Book excerpt: "Focuses attention on a fundamental legal problem: The lack of citizen awareness of the workings of our justice system. Clearly, an educated public is less likely to get into legal tangles and more likely to know how to solve problems, yet many Americans lack a basic understanding of law and government and how to gain access to them. Too often the law is looked upon as a threat rather than a safeguard, and the lawyer's work is seen as an object of distrust rather than respect. For too long public school students have learned to recite the Bill of Rights without learning to understand its content. According to a Constitutional Rights Foundation survey of American 17-year-olds, only 22 percent believed that unpopular opinions about race and religion should be allowed on radio and television. Although 77 percent could cite one or more ways to influence Government action, only 54 percent thought it would do any good. The implications of these statistics reach far beyond the Nation's classrooms, for the ignorance of a few affects the rights of all of us. If more Americans respected our laws and regarded our institutions of government as vibrant and responsive, it would be reasonable to hope for a decrease in the crime rate and an increase in political activism"--Page 1.

Book Teaching Teachers about Law in the 90s

Download or read book Teaching Teachers about Law in the 90s written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document is a compendium of teacher education strategies intended to strengthen law related education efforts by providing ideas, activities, and experiences drawn from the perspectives of veteran teacher educators. The book grew out of a conference on advanced law related education leadership exploring what is known about preparing precollegiate teachers for the 1990's and beyond. This comprehensive volume includes diverse inservice teacher education programs, ranging from creative strategies for workshops of short duration to summer institutes of several weeks. Preservice models for infusing law relate education into college and university teacher preparation courses are highlighted. In addition to presentations of exemplary preservice and inservice teacher education programs, an important element of the conference was reflective discussions among teacher education faculty, school district staff development specialists, and law related education program directors. The volume is divided into two parts. The first includes six articles on preservice models. Articles in this section discuss training future teachers in U.S. government and politics, integrating law related education into social studies using language arts methods, and a model for using law related education as a vehicle for teaching secondary social studies method courses. The second section on inservice models discusses statewide law related education certification, national teacher training workshops, graduate level programs, summer institutes for teachers, and community/school partnerships such as a mock trial program in Ohio, and the national MENTOR program of law firm/high school partnerships.
