Book excerpt: he Lower Tertiary Kootznahoo Formation, a clastic unit, crops out in scattered areas in the Admiralty Trough, southeastern Alaska. The formation consists mainly of arkosic sandstone, conglomerate, and lesser amounts of coal and shale. Samples were collected and outcrops described from three main outcrop localities in an area beginning in the Kootznahoo Inlet area on the west-central side of Admiralty Island and extending southward to the Keku Strait area between Kuiu and Kupreanof Islands. X-ray diffraction, optical mineralogy, scanning electron micrographs, and stable isotope and other chemical analyses were utilized during sample studies. Three stagtts of diagenesis were recognized. Stage I occurred under the conditions of nonmarine fluvial and paludal deposition and was characterized by development of sideritic concretions and cement. Stage II was characterized by local uplift of the formation and the entrance of oxygenated meteoric ground water, which resulted primarily in kaolinization. Stage Ill was characterized by the deposition of calcite and dolomite apparently in response to subsidence and the invasion of the unit by ground water of marine origin. Uranium mineralization associated with carbonaceous material has been found only where diagenesis to stage II has occurred. Scattered carbonized wood fragments enriched to as much ·as 0.2% uranium were found in a sandstone bed in the Kootznahoo Formation near Kadake Bay on Kuiu Island. The source of the uranium appears to be a heavy-mineral zone within the sandstone. Parts of the Kootznahoo where stage II diagenesis has occurred are favorable uranium exploration targets, but exposures are poor and the probability of finding commercial size deposits is low.

PURSER 1 Introduction A symposium convened during the Vth International Coral Reef Congress in Papeete, Tahiti, 1985, encouraged the editors to assemble this volume of case studies by participating and, especially, by nonparticipating scientists. An attempt was made to include case studies from various regions and geological periods, carried out on various scales from regional to ultrastructural. We hope to present an overall view of reef diagenesis. Although the volume focuses on reef diagenesis, fields also to be considered are biology, paleontology, and sedimentary facies distribution, as they provide the context and, to some extent, encompass the determinants of diagenetic processes. The scope has been limited to reef diagenesis because we feel that reefs have relatively clearly defined geometries, which facilitate the evaluation of diagenetic trends and the definition of diagenetic models. On the other hand, their many different components make reefs somewhat more complex than other deposits, and this creates difficulties in deciphering diagenetic histories; the study of reefs, therefore, is not the simplest manner of solving the many problems relating to carbonate diagenesis. An additional reason for evaluating reef diagenesis is the reservoir potential of these carbonate bodies. To illustrate the point, in the recent collection of 35 case studies of carbonate reservoirs (Roehl and Choquette 1985), reefs were involved in 15. The emphasis on porosity development in many studies of the present volume is therefore not of mere academic interest.

There has been an explosion in our knowledge of the crystal chemistry and structures of natural zeolites (Chapters 1 and 2), due in part to the now-common Rietveld method that allows treatment of powder diffraction data. Studies on the geochemistry of natural zeolites have also greatly increased, partly as a result of the interests related to the disposal of radioactive wastes, and Chapters 3, 4, 5, 13, and 14 detail the latest results in this important area. Until the latter part of the 20th century, zeolites were often looked upon as a geological curiosity, but they are now known to be widespread throughout the world in sedimentary and igneous deposits and in soils (Chapters 6-12). The application of natural zeolites has greatly expanded since the first zeolite volume. Chapter 15 details the use of natural zeolites for removal of ammonium ions, heavy metals, radioactive cations, and organic molecules from natural waters, wastewaters, and soils. Milankovitch cycles mark time intervals of tens of thousands to several millions of years. Such cycles are the result of variations in the Earth's position in relation to the Sun and these in turn determine the climatic variations. The Milankovitch theory was resurrected in the 1960's when evidence from Pleistocene deep sea sediments linked orbital variations and climate.This monograph discusses sedimentary cycles and their use in measuring geologic time. There is considerable effort made to clarify the term "sedimentary cycle", in particular, the two opposing concepts of cyclic stratification and event stratification. The recognition of sedimentary cycles and of Milankovitch cycles specifically, is considered and care is taken with the question of relating sediment thickness to time. Several examples from the Carboniferous to the Cretaceous are given to show how cyclostratigraphy can be applied to current geological problems. This volume should be of interest to geologists involved with stratigraphical analysis and basin analysis.
