Book Diagnoses in Assyrian and Babylonian Medicine

Download or read book Diagnoses in Assyrian and Babylonian Medicine written by Jo Ann Scurlock and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 916 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To date, the pathbreaking medical contributions of the early Mesopotamians have been only vaguely understood. Due to the combined problems of an extinct language, gaps in the archeological record, the complexities of pharmacy and medicine, and the dispersion of ancient tablets throughout the museums of the world, it has been nearly impossible to get a clear and comprehensive view of what medicine was really like in ancient Mesopotamia. The collaboration of medical expert Burton R. Andersen and cuneiformist JoAnn Scurlock makes it finally possible to survey this collected corpus and discern magic from experimental medicine in Ashur, Babylon, and Nineveh. Diagnoses in Assyrian and Babylonian Medicine is the first systematic study of all the available texts, which together reveal a level of medical knowledge not matched again until the nineteenth century A.D. Over the course of a millennium, these nations were able to develop tests, prepare drugs, and encourage public sanitation. Their careful observation and recording of data resulted in a description of symptoms so precise as to enable modern identification of numerous diseases and afflictions.

Book Conservation and the Genetics of Populations

Download or read book Conservation and the Genetics of Populations written by Fred W. Allendorf and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-10-05 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Loss of biodiversity is among the greatest problems facing the world today. Conservation and the Genetics of Populations gives a comprehensive overview of the essential background, concepts, and tools needed to understand how genetic information can be used to conserve species threatened with extinction, and to manage species of ecological or commercial importance. New molecular techniques, statistical methods, and computer programs, genetic principles, and methods are becoming increasingly useful in the conservation of biological diversity. Using a balance of data and theory, coupled with basic and applied research examples, this book examines genetic and phenotypic variation in natural populations, the principles and mechanisms of evolutionary change, the interpretation of genetic data from natural populations, and how these can be applied to conservation. The book includes examples from plants, animals, and microbes in wild and captive populations. This second edition contains new chapters on Climate Change and Exploited Populations as well as new sections on genomics, genetic monitoring, emerging diseases, metagenomics, and more. One-third of the references in this edition were published after the first edition. Each of the 22 chapters and the statistical appendix have a Guest Box written by an expert in that particular topic (including James Crow, Louis Bernatchez, Loren Rieseberg, Rick Shine, and Lisette Waits). This book is essential for advanced undergraduate and graduate students of conservation genetics, natural resource management, and conservation biology, as well as professional conservation biologists working for wildlife and habitat management agencies. Book Fish Parasites

Download or read book Fish Parasites written by Woo and published by CABI. This book was released on 2011 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on pathobiology and protective strategies against protozoan and metazoan parasites of fish, this book reviews the latest research on important parasites: those that cause financial hardships to the aquaculture industry, have been introduced to new geographical regions through transportation of infected fish, are pathogenic to groups of finfish and detrimental to production, are highly adaptable and not host-specific with worldwide distributions, and that may serve as disease models for studies on other pathogens. It also highlights gaps in the knowledge to help direct future research.

Book Diagnosis and Control of Diseases of Fish and Shellfish

Download or read book Diagnosis and Control of Diseases of Fish and Shellfish written by Brian Austin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a continual expansion in aquaculture, such that total production is fast approaching that of wild-caught fisheries. Yet the expansion is marred by continued problems of disease. New pathogens emerge, and others become associated with new conditions. Some of these pathogens become well established, and develop into major killers of aquatic species. Diagnosis and Control of Diseases of Fish and Shellfish focuses on the diagnosis and control of diseases of fish and shellfish, notably those affecting aquaculture. Divided into 12 chapters, the book discusses the range of bacterial, viral and parasitic pathogens, their trends, emerging problems, and the relative significance to aquaculture. Developments in diagnostics and disease management, including the widespread use of serological and molecular methods, are presented. Application/dose and mode of action of prebiotics, probiotics and medicinal plant products used to control disease are examined, as well as the management and hygiene precautions that can be taken to prevent/control the spread of disease. This book will be a valuable resource for researchers, students, diagnosticians, veterinarians, fish pathologists and microbiologists concerned with the management of diseases of fish and shellfish.

Book Molecular Diagnosis of Salmonid Diseases

Download or read book Molecular Diagnosis of Salmonid Diseases written by Carey O. Cunningham and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reviews: Methods and Technology in Fish Biology and Fisheries published by Kluwer Academic Publishers is a book series dedicated to the publication of information on advanced, forward-looking methodologies, technologies, or perspectives in fish and fisheries. This series is especially dedicated to relevant topics addressing global, international concern in fish and fisheries. Humans continue to challenge our environments with new technologies and technological applications. The dynamic creativity of our own species often tends to place the greatest burden on our supporting ecosystems. This is especially true for aquatic networks of creeks, lakes, rivers and ocean environments. We also frequently use our conceptual powers to balance conflicting requirements and demands on nature and continue to develop new approaches and tools to provide sustainable resources as well as conserve what we hold most dear on local and global scales. This book series will provide a window into the developing dynamic among humans, aquatic ecosystems (both freshwater and marine), and the organisms that inhabit aquatic environments. There are many reasons to doubt the increasing social and economic value technology has gained over the last two centuries. Science and technology represent stages in human development. I agree with Ernst Mayer when he said in Toward a New Philosophy of Biology (1988) that "endeavors to solve all scientific problems by pure logic and refined measurements are unproductive, if not totally irrelevant.

Book Recent Advances in Fish Farms

Download or read book Recent Advances in Fish Farms written by Faruk Aral and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2011-11-21 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world keeps changing. There are always risks associated with change. To make careful risk assessment it is always needed to re-evaluate the information according to new findings in research. Scientific knowledge is essential in determining the strategy for fish farming. This information should be updated and brought into line with the required conditions of the farm. Therefore, books are one of the indispensable tools for following the results in research and sources to draw information from. The chapters in this book include photos and figures based on scientific literature. Each section is labeled with references for readers to understand, figures, tables and text. Another advantage of the book is the "systematic writing" style of each chapter. There are several existing scientific volumes that focus specially on fish farms. The book consists of twelve distinct chapters. A wide variety of scientists, researchers and other will benefit from this book.
