Book excerpt: Literature is a complex and multifaceted expression of our humanity of a kind that is instructively resistant to simplification; reduction to a single element that would constitute literature's defining essence would be no more possible than it could be genuinely illuminating. Yet one dimension of literature that seems to interweave itself throughout its diverse manifestations is still today, as it has been throughout literary history, ethical content. This striking collection of new essays, written by an international team of philosophers and literary scholars, pursues a fuller and richer understanding of five of the central aspects of this ethical content. After a first section setting out and precisely articulating some particularly helpful ways of reading for ethical content, these five aspects include: (1) the question of character, its formation, and its role in moral discernment; (2) the power, importance, and inculcation of what we might call poetic vision in the context of ethical understanding and that special kind of vision's importance in human life; (3) literature's distinctive role in self-identity and self-understanding; (4) an investigation into some patterns of moral growth and change that can emerge from the philosophical reading of literature; and (5) a consideration of the historical sources and genealogies of some of our most central contemporary conceptions of the ethical dimension of literature. Book excerpt: The mining and sales of diamonds by parties to participants of armed conflicts, notably in Africa, are regarded as a significant factor fuelling such hostilities. These diamonds, labelled 'conflict diamonds', make up an estimated 3.7 per cent to 15 per cent of the value of the global diamond trade. In response to public pressure to halt the trade of conflict diamonds and due to the persistence of diamond-related conflicts, governments and multi-lateral organisations have taken diplomatic action to combat the trade. Several international policy making forums, including the UN, have addressed the problem, and the international diamond industry and non-governmental organisations have proposed a range of reforms and legislative initiatives to halt the illicit trade. This new book examines the diamond-related African conflicts, the various methods that are being researched and used to 'tag' diamonds with microscopic markings, and the efforts taken to regulate the marketing and exporting of diamonds.

Watching players bluff in a poker game inspired John von Neumann—father of the modern computer and one of the sharpest minds of the century—to construct game theory, a mathematical study of conflict and deception. Game theory was readily embraced at the RAND Corporation, the archetypical think tank charged with formulating military strategy for the atomic age, and in 1950 two RAND scientists made a momentous discovery. Called the "prisoner's dilemma," it is a disturbing and mind-bending game where two or more people may betray the common good for individual gain. Though the Truman administration rejected preventive war the United States entered into an arms race with the Soviets and game theory developed into a controversial tool of public policy—alternately accused of justifying arms races and touted as the only hope of preventing them.
