Book excerpt: INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER From Brian Moylan, the writer of Vulture’s legendary Real Housewives recaps, a table-flipping, finger-pointing, halter-topping VIP journey through reality TV’s greatest saga... In the spring of 2006, a new kind of show premiered on Bravo: The Real Housewives of Orange County. Its stars were tanned, taut, and bedazzled; their homes were echoey California villas; and their drama was gossip-fueled, wine-drenched, and absolutely exquisite. Fifteen seasons on, RHOC is an institution, along with The Real Housewives of New York, Atlanta, New Jersey, Miami, Potomac, and more. Over the years these ladies have done a lot more than lunch, launching thirty-one books, a cocktail line, two jail sentences, a couple supermodel daughters, Andy Cohen’s talk show career, thirty-six divorces, fourteen albums, a White House party crash, and approximately one million memes. Brian Moylan has been there through it all, in front of the screen and behind the scenes. The writer of Vulture’s beloved series recaps, he’s here to tell us the full story, from the inside scoop on every classic throwdown to the questions we’ve always wanted to know, like—what are the housewives really like off-camera? (The same.) How much money do they make? (Lots.) He has a lot to say about the legacy and fandom of a franchise that’s near and dear to his heart, and inextricable from pop culture today. A must-have for any fan of real drama and fake [redacted], The Housewives is the definitive companion to an American TV treasure.

Book Coal to Diamonds A Memoir

Download or read book Coal to Diamonds A Memoir written by Beth Ditto and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-10-09 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A raw and surprisingly beautiful coming-of-age memoir, Coal to Diamonds tells the story of Mary Beth Ditto, a girl from rural Arkansas who found her voice. Born and raised in Judsonia, Arkansas—a place where indoor plumbing was a luxury, squirrel was a meal, and sex ed was taught during senior year in high school (long after many girls had gotten pregnant and dropped out) Beth Ditto stood out. Beth was a fat, pro-choice, sexually confused choir nerd with a great voice, an eighties perm, and a Kool Aid dye job. Her single mother worked overtime, which meant Beth and her five siblings were often left to fend for themselves. Beth spent much of her childhood as a transient, shuttling between relatives, caring for a sickly, volatile aunt she nonetheless loved, looking after sisters, brothers, and cousins, and trying to steer clear of her mother’s bad boyfriends. Her punk education began in high school under the tutelage of a group of teens—her second family—who embraced their outsider status and introduced her to safety-pinned clothing, mail-order tapes, queer and fat-positive zines, and any shred of counterculture they could smuggle into Arkansas. With their help, Beth survived high school, a tragic family scandal, and a mental breakdown, and then she got the hell out of Judsonia. She decamped to Olympia, Washington, a late-1990s paradise for Riot Grrrls and punks, and began to cultivate her glamorous, queer, fat, femme image. On a whim—with longtime friends Nathan, a guitarist and musical savant in a polyester suit, and Kathy, a quiet intellectual turned drummer—she formed the band Gossip. She gave up trying to remake her singing voice into the ethereal wisp she thought it should be and instead embraced its full, soulful potential. Gossip gave her that chance, and the raw power of her voice won her and Gossip the attention they deserved. Marked with the frankness, humor, and defiance that have made her an international icon, Beth Ditto’s unapologetic, startlingly direct, and poetic memoir is a hypnotic and inspiring account of a woman coming into her own.

Book The World Until Yesterday

Download or read book The World Until Yesterday written by Jared Diamond and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-12-31 with total page 727 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bestselling author of Collapse and Guns, Germs and Steel surveys the history of human societies to answer the question: What can we learn from traditional societies that can make the world a better place for all of us? “As he did in his Pulitzer Prize-winning Guns, Germs, and Steel, Jared Diamond continues to make us think with his mesmerizing and absorbing new book." Bookpage Most of us take for granted the features of our modern society, from air travel and telecommunications to literacy and obesity. Yet for nearly all of its six million years of existence, human society had none of these things. While the gulf that divides us from our primitive ancestors may seem unbridgeably wide, we can glimpse much of our former lifestyle in those largely traditional societies still or recently in existence. Societies like those of the New Guinea Highlanders remind us that it was only yesterday—in evolutionary time—when everything changed and that we moderns still possess bodies and social practices often better adapted to traditional than to modern conditions. The World Until Yesterday provides a mesmerizing firsthand picture of the human past as it had been for millions of years—a past that has mostly vanished—and considers what the differences between that past and our present mean for our lives today. This is Jared Diamond’s most personal book to date, as he draws extensively from his decades of field work in the Pacific islands, as well as evidence from Inuit, Amazonian Indians, Kalahari San people, and others. Diamond doesn’t romanticize traditional societies—after all, we are shocked by some of their practices—but he finds that their solutions to universal human problems such as child rearing, elder care, dispute resolution, risk, and physical fitness have much to teach us. Provocative, enlightening, and entertaining, The World Until Yesterday is an essential and fascinating read.

Penelope Fitzpatrick wasn’t born to wealth. Her grandfather fed the family by selling his small stash of gemstones smuggled from tsarist Russia when the monarchy fell. Now, Pen has done well for herself as a successful novelist. Not one to accept defeat, Pen does the only thing she can do—gather a group of friends to help catch the crooks and steal back the necklace. Book excerpt: Pink Diamonds is a Bonus Scene (5,000 words) from Next to You. It's best to read Next to You first. "Obviously, this isn't a permanent ring." Jared owes Phlox a replacement engagement ring for the ring of braided grass he proposed with. But like most things with Jared Connor, that's easier said than done. Let's just say I spent more than two month's salary on it. Oh who was he kidding? The ring had cost more than his beloved Maserati. Their friends and family have gathered at Phlox's Connecticut home to meet and celebrate the engagement. Zee and Rye. Jake and Mina. Emma and Aidan. It wasn't even that Phlox was so concerned about a ring. It was Jared's ego that needed the ring, the symbol. He needed to show people that he would take care of her, that he would treat her well, that … well, that she was his. He wanted to laugh at himself. He'd always thought that falling in love would make him a better man. Instead it had made him even more of a Neanderthal. He has the girl. The ring. The "yes." Now all he needs is the perfect moment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Bogota Backscatter" is a sequel to the first work of historic fiction entitled "An Unlikely Journey" and, like the first novel, depicts one mans struggle with the U.S. Governments hidden agenda(s) and the ongoing struggle within himself to find his place in life. Fred Sager, a Ph.D. geologist assigned to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, travels to Bogota to assist the local scientists interpretation of the horrendous January 1999 earthquakes. In no time, he also finds himself attracted to a Chinese lady, also a geologist, and also there on temporary assignment. But is she really there to help her geology brethern, or does she lead a dual life? The following is a brief excerpt from the book: He looked at Adolph and asked, Did you understand any of that gobbledygook? Yes, it was quite well articulated, in fact. Adolph replied, his somber expression lighting up with a smile and I assumed he had decided to pay attention to what was being said after his last lapse of concentration. Even though Fred isnt a petroleum geologist, most of us learn the basics of that branch of the discipline in undergraduate school. Fred is good that way; he retains everything except what he had for breakfast, or where he put his car keys. Sounded like doubletalk to me, Tweedledum mumbled, so what exactly are you saying then, that Okradana geologists are mistaken about the location of a rather large deposit of oil? That theyre looking in the wrong spot? Thats a distinct possibility. I said. He failed to answer. Ill bet both of these yo-yos are attorneys, theyre sure as hell not geologists. How do we know youre not lying? Intentionally trying to throw us off the track? Causing us to delay operations, screwing us around? Tweedledum demanded, his voice becoming a bit hoarse and raspy now. You dont know. I replied, with a modicum of self-satisfaction in my intonation. Youll have to take my word for it. If youre lying, would you say youre lying? He asked. No, I wouldnt. If I were lying, I wouldnt tell you I was lying, that would defeat the purpose of lying in the first place. I said. Where should they be drilling? Where is this oil reserve? He asked. I dont know. I said. Does this Chinese gal know? He asked. Do I know if she knows? I replied. If she knows would you tell me? If she said I that could tell you, yes. I said. And if she said that you couldnt? He barked. Then I would say that I didnt know. As youre saying right now. Well, at least youre truthful. He replied, scratching his head and pacing nervously about in front of Adolphs desk. From the expression on Adolphs face, I could see that Tweedledums response had him baffled. I try. I said, again studying the quizzical look on Adolphs wrinkled face. Even when you lie you seem to be truthful. Tweedledum said, Wait a minute, were talking in circles here. Did you know that the ancient Egyptians didnt like pigs? I asked, trying one last time to break his spirit. Otherwise, they couldve invented ham. Dr. Sager, how about some straight answers to our questions? Feigning his frustrations now, trying to conceal the fact that he knew that I knew that he was playing a game he was supposed to better at than me.
