Book Into the Dark Night and Back The Mystical Writings of Jean Joseph Surin

Download or read book Into the Dark Night and Back The Mystical Writings of Jean Joseph Surin written by Moshe Sluhovsky and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-12-24 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French mystic Jean-Joseph Surin (1600–65) was the chief exorcist during the infamous demonic possession in Loudun in 1634–37. During the exorcism, a demon entered Surin’s own soul, and the exorcist became demoniac. He spent the following eighteen years of his life mute and paralyzed. All the while his troubled mind conversed with God, and he composed hymns and poems that tried to comprehend his agony. Surin left detailed descriptions of the dramatic events that shaped his life and fascinated his fellow Jesuits. But Surin was also an author of spiritual texts, a spiritual director of souls, a poet, and a prolific correspondent. This volume is the first to offer English readers a comprehensive selection of Surin’s mystical writings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Since its founding by Ignatius of Loyola in 1540, the Society of Jesus ("The Jesuits") has been intimately involved in the unfolding of the modern world. The young Jesuit order played a crucial role in the Counter Reformation, especially in Poland, southern Germany, and several other parts of Europe. The Jesuits were also participants in the establishment and spread of European empires, engaging in missionary activity in east and south Asia in the 16th and 17th centuries, and becoming central to the spreading of Christianity in the New World. At the same time, Jesuits often tangled with the Roman curia and the Pope, leading to the suppression of the Jesuits in 1773. After the subsequent restoration of the order in 1814, the Jesuits continued to be leaders in Catholic education and theology. In 2013 Jorge Bergoglio became the first Jesuit Pope, taking the name Pope Francis I. In this book, Markus Friedrich presents the first comprehensive account of the Jesuits from a non-Catholic perspective. Drawing on his expertise as a historian of the early modern world, Friedrich situates the Jesuit order within the wider perspective of European history. In particular, he places the Jesuits in the context of social, cultural, and imperial history, showing that the Jesuits were not monolithic but rather were very sensitive to local context and that the order's core texts, especially Ignatius's Spiritual Exercises, were templates to engage with, rather than instructions manuals to be followed slavishly"--

Book God s Love Through the Spirit

Download or read book God s Love Through the Spirit written by Kenneth Loyer and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the doctrine of the Holy Spirit has often been a neglected subject in theology, it remains vital for understanding both the Christian confession of God as Trinity and the nature of the Christian life. In view of those two topics, God's Love through the Spirit examines the relationship between love and the person and work of the Holy Spirit in Thomas Aquinas and John Wesley - two very different figures whose teachings on the Spirit and the Christian life are found to be, on the whole, surprisingly compatible. An investigation into Aquinas's amor-based pneumatology, including a groundbreaking analysis of his recently discovered Pentecost sermon, and a fresh assessment of the doctrine of sanctification in Wesley show that in distinctive yet largely complementary ways, Aquinas and Wesley provide resources that can be used to reclaim a richer pneumatology, specifically in relation to the theological virtue of love.

Book Elizabeth Ann Seton

Book excerpt: This extraordinary book allows the reader to penetrate the heart and soul of Elizabeth Ann Seton through her writings to her friends. During her brief life (1774-1821) she was a successful wife, mother, and teacher. Seton was also founder of the Sisters of Charity, and is the first native-born American saint of the Roman Catholic Church. All of her accomplishments flowed from the fact that she was first and foremost a woman of prayer. She expressed that spirit of prayer in her writings, meditations, reflections, prayers, poems and songs, written for herself, her friends, and for her religious community. This rich selection from the saint's writings give us a glimpse into her heart and soul, and her very special relationship with God.
