Book excerpt: Poetry. "Wouldn't you like to know what happened when Marilyn Monroe made love to Joan Crawford? (Hint: a webbed foot was involved.) Why holy is a secular world? What Barrack Obama's grandmother thought? What the poet said to the truck driver? And why a fourteen-year-old girl would throw her newborn out a window? In Erica's impressive collection we hear a myriad of characters speak--some hilarious, some ironic, some tragic--and we can't help but listen. And learn"--Sharon Mesmer. "These aren't poems. They're ball gowns"--Rachel McKibbens.

Download or read book Chaucer s Polyphony written by Jonathan Fruoco and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-10-12 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geoffrey Chaucer has long been considered by the critics as the father of English poetry. However, this notion not only tends to forget a huge part of the history of Anglo-Saxon literature but also to ignore the specificities of Chaucer’s style. Indeed, Chaucer’s decision to write in Middle English, in a time when the hegemony of Latin and Old French was undisputed (especially at the court of Edward III and Richard II), was consistent with an intellectual movement that was trying to give back to European vernaculars the prestige necessary to a genuine cultural production, which eventually led to the emergence of romance and of the modern novel. As a result, if Chaucer cannot be thought of as the father of English poetry, he is, however, the father of English prose and one of the main artisans of what Mikhail Bakhtin called the polyphonic novel.
Download or read book The Dialects of Spanish written by Travis D. Sorenson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-08 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanish is one of the most widely-spoken languages in the world, and there is extensive lexical variation between its numerous dialects. This book, the first of its kind, focuses uniquely on the origin, diversity, and geographic distribution of portions of the lexicon. The hundreds of words analysed – related to food, clothing, vehicles, and certain miscellaneous items – provide a representative study not only of the many etymological routes by which they have entered the Spanish language over time, but of the considerable diatopic variety which they display across the different Spanish-speaking nations and regions. Representative maps are provided to illustrate several instances of these astounding dialectal differences. This variation is also discussed in terms of its evident link to the historical developments of Spanish. Providing a compelling overview of lexical variety in the Spanish-speaking world, this book will interest anyone who wants to delve into the richness of this fascinating language.

Download or read book The Sweet Hills of Florence written by Jan Wallace Dickinson and published by Hybrid Publishers. This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All Souls' Day - the Day of the Dead, 1941. Florence, city of strife. It is Hitler's state visit to Florence and the last of the good times for Mussolini. From now on, he and his lover Clara will cling more closely together, ever more dependent upon each other as their country spirals into civil war and their lives disintegrate. Annabelle and Enrico, young cousins from an ancient Florentine family, work first with the clandestine resistance, then openly with the partisans. Facing life and death together in the mountains, they forge a passionate life-long bond. How reliable is memory and can we ever expiate past sins? Are some ghosts better left alone? 'The Sweet Hills of Florence is a sweeping novel spanning time and distance between Italy and Australia, between Mussolini's Italy and that of Berlusconi, between past and present. It is a rich tapestry woven with skilful insight, of the culture and the times. In digging beneath the patina of memory in a search for meaning, it opens doors to the past and raises uncomfortable questions for the present.' - Sandy McCutcheon, author of Black Widow 'I loved how this story brought the contrast of Australia and Italy to life. This is a book that digs deep, as Jan Wallace Dickinson explores the bonds that define us and shape our lives.' - Lisa Clifford, author of The Promise
