Book A Postcolonial Ulysses in the Lusophone World

Download or read book A Postcolonial Ulysses in the Lusophone World written by Lisandra Silva e Sousa and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2020-02-26 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "'Portuguese Ulyssism' (Gilberto Freyre's concept referring to Luís Vaz de Camões's epic and the Portuguese maritime voyage in the Renaissance) is an axial cultural construct, which this work partially absorbs but also departs from, to assert mutating literary experiences referring to the Camonean version of the myth in the epic Os Lusíadas/The Lusiads. Vaz de Camões's epic describes Vasco da Gama's voyage to India and his encounters with numerous obstacles and hardships in the New World, thus relocating Homer's The Illiad and The Odyssey, and, in particular, Virgil's The Aeneid. In it, the myth of Ulysses combines with the subject of Portuguese colonial dispersal throughout the world in the Renaissance to form the focus of Camões's epic, whose characters are split into two archetypes: Ulysses - nationals with diasporic identities - and the Old Man of Restelo, who represents the arguments of the settled identities of the nation against the ambitions of a Portuguese global diaspora. This research revisits the Camonean dialogue with Homer and Virgil in the context of the Portuguese colonial dispersal in the Renaissance to suggest a postcolonial Ulysses in the Lusophone world"--

Download or read book Religions in Rio written by João do Rio and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: João do Rio (1881-1921) was a literary journalist before his time, before the term existed, before anyone saw that journalism could be raised to the level of art by infusing it with intellecual insight and sociological analysis. He went wherever necessary to observe life as Rio de Janeiro struggled to enter the 20th century while clinging to its traditional imperial politics and lifestyle. He flaunted his homosexuality a century before it became socially acceptable. Here, for the first time in English, are João do Rio's reports on the bizarre confluence of European, North American, and African religions that found adherents in Rio de Janeiro. Candomblé, Spiritism, Positivism, Satanism, Judaism, the Cult of the Sea, the New Jerusalem, the Physiolaters, the Priestesses, the Evangelicals...they all fell under his scrutiny. Ana Lessa-Schmidt's translation of As Religiões no Rio, brilliant and true to the original, brings João do Rio's insight and revelations to full light. Just as João do Rio took readers down the dark streets of the low-life and into dark houses of worship, Lessa-Schmidt's translation takes readers into one of the world's most glorious and mysterious cities during its post-imperial heyday at the turn of the 20th century. This bilingual edition is in Portuguese and English.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was thirteen. Being thirteen is like being in the middle of nowhere. Which was accentuated by the fact that I was in the middle of nowhere. In a house that wasn't mine. In a city that wasn't mine, in a country that wasn't mine, with a one-man family that, in spite of the intersections and intentions (all very good), wasn't mine. When her mother dies, thirteen-year-old Vanja is left with no family and no sense of who she is, where she belongs, and what she should do. Determined to find her biological father in order to fill the void that has so suddenly appeared in her life, Vanja decides to leave Rio de Janeiro to live in Colorado with her stepfather, a former guerrilla notorious for his violent past. From there she goes in search of her biological father, tracing her mother's footsteps and gradually discovering the truth about herself. Rendered in lyrical and passionate prose, Crow Blue is a literary road trip through Brazil and America, and through dark decades of familial and political history.
