Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High Speed Madness, with Love at the Wheel Love. The most overloaded word in our language. Love of your mate, love of pets, of parents and children and friends, all different things. We spend our last breath sharing our love. For love, we break not just the law but ourselves. Love is pure devotion, and pure corrosion. Love propels these stories. Thrillers and fantasies, science fiction and historicals. Love chained by brain implants and little old ladies who should have been left undisturbed. Love strong enough to unravel the universe, with the knowledge to do it. Minuscule love wiggling its whiskers against your cheek. Trapped children freeing themselves through love of the incomprehensible. Love of art and family and another person, the kind of love that violates museums and gnaws Semtex. Selected from a decade of the author’s work, these eleven tales affirm the power of love—at knifepoint. “Each story is Hieronymus Bosch writing a love letter to Charlie Brown’s little red-haired girl now grown and so weary she aches.” – ZZ Claybourne

Book Rust

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jonathan Waldman
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2015-03-10
  • ISBN : 1451691610
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Rust written by Jonathan Waldman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize ** A Wall Street Journal Best Book of the Year Rust has been called “the great destroyer,” the “pervasive menace,” and “the evil.” “This look at corrosion—its causes, its consequences, and especially the people devoted to combating it—is wide-ranging and consistently engrossing” (The New York Times). It is the hidden enemy, the one that challenges the very basis of civilization. This entropic menace destroys cars, fells bridges, sinks ships, sparks house fires, and nearly brought down the Statue of Liberty’s torch. It is rust—and this book, full of wit and insight, disasters and triumphs—is its story. “Jonathan Waldman’s first book is as obsessive as it is informative…he takes us deep into places and situations that are too often ignored or unknown” (The Washington Post). In Rust, Waldman travels from Key West to Prudhoe Bay, meeting people concerned with corrosion. He sneaks into an abandoned steelworks and nearly gets kicked out of Can School. He follows a high-tech robot through an arctic winter, hunting for rust in the Alaska pipeline. In Texas, he finds a corrosion engineer named Rusty, and in Colorado, he learns of the animosity between the galvanizing industry and the paint army. Along the way, Waldman recounts stories of flying pigs, Trekkies, rust boogers, and unlikely superheroes. The result is a man-versus-nature tale that’s as fascinating as it is grand, illuminating a hidden phenomenon that shapes the modern world. Rust affects everything from the design of our currency to the composition of our tap water, and it will determine the legacy we leave on this planet. This exploration of corrosion, and the incredible lengths we go to fight it, is “engrossing…brilliant…Waldman’s gift for narrative nonfiction shines in every chapter….Watching things rust: who would have thought it could be so exciting” (Natural History).

Book Titanic Corrosion

    Book Details:
  • Author : Susai Rajendran
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2019-11-28
  • ISBN : 100075684X
  • Pages : 234 pages

Download or read book Titanic Corrosion written by Susai Rajendran and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word “titanic” reminds one of the majestic ship Titanic and James Cameron’s epic romance movie Titanic—in many cases the film first and the ship next. The Titanic was the world’s largest passenger ship when it entered service, measuring 269 m (882 feet) in length, and the largest man-made moving object on earth. The colossal ship and the epic movie inspired the authors, Susai Rajendran (professor of chemistry) and Gurmeet Singh (a renowned academic administrator and an internationally reputed expert in the field of corrosion science and smart materials) to study why the Titanic collapsed. The main reason seems to be bimetallic corrosion, also known as galvanic corrosion. This book discusses various aspects of galvanic corrosion, namely causes, consequences, methods of control, and case studies. It also reports research on the causes of corrosion of the sunken ship, including microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) and metallurgical failure. The book is a great reference for research scholars in the field of corrosion, graduate- and postgraduate-level students, the general public, and marine engineers.

Book DAILY DEVOTIONAL

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas Marshall
  • Publisher : Christian Publishing House
  • Release : 2015-11-24
  • ISBN : 0692588019
  • Pages : 254 pages

Download or read book DAILY DEVOTIONAL written by Thomas Marshall and published by Christian Publishing House. This book was released on 2015-11-24 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans must breathe in the air of our atmosphere to survive. Many cities because of pollution face a dangerous level of contamination in their air. However, an even more deadly air affects both Christians and nonChristians. Ordinary methods or devices cannot detect this poisonous air. The apostle Paul, in his letter to the Ephesians, spoke of the "air," when he said that Satan was "the ruler of the authority of the air." (Eph. 2:2) In that, very same verse Paul said the "air" is "the spirit now working in the sons of disobedience." If we breathe in this “air,” we will begin to adopt their attitude, thoughts, speech and conduct. 'We know that we are from God, but the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.' (1 John 5:19) Satan controls "the spirit," i.e., worldview, of every human alienated from God, by infecting their beliefs about life. This is why Paul in the same letter exhorted us to be 'renewed in the spirit of our mind.' (Eph. 4:23) Therefore, Christians are to avoid taking in Satanic "air," being influenced by its values, beliefs, thinking, speech and conduct, we must be renewing our mind day by day, discerning what is the will of God. (Rom. 12:2) Paul counseled, "Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth." (Col. 3:2) It is, for this reason, Marshall has penned the DAILY DEVOTIONAL: Daily Musings From the Old Testament, which can help us be protected against Satan's efforts at controlling our mind and heart. For each day of the year, DAILY DEVOTIONAL provides a Daily Bible Reading and comments for consideration.
