Book Wire Electrical Discharge Truing of Metal Bond Diamond Grinding Wheels

Download or read book Wire Electrical Discharge Truing of Metal Bond Diamond Grinding Wheels written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cylindrical wire EDM profile truing of the metal bond diamond wheel for precision form grinding of ceramics is presented in this report. First a corrosion-resistant, precise spindle with the high-electrical current capability for wire EDM truing of grinding wheel was fabricated. An arc profile was adopted in order to determine form tolerances capabilities of this process. Results show the wire EDM process can generate[micro]m-scale precision form on the diamond wheel efficiently. The wheel, after truing, was used to grind silicon nitride. Grinding forces, surface finish of ground components, and wheel wear were measured. The EDM trued wheel showed a reduction in grinding force from that of the stick dressed wheel. Surface finishes between the two truing methods were similar. In the beginning of the grinding, significant wheel wear rate was identified. The subsequent wheel wear rate stabilized and became considerably lower.

Book Cylindrical Wire Electrical Discharge Truing of Metal Bond Diamond Grinding Wheels

Download or read book Cylindrical Wire Electrical Discharge Truing of Metal Bond Diamond Grinding Wheels written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this research was to use the wire Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) to profile a metal bond diamond grinding wheel, and then study the wear and grinding performance of the EDM trued wheel. Diamond wheels are known to exhibit low wheel wear for precision grinding of ceramics but create difficulty in creating precision trued forms. With the increased use of hard engineering ceramics in mechanical design, new methods of truing these wheels had to be investigated. In profiling a vitrified bond diamond wheel, a Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) single point diamond or a diamond crush roll is often used. However, due to the high strength of the metal bond matrix, these methods cannot be implemented with a metal bond diamond wheel. Instead of applying a mechanical force, Wire Electrical Discharge Truing (WEDT) process utilizes electrical sparks to erode the metal matrix, which allows the non-conductive diamonds to simply fall away. A precision spindle was first built to rotate the wheel inside a traditional wire EDM machine. Once the process proved feasible, grinding studies were developed to compare the performance of a WEDT wheel against a diamond rotary trued/stick dressed wheel. Grinding force, surface finish of the ground silicon nitride parts, and wheel wear were all examined. The surfaces of both truing methods were compared using Stereo-Scanning Electron Microscopy to measure the protruding diamonds' height and identify the wear mechanism. Result of the research shows promise for the future use of WEDT as a truing method for metal bond wheels.

Book Performance Study of ScepterTM Metal Bond Diamond Grinding Wheel

Download or read book Performance Study of ScepterTM Metal Bond Diamond Grinding Wheel written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced ceramics are attractive for many applications in the transportation, energy, military, and industrial markets because they possess properties of high-temperature durability, corrosion resistance, strength, hardness, stiffness, and wear resistance. Unfortunately, these same properties make advanced ceramics more difficult to machine than traditional materials. The reliability and manufacturing costs of advanced ceramic components are significant concerns that must be overcome. Nevertheless, the use of advanced ceramic materials is expected to increase dramatically in new transportation systems in response to more stringent energy conservation and pollution reduction requirements. This study discusses the goals, commercialization plans, phased development, scale-up, testing, and external verification of performance of the innovative grinding wheel that evolved from the project.

Book Tribology of Abrasive Machining Processes

Download or read book Tribology of Abrasive Machining Processes written by Ioan D. Marinescu and published by William Andrew. This book was released on 2012-12-07 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws upon the science of tribology to understand, predict and improve abrasive machining processes. Pulling together information on how abrasives work, the authors, who are renowned experts in abrasive technology, demonstrate how tribology can be applied as a tool to improve abrasive machining processes. Each of the main elements of the abrasive machining system are looked at, and the tribological factors that control the efficiency and quality of the processes are described. Since grinding is by far the most commonly employed abrasive machining process, it is dealt with in particular detail. Solutions are posed to many of the most commonly experienced industrial problems, such as poor accuracy, poor surface quality, rapid wheel wear, vibrations, work-piece burn and high process costs. This practical approach makes this book an essential tool for practicing engineers. Uses the science of tribology to improve understanding and of abrasive machining processes in order to increase performance, productivity and surface quality of final products A comprehensive reference on how abrasives work, covering kinematics, heat transfer, thermal stresses, molecular dynamics, fluids and the tribology of lubricants Authoritative and ground-breaking in its first edition, the 2nd edition includes 30% new and updated material, including new topics such as CMP (Chemical Mechanical Polishing) and precision machining for micro-and nano-scale applications
