Book excerpt: A killer targets New York’s gay community in this “well-plotted” police procedural in the Edgar-winning series (Publishers Weekly). Neil Hockaday’s on furlough from the NYPD as he attempts to cut back on the booze, but his new wife, Ruby, is going back to her advertising job after the couple’s trip to Ireland. Unfortunately, the same day she returns to the office, her much-disliked ex-boss’s body is found, killed in grisly fashion and wearing a leather mask. Meanwhile, some of Hock’s colleagues on the force appear less than interested in solving a string of murders in which gay men are the victims. Now the detective’s working on his own time, in cooperation with a private investigator he knows, to uncover the truth in a case that will take him everywhere from the Metropolitan Opera to the nightclubs of Manhattan. “[A] beautifully written series.” —The Washington Post

Book excerpt: Common sense tells you that you would know if you were evil, but what about the freaking anti-christ? Quite ironically, my name is Faith, and up until a few days ago I was just a normal waitress working a dead end job just to get by. My life was going perfectly crappy just like everyone else, and my dumb ass had to go and screw it up looking for love. When a mysterious dating app installs itself onto my phone I cave and take the bait. Little do I know the four blind dates I'm matched with are actually the four horsemen of the apocalypse, and my life is turned upside down like the crosses they wear around their necks. I barely have enough time to process that angels and demons exist because every angel and their momma is descending from a corrupt heaven to kill me. Backed into a corner I'm left with two choices- try to plead my innocence to God and his army, or become the anti-christ they all think I am and build my own. Are good and evil really as black and white as they're tying to make them out to be?

Download or read book The American Police Novel written by Leroy Lad Panek and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-09-17 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American police novel emerged soon after World War II and by the end of the century it was one of the most important forms of American crime fiction. The vogue for either Holmesian genius or the plucky amateur detective dominated mystery fiction until mid-century; the police hero offered a way to make the traditional mystery story contemporary. The police novel reflects sociology and history, and addresses issues tied to the police force, such as corruption, management, and brutality. Since the police novel reflects current events, the changing natures of crime, court procedures, and legislation have an impact on its plots and messages. An examination of the police novel covers both the evolution of a genre of fiction and American culture in general. This work traces the emergence of the police officer as hero and the police novel as a significant popular genre, from the cameo appearances of police in detective novels of the 1930s and 1940s through the serial killer and forensic novels of the 1990s. It follows the ways in which professional writers and police officers turned writers view the police individually and collectively. The work chronicles the ways in which changes in the law and society have affected the actions of the police and shows how the protagonists of police novels have changed in gender, race, nationality, sexual orientation, and age over the years. The major writers examined begin with Julian Hawthorne in the nineteenth century, and include such writers as S.S. van Dine, Ellery Queen, Erle Stanley Gardner, Ed McBain, Chester Himes, MacKinley Kantor, Hillary Waugh, Dorothy Uhnak, Joseph Wambaugh, Bob Leuci, W.E.B. Griffin, and Carol O'Connor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The great poems, plays, novels, stories teach us how to go on living. . . . Your own mistakes, accidents, failures at otherness beat you down. Rise up at dawn and read something that matters as soon as you can.” So Harold Bloom, the most famous literary critic of his generation, exhorts readers of his last book: one that praises the sustaining power of poetry. "Passionate. . . . Perhaps Bloom’s most personal work, this is a fitting last testament to one of America’s leading twentieth-century literary minds."—Publishers Weekly “An extraordinary testimony to a long life spent in the company of poetry and an affecting last declaration of [Bloom's] passionate and deeply unfashionable faith in the capacity of the imagination to make the world feel habitable”—Seamus Perry, Literary Review "Reading, this stirring collection testifies, ‘helps in staying alive.’“—Kirkus Reviews, starred review This dazzling celebration of the power of poetry to sublimate death—completed weeks before Harold Bloom died—shows how literature renews life amid what Milton called “a universe of death.” Bloom reads as a way of taking arms against the sea of life’s troubles, taking readers on a grand tour of the poetic voices that have haunted him through a lifetime of reading. “High literature,” he writes, “is a saving lie against time, loss of individuality, premature death.” In passages of breathtaking intimacy, we see him awake late at night, reciting lines from Dante, Shakespeare, Milton, Montaigne, Blake, Wordsworth, Hart Crane, Jay Wright, and many others. He feels himself “edged by nothingness,” uncomprehending, but still sustained by reading. Generous and clear‑eyed, this is among Harold Bloom’s most ambitious and most moving books.
