Book Changed Forever Volume I

Download or read book Changed Forever Volume I written by Arnold Krupat and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changed Forever is the first study to gather a range of texts produced by Native Americans who, voluntarily or through compulsion, attended government-run boarding schools in the last decades of the nineteenth and the first decades of the twentieth centuries. Arnold Krupat examines Hopi, Navajo, and Apache boarding-school narratives that detail these students' experiences. The book's analyses are attentive to the topics (topoi) and places (loci) of the boarding schools. Some of these topics are: (re-)Naming students, imposing on them the regimentation of Clock Time, compulsory religious instruction and practice, and corporal punishment, among others. These topics occur in a variety of places, like the Dormitory, the Dining Room, the Chapel, and the Classroom. Krupat's close readings of these narratives provide cultural and historical context as well as critical commentary. In her study of the Chilocco Indian School, K. Tsianina Lomawaima asked poignantly, "What has become of the thousands of Indian voices who spoke the breath of boarding-school life?" Changed Forever lets us hear some of them.

  • Author : Aline Dobbie
  • Publisher : Melrose Press
  • Release : 2004
  • ISBN : 0954848020
  • Pages : 255 pages

Download or read book India written by Aline Dobbie and published by Melrose Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From her infancy the author has been fascinated by that most magnificent and elusive of beasts, the tiger. Her second book on India, [this] is a personal account of her pilgramage to India's great wildlife parks and tiger sanctuaries ... and provides a comprehensive study of Ranthambhore, Bandhavgarh, Kanha and Corbett Tiger Reserves as well as detailed backgrounds to Nagarahole, Kaziranga, Pench, Bharatpur and Gir National Park, home of the rare Asiatic Lion ... In addition, the author highlights the continuing threat to India's tigers and the on-going efforts to protect them ... Dobbie is a Hindi speaker and uses her many contacts and childhood reminiscences to great effect throughout this book. The reader will also find valuable information on some of India's historical gems such as Gwalior, Orchha, Sonagiri, Mandu, Sanchi and Bhimbetka as well as the hill station of Nainital. India: The Tiger's Roar is certainly not a travel guide, nor a guide to the wildlife of India, although it is an excellent source of information on both subjects. Instead it is a heady blend of travelogue and personal insight, cultural and political philosophy, anecdotes, cautionary tales, historical and religious references and a thesis on the state of Indian wildlife conservation.

Book Mandarins and Heretics

Download or read book Mandarins and Heretics written by Junqing Wu and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-01-23 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Mandarins and Heretics, Wu Junqing explores the denunciation and persecution of lay religious groups in late imperial (14th to 20th century) China. These groups varied greatly in their organisation and teaching, yet in official state records they are routinely portrayed as belonging to the same esoteric tradition, stigmatised under generic labels such as “White Lotus” and “evil teaching”, and accused of black magic, sedition and messianic agitation. Wu Junqing convincingly demonstrates that this “heresy construct” was not a reflection of historical reality but a product of the Chinese historiographical tradition, with its uncritical reliance on official sources. The imperial heresy construct remains influential in modern China, where it contributes to shaping policy towards unlicensed religious groups.

Book Interaction Ritual Chains

Download or read book Interaction Ritual Chains written by Randall Collins and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex, smoking, and social stratification are three very different social phenomena. And yet, argues sociologist Randall Collins, they and much else in our social lives are driven by a common force: interaction rituals. Interaction Ritual Chains is a major work of sociological theory that attempts to develop a "radical microsociology." It proposes that successful rituals create symbols of group membership and pump up individuals with emotional energy, while failed rituals drain emotional energy. Each person flows from situation to situation, drawn to those interactions where their cultural capital gives them the best emotional energy payoff. Thinking, too, can be explained by the internalization of conversations within the flow of situations; individual selves are thoroughly and continually social, constructed from the outside in. The first half of Interaction Ritual Chains is based on the classic analyses of Durkheim, Mead, and Goffman and draws on micro-sociological research on conversation, bodily rhythms, emotions, and intellectual creativity. The second half discusses how such activities as sex, smoking, and social stratification are shaped by interaction ritual chains. For example, the book addresses the emotional and symbolic nature of sexual exchanges of all sorts--from hand-holding to masturbation to sexual relationships with prostitutes--while describing the interaction rituals they involve. This book will appeal not only to psychologists, sociologists, and anthropologists, but to those in fields as diverse as human sexuality, religious studies, and literary theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout Nanjing’s history, writers have claimed that its spectacular landscape of mountains and rivers imbued the city with “royal qi,” making it a place of great political significance. City of Virtues examines the ways a series of visionaries, drawing on past glories of the city, projected their ideologies onto Nanjing as they constructed buildings, performed rituals, and reworked the literary heritage of the city. More than an urban history of Nanjing from the late 18th century until 1911 — encompassing the Opium War, the Taiping occupation of the city, the rebuilding of the city by Zeng Guofan, and attempts to establish it as the capital of the Republic of China — this study shows how utopian visions of the cosmos shaped Nanjing’s path through the turbulent 19th century.

Book Art and Ritual in the Black Diaspora

Download or read book Art and Ritual in the Black Diaspora written by Paul Griffith and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-12-14 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archetypes of Transition in Diaspora Art and Ritual examines residually oral conventions that shape the black diaspora imaginary in the Caribbean and America. Colonial humanist violations and inverse issues of black cultural and psychological affirmation are indexed in terms of a visionary gestalt according to which inner and outer realities unify creatively in natural and metaphysical orders. Paul Griffith’s central focus is hermeneutical, examining the way in which religious and secular symbols inherent in rite and word as in vodun, limbo, the spirituals, puttin’ on ole massa, and dramatic and narrative structures, for example, are made basic to the liberating post-colonial struggle. This evident interpenetration of political and religious visions looks back to death-rebirth traditions through which African groups made sense of the intervention of evil into social order. Herein, moreover, the explanatory, epistemic, and therapeutic structures of art and ritual share correspondences with the mythic archetypes that Carl Jung posits as a psychological inheritance of human beings universally.
