Book excerpt: Infectious diseases are the leading cause of death globally, particularly among children and young adults. The spread of new pathogens and the threat of antimicrobial resistance pose particular challenges in combating these diseases. Major Infectious Diseases identifies feasible, cost-effective packages of interventions and strategies across delivery platforms to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS, other sexually transmitted infections, tuberculosis, malaria, adult febrile illness, viral hepatitis, and neglected tropical diseases. The volume emphasizes the need to effectively address emerging antimicrobial resistance, strengthen health systems, and increase access to care. The attainable goals are to reduce incidence, develop innovative approaches, and optimize existing tools in resource-constrained settings.

Book Nanostructures for Antimicrobial Therapy

Download or read book Nanostructures for Antimicrobial Therapy written by Anton Ficai and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-05-29 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanostructures for Antimicrobial Therapy discusses the pros and cons of the use of nanostructured materials in the prevention and eradication of infections, highlighting the efficient microbicidal effect of nanoparticles against antibiotic-resistant pathogens and biofilms. Conventional antibiotics are becoming ineffective towards microorganisms due to their widespread and often inappropriate use. As a result, the development of antibiotic resistance in microorganisms is increasingly being reported. New approaches are needed to confront the rising issues related to infectious diseases. The merging of biomaterials, such as chitosan, carrageenan, gelatin, poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) with nanotechnology provides a promising platform for antimicrobial therapy as it provides a controlled way to target cells and induce the desired response without the adverse effects common to many traditional treatments. Nanoparticles represent one of the most promising therapeutic treatments to the problem caused by infectious micro-organisms resistant to traditional therapies. This volume discusses this promise in detail, and also discusses what challenges the greater use of nanoparticles might pose to medical professionals. The unique physiochemical properties of nanoparticles, combined with their growth inhibitory capacity against microbes has led to the upsurge in the research on nanoparticles as antimicrobials. The importance of bactericidal nanobiomaterials study will likely increase as development of resistant strains of bacteria against most potent antibiotics continues. Shows how nanoantibiotics can be used to more effectively treat disease Discusses the advantages and issues of a variety of different nanoantibiotics, enabling medics to select which best meets their needs Provides a cogent summary of recent developments in this field, allowing readers to quickly familiarize themselves with this topic area

Book Improving Knowledge and Attitudes Toward Antibiotics for Viral Upper Respiratory Infections

Download or read book Improving Knowledge and Attitudes Toward Antibiotics for Viral Upper Respiratory Infections written by Louise G. Murray and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the out-patient setting, over 130 million courses of antibiotics are prescribed each year. Estimates are that over half of these are unnecessary, as these antibiotics are given to treat viral infections. Consequences of the misuse and overuse of antibiotics are increased adverse effects, increased healthcare costs, and the development of antibiotic-resistant organisms. One of the driving forces behind the inappropriate prescribing of antibiotics is consumer demand. Patient expectation for antimicrobials is fueled by misconceptions about viral upper respiratory infections (URIs) and correct treatments. Research shows that providing a point-of-care educational intervention about viral URIs and the ineffectiveness of antibiotics as a course of treatment may increase knowledge and decrease patient desire for antimicrobials. In a university student health center, it was noted that a significant number of patients presenting with viral URI symptoms expected antibiotic treatment. In an attempt to improve patient knowledge about viral URIs and appropriate treatment of these infections, relevant evidence-based literature was reviewed and an evidence-based practice project was designed to educate students seeking treatment for viral URIs. The educational module consisted of a point-of-care educational video and a take-away educational pamphlet. Changes in knowledge and attitudes were measured in a pre-test/post-test format. The aggregate post-intervention test scores of knowledge demonstrated a significant 67.5% increase (p =

Book Philosophies and Theories for Advanced Nursing Practice

Download or read book Philosophies and Theories for Advanced Nursing Practice written by Janie B. Butts and published by Jones & Bartlett Publishers. This book was released on 2013-12-26 with total page 675 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophies and Theories for Advanced Nursing Practice, Second Edition was developed as an essential resource for advance practice students in master’s and doctoral programs. This text is appropriate for students needing an introductory understanding of philosophy and how a theory is constructed as well as students and nurses who understand theory at an advanced level. The Second Edition discusses the AACN DNP essentials which is critical for DNP students as well as PhD students who need a better understanding of the DNP-educated nurse’s role. Philosophies and Theories for Advanced Nursing Practice, Second Edition covers a wide variety of theories in addition to nursing theories. Coverage of non-nursing related theory is beneficial to nurses because of the growing national emphasis on collaborative, interdisciplinary patient care. The text includes diagrams, tables, and discussion questions to help students understand and reinforce core content.

Book Mechanisms of antibiotic resistance

Download or read book Mechanisms of antibiotic resistance written by Jun Lin and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antibiotics represent one of the most successful forms of therapy in medicine. But the efficiency of antibiotics is compromised by the growing number of antibiotic-resistant pathogens. Antibiotic resistance, which is implicated in elevated morbidity and mortality rates as well as in the increased treatment costs, is considered to be one of the major global public health threats (www.who.int/drugresistance/en/) and the magnitude of the problem recently prompted a number of international and national bodies to take actions to protect the public (http://ec.europa.eu/dgs/health_consumer/docs/road-map-amr_en.pdf: http://www.who.int/drugresistance/amr_global_action_plan/en/; http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/docs/carb_national_strategy.pdf). Understanding the mechanisms by which bacteria successfully defend themselves against the antibiotic assault represent the main theme of this eBook published as a Research Topic in Frontiers in Microbiology, section of Antimicrobials, Resistance, and Chemotherapy. The articles in the eBook update the reader on various aspects and mechanisms of antibiotic resistance. A better understanding of these mechanisms should facilitate the development of means to potentiate the efficacy and increase the lifespan of antibiotics while minimizing the emergence of antibiotic resistance among pathogens.
