and anti-corporate activism and the profound challenges posed by this newest of social movements to the state, to society in general and to the labour movement in particular. These important factors in a changing political landscape. This book reflects on the significant changes which has taken place since Power and Protest was published in 1993.

Book The Rodeo Southwest

Download or read book The Rodeo Southwest written by Diane M. Cece and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tom Lacey and Samuel Embers were outlaws who split from the Younger Brothers Gang. Their handles were the Nevada Kid and Smokey. After the robbery of the Kingston-Downey Express, they took honest jobs while seeking refuge at a prominent cattle ranch. Tom had been shot through the left thigh, and taking on honest jobs was the only way Smokey could get his partner back on his feet again without getting captured. When returning to the O'Connor ranch from a cattle drive up north, they had no idea their cover was revealed to the local sheriff. They were arrested, tried, and convicted to prison terms. Smokey was released after five years, but Tom Lacey (the Nevada Kid) had to stay an extra two for misbehavior. What got Nevada the two extra years was his stubbornness and his bad-boy attitude. It was his sour venom that got him in there in the first place--that along with his love, respect, and damned cursed weakness for beautiful women. In book 3 of the Southwest Series, the Nevada Kid and Smokey are released from prison. Nevada heads southwest and joins the Broken Arrow Ranch rodeo circuit to make some fast money, hoping to reach the goal he set for himself of buying a cattle ranch. What kind of trouble does he get into there with his new friend Recordina "Ricki," the barrel racer? Who is cutting cinch straps, trying to cause a planned murder to look like an accident?

She never went to school or the doctor, and rarely glimpsed sunlight. Desperately malnourished, she couldn't talk and had never been toilet-trained. The social worker who took her into care had never heard of a case so horrific. The doctors believed Dani would never recover from such a terrible start in life. Then she met the Lierows - a unique, blended family who were seeking to adopt a child. Despite being warned that she was way beyond hope of a normal life, they were instantly drawn to her and sensed a bright light behind her pale complexion. When they finally adopted her, they showered Dani with so much affection and encouragement that she came to life for the first time. Proving all the experts wrong, Dani would go on to open up and express herself in a way that no-one could have expected. Dani's remarkable and heartwarming story is a testament of the power of kindness to overcome even the most seemingly insurmountable challenges.
